Gerry Moffatt from The Himalayan Outdoor Centre speaking at Careers In The Outdoors 2012. Gerry Moffatt talks about his career in adventure travel and film. Gerry Moffatt first arrived in Nepal on a British kayaking expedition in 1983 at the age of eighteen. Over the next twenty years he became the first man to descend all the major rivers in the Nepalese Himalayas. In 1990 he established the first river company in Northern Pakistan. Currently he serves as the white water consultant to the Kingdom of Bhutan. National Geographic regard him as "the most experienced river guide in the Himalayas." Throughout his career, Gerry has spent a considerable amount of time working in the field of adventure documentary production. He has summated Mt. Everest on two occasions for film productions.

Moffat (Scottish Gaelic: Am Magh Fada, "The Long Plain") is a former burgh and spa town in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, lying on the River Annan, with a population of around 2,500. It was a centre of the wool trade and a spa town.
The Moffat House Hotel, located at the northern end of the High Street, was designed by John Adam. The nearby Star Hotel, a mere 20 ft (6 m) wide, boasted a record in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest hotel in the world. Moffat won the Britain in Bloom contest in 1996.
Moffat is the home to Moffat toffee.
The town is held to be the ancestral seat of Clan Moffat. The Devil's Beef Tub near Moffat was used by the members of Clan Moffat and later the members of Clan Johnstone to hoard cattle stolen in predatory raids.
Early tourism as a spa town
From 1633 Moffat began to grow from a small village into a popular spa town. The sulphurous and saline waters of Moffat Spa were believed to have healing properties, specifically curative for skin conditions, gout, rheumatism and stomach complaints. In 1730 these were complemented by the addition of iron springs. During the Victorian era the high demand led to the water being piped down from the well to a tank in Tank Wood and then on to a specially built bath house in the town centre (now the Town Hall).

Ivan Moffat
Ivan Romilly Moffat (18 February 1918 – 4 July 2002) was a British screenwriter, film producer and socialite who, with Fred Guiol, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for adapting Edna Ferber's eponymous novel into the film Giant (1956). Moffat was the grandson of actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree.
After studying at the London School of Economics, Moffat became a socialite and began to make films to promote the war effort. During World War II, he filmed activities of the US Army, meeting director George Stevens, whom he soon followed to Hollywood and assisted at Paramount Pictures. In the 1950s, between his two marriages, Moffat had a string of love affairs, notably with Elizabeth Taylor and Lady Caroline Blackwood. Beginning in 1956, he wrote or co-wrote screenplays for a number of well-known films, in addition to Giant, and in the 1970s wrote for television.
Early life
Ivan Moffat was born in Havana, Cuba, the son of the British actress and poet Iris Tree and her American husband, artist and photographer Curtis Moffat. He was the grandson of actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. The family lived, among other places, in America and Australia, and moved to London when Moffat was 8 years old. There, Moffat attended Dartington Hall School, in Totnes, Devon, befriending Michael Young. Moffat then studied at the London School of Economics. As an undergraduate, he joined the Communist Party, which caused him later to be blacklisted for a time in Hollywood. Jessica Mitford once described Moffat as "spanning the gap between Left-wing politics and the deb dance scene".

Throughout his career, Gerry has spent a considerable amount of time working in the field of adventure documentary production. He has summated Mt. Everest on two occasions for film productions.

Moffat Needed Help and we thank God we found him in time: Elderly people with cognitive deficits and depression are very vulnerable to Jiggers. And complications can lead even to death. Moffat had no hope and no care. He had no friend. And though he appeared to be about 60, he was confused and said he was 'four'. Sadly, he was laughed at the the children standing around. We find it is common for the jigger victims to be confused, especially about age. We understand there can be many reasons, but certainly the torture and pain that they live with having jiggers eating at them would make matters worse. MEDICAL CONDITION: The condition depicted is known as "Tungiasis". It is an infestation of the skin by a burrowing flea called Tunga penetrans (aka: Chigoe Flea). A victim is commonly referred to as having "Jiggers." These fleas tend to infest those who have inadequate living conditions and sanitation. The flea lives both outside around warm-blooded mammals and inside poorly constructed homes. It inhabits dust on floors, cracks in walls and bedding. Shoes protect to some degree but are often not affordable or adequate. More needs to be done to ensure a jigger-free environment, including extermination and sanitation measures, improvements in home construction and making clean bedding more commonplace. Jiggers are vicious and real!
The parasites burrow into the skin and then swell up with eggs; the larvae hatch and the cycle continues. Jiggers cause untold suffering in the afflicted, interfering with sleep, and causing itching, pain and the inability to walk. The parasite can afflict all parts of the body. Victims are often socially stigmatized, left isolated and without family or communal support.
METHODOLOGY: Rise Up Society uses the method of physical extraction under the direction of highly qualified, local physicians with hands-on knowledge in this field. We have refined our method over a 3-year period in which approximately 150,000 victims of Jigger infestation have been helped. We have incorporated new and improved equipment, medicines and practices over the course of time as information became available and funding allowed. While physical extraction is not new, it is efficient and our preferred method until research reveals better treatments. Treatment options for Jiggers vary, and our method may not reflect the practices of other groups in other parts of Kenya or in the surrounding countries that are also inflicted with the jigger menace.

Moffat Needed Help and we thank God we found him in time: Elderly people with cognitive deficits and depression are very vulnerable to Jiggers. And complications can lead even to death. Moffat had no hope and no care. He had no friend. And though he appeared to be about 60, he was confused and said he was 'four'. Sadly, he was laughed at the the children standing around. We find it is common for the jigger victims to be confused, especially about age. We understand there can be many reasons, but certainly the torture and pain that they live with having jiggers eating at them would make matters worse. A type of fish which dates back to the Ice Age has been found to be flourishing after being introduced to a south of Scotland loch. Numbers of vendace, Britain's rarest freshwater fish, in Loch Skeen near Moffat are said to be "significant". The fish were introduced to the loch in the 1990s using stock from Cumbria ...
