Based on the heart-wrenching, bittersweet story of British cook and writer Nigel Slater's childhood, adapted from his best selling memoir, Toast is a delicious love letter to the tastes and smells that a young boy associates with his journey into adulthood.

Toast is the ultimate nostalgia trip through everything edible in 1960s Britain.
Set in 1967 Wolverhampton, nine year old Nigel Slater loves his mother though she is a hopeless cook, her finest offering being toast whilst he has great culinary aspirations.
When she dies of asthma Nigel is left with a distant father but worse is to come when the 'common' Mrs Joan Potter arrives as the Slaters' cleaner. Nigel fears, rightly, that her aim is to be the next Mrs Slater.
Joan is, however, a superb cook but this only makes for rivalry as Nigel, the only boy in his cookery class at secondary school, competes with her to find the way to his father's heart.
A weekend job in a pub kitchen introduces Nigel to an older boy, a great cook and also gay like Nigel, who gives him the confidence and inspiration to leave home after his father's death and head for the hotel kitchens of London to begin his culinary career.

Toast ist alles, was Nigels Mutter in der Küche zustande bringt. Alle anderen Kochversuche enden mit verbrannten Konservendosen, misslungenen Kuchen und matschigem Gemüse. Da hilft es auch nichts, dass Nigel heimlich Kochbücher unter der Bettdecke studiert. Als Nigels Mutter stirbt, steht der Junge mit seinem Vater plötzlich alleine da.
Bis Mrs. Potter erscheint, die neue Putzfrau. Und eine außergewöhnlich gute Köchin. Zu Nigels Entsetzen wickelt Mrs. Potter seinen Vater mit ihren Kreationen, allen voran mit ihrer Zitronen-Baiser-Torte, um den Finger. Doch auch Nigel lernt kochen. Kochen wird bald die entscheidende Waffe im Kampf um die Gunst des Vaters, aber ausgerechnet er bleibt bei dieser Schlacht auf der Strecke.

"Toast" erzählt die Geschichte von Nigel Slaters Kindheit und Jugend im England der 60er- und 70er-Jahre. Nigel Slater ist in seiner Heimat ein gefeierter Kochbuchautor und TV-Koch, der mit Jamie Oliver auf eine Stufe gestellt wird. "Nigel is a bloody genius", sagt Jamie Oliver.
Basierend auf der Autobiografie von Slater (in Deutschland unter dem Titel "Halbe Portion. Wie ich lernte, die Küche zu lieben") schufen der "Billy Elliot"-Drehbuchautor Lee Hall und die Regisseurin S.J. Clarkson ein bezauberndes Stück Kinomagie, das an Jean-Pierre Jeunets "Die fabelhafte Welt der Amèlie" erinnert. Unterstützt werden sie dabei von Freddie Highmore ("Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik") als Nigel Slater und der großartigen Helena Bonham Carter ("The King's Speech") als Mrs Potter.

Toast (2010) is a British TV film directed by S.J. Clarkson, and based on cookery writer Nigel Slater's autobiographical novel of the same name.
Freddie Highmore plays a 15-year-old Slater, with Helena Bonham Carter as his stepmother and Ken Stott as his father. The first showing was on BBC One on 30 December 2010 and the film received a gala at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival.
The film was released in cinemas on 11 August 2011.
Nigel Slater is keen on cooking while his mother (Victoria Hamilton) is a poor cook with chronic asthma. As her illness worsens, so does Nigel's relationship with his father (Ken Stott). After Nigel's mother dies, his father begins to spend his evenings with newly divorced cleaner Mrs. Potter (Helena Bonham Carter), whose signature lemon meringue pie is a hit with Mr. Slater; Nigel would later try to extract the recipe from her. The two embark on a relationship, and soon move to a remote part of the Herefordshire countryside with Nigel, who dislikes his father's new partner.

Here is short video of my brunch! I was really down this day so I'm sorry if I don't look so happy lol I was having a real discouraging morning! You can tell how unorganized this is ... I actually did finish my food but i edited it out because I started to talk about random things that completely did NOT make any sense... even editing didn't save it lol
I still feel like I am having trouble talking in front of the camera.. I dont know what to say that is acceptable and I start to stutter and mumble alot.. any suggestions!?!?!it would be really helpful to me~
