Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge (Cladium mariscus), rushes, or heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof. It is a very old roofing method and has been used in both tropical and temperate climates. Thatch is still employed by builders in developing countries, usually with low-cost, local vegetation. By contrast in some developed countries it is now the choice of affluent people who desire a rustic look for their home, would like a more ecologically friendly roof, or who have purchased an originally thatched abode.
Thatching methods have traditionally been passed down from generation to generation, and numerous descriptions of the materials and methods used in Europe over the past three centuries survive in archives and early publications.
In some equatorial countries, thatch is the prevalent local material for roofs, and often walls. There are diverse building techniques from the ancient Hawaiian hale shelter made from the local ti leaves (Cordyline fruticosa), lauhala (Pandanus tectorius) or pili grass (Heteropogon contortus).

While discovering the importance of thatch in the UK throughout history, three trainees are taught the fundamentals of the craft - from learning how to bend the hazel spars that keep the thatch on the roof, to packing and blending the straw correctly to ensure that the roof remains waterproof, before being put to the ultimate test - laying a piece of thatch on an 800-year-old property.

Under Monty Don's watchful eye, three hopefuls who are passionate about learning to thatch are put through their paces by the country's leading practitioners. To the untrained eye, thatch is just straw spread out on a roof, but there is a reason why it takes apprentices four years to master the necessary skills. As the apprentices quickly find out, not only is it immensely tough physical labour, a fully waterproof thatched roof is also a highly complex and subtle thing to pull off.

As part of a restoration project, the thatch on this 17th century cottage is reinstated (it was removed in 1967). This is the first stage - removing the existing concrete tiles, fireproofing to building control approval, counter batoning and lathing.
(lyrics by Harry Conklin)
Your time has come the full moon's in the air
Hear the cry of the jackal in the hills
Scent of smoke fills your nostrils
as the wind blows back your hair
Paint the canvas black if you will
Watch out there's a man who wants your soul
It won't be long till he finds you
Don't look back at the shadow on the wall
With hands outstretched to grab you
So don't let the reaper catch you sitting still. NO!
Feel the touch on your shoulder as you turn your head around
Take heed, my friend, of the reaper's blade
Oh, come, you happy hearted, let your empty minds be filled
Don't let your hallowed soul be betrayed
Fix your eyes on the crowd, don't let your stare astray
See them practice magic in the air
As they cry their incantations, oh, their damned insinuations
Mix the sea with the blood moon, but beware
Blood moon sitting high up in the sky
Oh, you're the spotlight that can kill
Blood moon bleeding on the world tonight
It will take your heart and change your will
