A great army of manpower, composed of soldiers, prisoners and local people, built the wall. The construction result demonstrates the wisdom of the Chinese people. But during its construction, the Great Wall was called "the longest cemetery on earth" because so many people died building it. Reportedly, it cost the lives of more than one million people The Great Wall was also listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. With a history of more than 2000 years, some of the sections are now in ruins or have disappeared. However, it is still one of the most appealing attractions all around the world owing to its architecture and historical significance. In May 1932, Ripley's Believe It or Not! Claimed that the wall is the only man made structure that can be visible to the human eye from the moon. But later research said this is not true. Now that China is a powerful country and has a strong military army, the great wall is now a tourist attraction and boosts commerce for China. But even though it is just a tourist attraction, it is still important to preserve it because it is very ancient and was built by ancestors who the Chinese respect. Plus, it took a long period of time and labour to make the Wall and it represents the history of China. In fact, on September 20 of 2006, the State Council promulgated the regulation on the protection of the Great Wall. It states that when tourists visit the wall, they must observe his or her obligations to protect it. Tourists may preserve the Great Wall of China by simply remembering to take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints and kill nothing but time.
