Supernova impostors are stellar explosions that appear at first to be a type of supernova but do not destroy their progenitor stars. As such, they should be considered to be a class of extra-powerful novae. They are also known as Type V supernovae, Eta Carinae analogs, and giant eruptions of luminous blue variables LBV.
Supernova impostors appear as remarkably faint supernovae of spectral type IIn, those which have hydrogen in their spectrum and narrow spectral lines indicating relatively low gas speeds. These impostors exceed their pre-outburst states by several magnitudes, with typical peak absolute visual magnitudes of −11 to −14, making these outbursts as bright as the most luminous stars. The trigger mechanism of these outbursts remains unexplained, though it is thought to be caused by violating the classical Eddington luminosity limit, initiating severe mass loss. If the ratio of radiated energy to kinetic energy is near unity, as in Eta Carinae, then we might expect an ejected mass of about 0.16 solar masses.
PHASE 2 (aka Lonny Wood) is one of the most influential and well known New York City aerosol artists. Mostly active in the 1970s, Phase 2 is generally credited with originating the "bubble letter" style of aerosol writing, also known as "softies". He was also influential in the early hip-hop scene.
Phase 2 is from The Bronx, and attended DeWitt Clinton High School along with a number of other early graffiti artists. Many famous graffiti writers of the early 1970s would meet at a doughnut shop across from the school called the Coffee Shop before heading down to the subway station at 149th Street and Grand Concourse to watch tagged trains on the IRT line pass by. Phase 2 was mentored in graffiti by his friend and neighbor Thomas Lee aka Lee 163d!, one of the pioneers of graf writing in The Bronx.
He began writing in late 1971 under the name Phase 2, a moniker which had a rather mundane provenance. As Phase 2 would later recall, "the previous year we'd given this party. We were getting ready to give another one and I said, 'We'll call this one Phase Two.' I don't know why, but I was stuck on the name. It had meaning for me. I started writing 'Phase 2.'"
FM Radio Gods is a live electronica act from Montreal, Canada composed of two artists: Andrew Hamilton (formerly Lucid) and Tao-Nhan Nguyen (DJ Tao).
Winners of the 2008 Roland Synthesizer contest. Collaborations and remix by the Presslaboys, Tobias Luzenkirchen, Ticon and Bomb the Bass.
Releases can be found on Baroque Records, Tribal Vision, Attitude Recordings, Iboga, Plastik Park and more.
Since their debut in 2006, FM Radio Gods has become known as true heavyweight producers - always ready to deliver a powerfully-dynamic live act. Incorporating everything from minimal house to glitchy electro, the Montreal duo has come a long way and is not showing any signs of letting up.
2007 saw the first wave of releases on such labels as Iboga and Blue Tunes. It did not take long for original tracks like "Freeflow" to climb past the top 50 on Beatport's progressive house network. This same year, FM brought Attitude Recordings into existence acting as the labels directional driving force.
2008 gave way to a frenzy of releases on labels such as Tribal Vision and Plastik Park, including a slew of collaborations with artists in the likes of Motion, Beauty and the Beat, Antix and True Lies. The year came to a close with a 1st prize victory in the national Roland synthesizer contest - the result of a collaboration between FM Radio Gods and Ali Emad (aka eFem).
