Hollywood Greatest Best Blockbuster Movie Films - George Orwell 1984 Full Movie
1984 is a 1956 film loosely based on the novel of the same name by George Orwell. This is the first cinema rendition of the story, directed by Michael Anderson, and starring Edmond O'Brien. Also starring are Donald Pleasence, Jan Sterling, and Michael Redgrave. Pleasence also appeared in the 1954 television version of the film, playing the character of Syme, which in the film was amalgamated with that of Parsons. O'Brien, the antagonist, was renamed "O'Connor," possibly to avoid confusion with lead actor Edmond O'Brien.
After the customary distributor agreement expired, the film was withdrawn from the theatrical and TV distribution channels by Orwell's estate and was not legally obtainable for many years

Orwell's work continues to influence popular and political culture, and the term Orwellian — descriptive of totalitarian or authoritarian social practices — has entered the language together with several of his neologisms, including Cold War, Big Brother, thought police, Room 101, doublethink, and thoughtcrime.

The classic, 1956 film version of Orwell's, 1984. Colorized and tinted to enhance the dark expressionism. Wikipedia says this was the least favored version of the film, but those who saw it when they were young can never forget it. For me the others are pale or soft, by comparison. This version was criticized for political reasons that frankly make no sense. Orwell was a once-socialist that like many people became disenchanted with the co called Communist movement.
I have not verified this but it is said there was an alternate ending that changes the ending in the book. The version here, is true to the book in the important places and was the version shown on TV.
In the later fifties and early 60's it was shown on the Million Dollar Movie in NYC for a week at a time on WOR Channel 9 and blew minds. It blew my mind. I had read the book when I was 10 and seeing the movie was a revelation.
Totalitarianism is depicted in it's worst, most personal horror. The other versions do not capture the intensity of the book. Edmund O'Brien as Winston, gives a tour de force performance.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
1984 is the second film version of George Orwell's cautionary novel. Though the events described by Orwell did not come to pass in the real 1984, the film's producers maintained a level of verisimilitude by shooting the scenes on the exact dates described in the novel. Otherwise, it's the same basic story: Winston Smith (John Hurt), a bureaucratic flunky living in the totalitarian state of Oceania, breaks the law by daring to fall in love with Ministry of Truth worker Julia (Suzanna Hamilton). Attempting to escape, Winston and Julia are tracked down by the Thought Police. Both must be "re-educated" into loving the State -- and by extension, the shadowy dictator Big Brother.

Nineteen Eighty-Four (film)
Nineteen Eighty-Four, also known as 1984, is a 1984 British dystopian drama film written for the screen and directed by Michael Radford, based upon George Orwell's novel of the same name. Starring John Hurt, Richard Burton, Suzanna Hamilton, and Cyril Cusack, the film follows the life of Winston Smith in Oceania, a country run by a totalitarian government.
The film, which features Burton's last screen appearance, is dedicated to him "With love and admiration."
Plot
In a dystopian 1984, Winston Smith (John Hurt) endures a squalid existence in the totalitarian superstate of Oceania under the constant surveillance of the Thought Police. The story takes place in London, the capital city of the territory of Airstrip One (formerly "either England or Britain").
Winston works in a small office cubicle at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history in accordance with the dictates of the Party and its supreme figurehead, Big Brother. A man haunted by painful memories and restless desires, Winston is an everyman who keeps a secret diary of his private thoughts, thus creating evidence of his thoughtcrime.

The classic, 1956 film version of Orwell's, 1984. Colorized and tinted to enhance the dark expressionism. Wikipedia says this was the least favored version of the film, but those who saw it when they were young can never forget it. For me the others are pale or soft, by comparison. This version was criticized for political reasons that frankly make no sense. Orwell was a once-socialist that like many people became disenchanted with the co called Communist movement. I have not verified this but it is said there was an alternate ending that changes the ending in the book. The version here, is true to the book in the important places and was the version shown on TV. In the later fifties and early 60's it was shown on the Million Dollar Movie in NYC for a week at a time on WOR Cha... -

Wikipedia says this was the least favored version of the film, but those who saw it when they were young can never forget it. For me the others are pale or soft, by comparison. In the later fifties and early 60's it was shown on the Million Dollar Movie in NYC for a week at a time on WOR Channel 9 and blew minds. It blew my mind. I had read the book when I was 10 and seeing the movie was a revelation.
Totalitarianism is depicted in it's worst, most personal horror. The other versions do not capture the intensity of the book. Edmund O'Brien as Winston, gives a tour de force performance.
