We are meeting weekly with the council to try to improve their offer and promote our claim. Under our collective bargaining agreement we represent ALL council staff on pay and terms and conditions issues. This short UNISON video has been made in response to the Surrey County Council Pay and Reward consultation. All of the UNISON reps here are SCC employees. We are all volunteers and we are all affected by these proposals. SCC says their proposals are sustainable, fair and will help with recruitment and retention. We wish this were so as we want to improve recruitment and retention but we disagree fundamentally and do not believe these proposals are fair OR sustainable. Although filmed solely at County Hall due to time pressures, we are representing all staff across the whole county. Any final offer will go to members. UNISON are conducting a detailed survey now and we will ballot members on any final offer in June. Only union members will have a vote in that ballot. Members working in schools are not affected yet by these proposals and are being balloted separately on a straightforward offer of a 1% cost of living and 1% incremental rise. The council is hoping to introduce a similar Pay & Reward package next year in schools. Issues Sickness absence – red line for UNISON. We will not sign away the right to 6 months full pay and 6 months half pay. Car mileage lump sum – the cost of driving has increased. If the council says we have to use our car for work then they need to make a fair contribution to the running costs. UNISON fought for this important allowance and we will fight to keep it. Parking charges – lots of staff have been able to park their car at work without charge for many years. We will fight any attempt to start charging these staff to park their cars. Relocation grant – penalises those forced to move location. Need to ensure that staff who are forced to move are compensated fairly for extra travel and parking costs. The current 3-year grant (towards costs over 2 miles each way) is fair. Reducing to 1-year and only for costs over 10 miles each way is grossly unfair. Flexible ‘Martini’ contracts - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere Living Wage – We want a £10ph minimum wage in Surrey. Their pledge to meet the government’s minimum wage target of £9ph by 2020 is just a pledge to obey the law. The council needs to aim higher than this. It costs far more to live in Surrey than in most parts of the country. Cumulative effect of T&Cs; changes offset any small increase some staff may receive this year. ONE TEAM?
