Toast (2010) is a British TV film directed by S.J. Clarkson, and based on cookery writer Nigel Slater's autobiographical novel of the same name.
Freddie Highmore plays a 15-year-old Slater, with Helena Bonham Carter as his stepmother and Ken Stott as his father. The first showing was on BBC One on 30 December 2010 and the film received a gala at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.
The film was released in cinemas on 11 August 2011.
Nigel Slater is keen on cooking while his mother (Victoria Hamilton) is a poor cook with chronic asthma. As her illness worsens, so does Nigel's relationship with his father (Ken Stott). After Nigel's mother dies, his father begins to spend his evenings with newly divorced cleaner Mrs. Potter (Helena Bonham Carter), whose signature lemon meringue pie is a hit with Mr. Slater; Nigel would later try to extract the recipe from her. The two embark on a relationship, and soon move to a remote part of the Herefordshire countryside with Nigel, who dislikes his father's new partner.
All around the country and coast to coast
People always say what do you like most?
I don't wanna brag I don't wanna boast
I always tell 'em I like toast
Yeah toast!
Yeah toast!
I get up in the morning 'bout six A. M.
Have a little jelly have a little jam
Take a piece of bread put it in the slot
Push down the lever and the wires get hot
I get toast
Yeah toast!
Yeah toast!
Now there's no secret to toasting perfection
There's a dial on the side then you make your selection
Push to the dark or the light and then
If it pops too soon press down again
Make toast
Yeah toast!
Yeah toast!
When the first caveman drove in from the dregs
Didn't know what would go with the bacon and the eggs
Must've been a genius got it in his head
Plug the toaster in the wall buy a bag of bread make toast
Yeah toast!
Uh toast?
Oui monsieur bonjour croquette
Uh huh croissant et vous et ver
Maurice Chevalier Eiffel Tower
Oui Marie baguette bonsoir
