The Irwell film displays the fantastic energy, partnerships and catchment scale restoration that have been delivered in the Irwell catchment over the last 30 years.
Going from one of the most polluted and neglected river's in Europe to a hub for both people and wildlife. The restoration of the river Irwell has been instrumental in bringing about a regeneration of the city, as can be seen down at Salford Quays. People are re-engaging with a river that was the city's life blood back in the 19th century and provided a valuable resource for industry and world trade.
There is still much to do to but the river is definitely on the right path to recovery after years of neglect.

It's not often something of incredible historical importance is pulled out of the Irwell.
Taking the Bridgewater Canal around Eccles as a reference point, you'd expect shopping trolleys, and the odd traffic cone.
But at the end of Bridgewater Road in Irwell Riverside, twenty or so two-ton pieces of a stone sign marking a cotton mill have been re-discovered.
Whilst the Environment Agency were working on cleaning up the river and restoring flood defences, they spotted the huge stones, many of which had obscure lettering carved into them, two feet high.
It took a little bit of detective work by Hessel de Boer and Kevin O'Neill from the local M3 Magazine, and a little push from local Councillor Steve Coen, and another local resident Steven Ord, and the stones could be traced to the nearby Greengate Mill.
Greengate Mill was built by Edward Riley Langworthy, the first councillor (called 'alderman' in those days) of the Trinity area. He was the second MP for Salford and also the fifth mayor of the city in the 1850s, and a very active member of the community.
His generosity extended to paying for the first public library and museum in the UK in 1850 - Peel Park Library, now Salford Museum and Art Gallery. "So," as Steve Coen says, "he was a local businessman who, while his mill was providing jobs in the area, put money back into the community to help educate the working class."
SalfordOnline will be following this fascinating story when the stones are re-positioned on the banks of the Irwell on 16 March 2011.

Tragic last moments of a lost dog in the River Irwell - Need help tracing owner
As this video starts i had chased the dog 3 or 4 hundred metres downstream trying to get ahead of it through the fast currents. I tried coercing it towards me as i ran down and managed to get him about half way across, but almost out of the main current. I started videoing with the mindset that i had saved it and this would be the heroic moment i would pull it out of the water but it was tired and confused, the last of the current pulled it away from me and it tried to paddle downstream as it was easier for it to swim with the current than against it. I couldn't follow it any further in the water as it got to deep so i climbed the bank and sprinted downstream through the hogweed and knotweed to a section i know i can wade out safely. It wasn't far but it felt like a mile. Catching glimpses...

I have looked across facebook and animal sites for reports of a missing dog, but with no luck. I presume it was deliberately dumped but if anyone has any information on anyone with a missing dog, particularly one with a full harness then please email me at irwellfishing@gmail.com

Coronation Street, ITV's perennial soap opera, celebrated its 25th anniversary in December 1985. Granada TV launched Albion Market on 30th August of that year, six months after the BBC's EastEnders. Albion Market was a "continuing drama series" - Granada TV had always refused to use the term "soap opera", considering it derogatory - that was set in a covered market in Salford, a city with a direct border across the River Irwell with Manchester, in the northwest of England. At launch the chairman of Granada claimed that "When Coronation Street celebrates its Golden anniversary, Albion Market will be celebrating its silver anniversary..."
However, the show lasted for only one year and the last episode, featured here, was transmitted on Sunday 30th August 1986.
The show ran twice weekly on Friday and Sunday night; at the time, 7.00pm on Fridays and Sundays were considered "graveyard slots", usually broadcasting American imports or British game shows such as Play Your Cards Right. The critics disliked it, and the viewing public were simply indifferent, despite an attempt to re-launch it by bringing in veteran television actor Antony Booth and 1960s singer Helen Shapiro.
For many years the outdoor set, complete with its distinctive arch-shaped Albion Market sign, perched regally over the River Irwell, could be spotted from Bridge Street in Salford. When the Granada Tours Experience was closed in 1999, the sign was removed, and the building which was once Albion Market now forms part of the Victoria and Albert Hotel.
Transferred from an original "off-broadcast" VHS recorded within the Yorkshire Television region.
