A nationwide general strike against French labour reforms is due to be held in Paris on Tuesday, June 14.
Air traffic controllers, the General Confederation of Labor coalition (CGT) and the Nuit Debout movement will participate in the strike.
Commonly referred to as the 'El Khomri law' after French Labour Minister Myriam El Khomri, the reforms will look at almost all aspects of France's labour laws; maximum working hours, holidays and breaks, among other areas will be open to negotiation as the government attempts to liberalise France's labour market.
French President Francois Hollande is said to be attempting to lower the country's unemployment rate below 10 percent.

After full employment during the 1914-1918 War, the 1920s brought a return to high unemployment. It didn't suit those with capital to employ workers so the feeling of betrayal along with hunger and misery prevailed. Protest marches were organised and people started to vote for Union-backed candidates for Government. In 1924 the first Labour Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, came to power but the compromises he made to work within the capitalist economy prevented any socialist progress. The Government collapsed in 1925 and the Conservatives came back into power and ordered a reduction in wages along with a threat to issue weapons to selected anti-strike civilians.

Tear gas and Molotov cocktails have been deployed during a demonstration in Syntagma Square, Athens, where a general strike is taking place. Around 50,000 Greeks marched on parliament in Central Athens on Thursday. Groups of youths then broke away from the crowd and began hurling stones and petrol bombs at police. Officers responded with rounds of teargas and stun grenades, witnesses told Reuters.

The Legendary Kings of Canadian Punk Rock, D.O.A were at the forefront of the hardcore movement of the early eighties. Formed in 1978 they made their first big impression with the release of the classic 'Disco Sucks' EP in June the same year and before they knew it they were ripping' up stages across the globe. Never ones to shy away from controversy D.O.A. said what they meant and garnered a name for being proud of their political stance. They genuinely believed that music could make a difference however small and went on the play an impressive number of benefit gigs for causes as diverse as Rape-Relief to anti-globalisation. Their impact on subsequent generations is undeniable with The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Rancid, Green Day and The Offspring all citing them as a big influence. Nearly thirty years on and D.O.A. flatly refuse to give up, appearing at major punk festivals the world over.
This film features a rare footage of an event at the Bierkeller in Leeds, England 17/02/1984, which was organised by celebrated British promoter and writer Nick Toczek. The evening includes a stellar guest list including poets Seething Wells, Mensi and Spartacus R. D.O.A. play a blistering set including favourites from their career to date. For those in the audience it was an unforgettable night of hardcore fun from the days when it wasn't considered un-cool to wear your political heart on your sleeve. For those who missed the boat this is a great opportunity to reassess a generation too often looked upon with contempt

General strike
A general strike (or mass strike) is a strike action in which a substantial proportion of the total labour force in a city, region, or country participates. General strikes are characterized by the participation of workers in a multitude of workplaces, and tend to involve entire communities. General strikes first occurred in the mid-19th century, and have characterized many historically important strikes.
History
Antiquity
An early predecessor of the general strike may have been the secessio plebis in ancient Rome. In the Outline Of History, H.G. Wells recorded "the general strike of the plebeians; the plebeians seem to have invented the strike, which now makes its first appearance in history." Their first strike occurred because they "saw with indignation their friends, who had often served the state bravely in the legions, thrown into chains and reduced to slavery at the demand of patrician creditors."
Wells noted that "[t]he patricians made a mean use of their political advantages to grow rich through the national conquests at the expense not only of the defeated enemy, but of the poorer plebeian..." The plebeians, who were expected to obey the laws, but were not allowed to know the laws (which patricians were able to recite from memory), were successful, winning the right to appeal any injustice to the general assembly. In 450 BC., in a concession resulting from the rebellion of the plebeians, the laws of Rome were written for all to peruse.

Protest marches were organised and people started to vote for Union-backed candidates for Government. In 1924 the first Labour Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald, came to power but the compromises he made to work within the capitalist economy prevented any socialist progress. The Government collapsed in 1925 and the Conservatives came back into power and ordered a reduction in wages along with a threat to issue weapons to selected anti-strike civilians.
