Eye-gouging is the act of pressing or tearing the eye using the fingers or instruments. Eye-gouging involves a very high risk of eye injury, such as eye loss or blindness.

Eye-gouging is prohibited in sports. It is a serious offence in rugby football codes where it occurs rarely. It is prohibited in combat sports, but some self-defense systems teach it.^{[citation needed]} Training in eye-gouging can involve extensive grappling training to establish control, the eye-gouging itself being practiced with the opponent wearing eye protection such as swimming goggles.^{[citation needed]} Yuki Nakai went on to win a bout in the Vale Tudo Japan 1995 tournament after his opponent performed an illegal gouge that blinded him in that eye.^[1]

Julien Dupuy born 19 December 1983 is a rugby union player for Stade Français in the Top 14.

Julien Dupuy played for Biarritz and Toulouse in the French Top 14 for 7 seasons before joining Leicester Tigers in 2008.^[1]It was confirmed in April 2009 that he would remain at Leicester for the 2009-10 Guinness Premiership season,^[2]but in June 2009, Leicester coach Richard Cockerill resigned himself to losing Dupuy to Stade Français. He was only halfway through a two-year deal but has reportedly been unsettled at Leicester because his French girlfriend was homesick.^[3]After the end of the season, he left Leicester for Stade Français, where his 2009-10 Top 14 season was ended early by a 24-week ban for contact with the eye or eye area of Stephen Ferris during Stade's loss to Ulster in the 2009-10 Heineken Cup.^[4]The ban was reduced to 23 weeks on appeal.^[5]

Dupuy made his France debut on 13 June 2009 in the first Test against New Zealand at Carisbrook, Dunedin, a game that France won by 27 points to 22.^[6][7]

Stephen Ferris (born 2 August 1985) is an Irish rugby union player for Ulster and Ireland. Ferris plays his club rugby with Dungannon. He is from Maghaberry and attended Friends School Lisburn. He has played for Ulster and Ireland in all three backrow positions.

Ferris graduated from the Ulster Academy and joined Ulster Rugby on a development contract at the start of the 2005–2006 season. He was named in the Ireland Under-20 Rugby World Cup Squad in 2005. He made his Ulster debut against Border Reivers in October 2005.

Ferris made his full Ireland debut against Pacific Islanders in November 2006. Ferris was selected for the Ireland Rugby World Cup squad in 2007 but was an unused reserve at the tournament. He earned his fifth Irish cap against Australia in June 2008.

Ferris is one of four Ulster Rugby players included in Ireland's PWC high performance select group.

He is currently signed with Ulster Rugby, keeping him at Ravenhill until the end of the 2010/11 season.^[1]

He was a member of the victorious Ireland team that won the 2009 Six Nations Championship and Grand Slam ^[2]

Ferris was selected as part of the 2009 British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa.^[3]

He scored his first Lions try on 3 June, against the Golden Lions but was forced to withdraw from the squad on Tuesday 9 June after he tore the medial collateral ligament in his right knee during a training session. He was replaced by Wales captain Ryan Jones .^[4]

He played for Ireland during the 2009 November Tests, in which Ireland defeated South Africa 15-10. Ferris played in four of Ireland's 2010 Six Nations matches, but missed the 2010 Summer Tour through injury. However, he made his international comeback during the 2010 November Tests, scoring his first international try against New Zealand at the new Landsdowne Road, and scoring his second against Argentina. He missed the 2011 Six Nations, and the latter half of the 2010/2011 season through injury, but returned for Ireland against France on 20 August during a 2011 Rugby World Cup warm-up test, having been included in Ireland's training squad for the world cup.

Gareth Hock (born 5 September 1983) is an English rugby league player who currently plays for English club Wigan Warriors in the Super League competition. His primary position is as a second-row forward.

Early Years[link]

Wigan born Gareth Charnock, changed his name to Gareth Hock after his parents married when he was 9. Under his new name, Gareth went on to make a big impact in the rugby league world. Wigan signed Gareth, along with future first teamers Luke Robinson and Sean O'Loughlin, at the age of 12.

Playing career[link]

He worked his way up through Wigan's scholarship and Academy systems, playing in the Academy U19s during the 2002 season. However, injury forced him to miss much of the latter part of the year. Despite this, he was included in the 2003 first team squad by head coach Stuart Raper. Gareth made his first team debut that season against Doncaster in the Challenge Cup, scoring two tries after coming on to replace an injured Sean O'Loughlin. He went on to become a first team regular for the rest of the season. Gareth commented later: “Sean O'Loughlin was injured early, which was a lucky break for me,” he said. “It went well, then Faz (Andrew Farrell) got injured and I got a few starts. I’ve enjoyed every minute.”

He crowned a magnificent season by being named Super League Young Player of the Year. Gareth signed a new one-year contract with Wigan in June 2004.

Gareth has international experience playing in the Great Britain Academy side that toured Australia in 2001. He was also called up to the England Academy squad to face the Aussie Schoolboys in December 2002. He played in the first Test, scoring a vital try in England's historic victory. He had achieved amateur representative honours, touring with Great Britain U16s and U18s. He has now been included in the England A squad to face the Australians at Brentford on 28 October 2003.

Unfortunately Gareth's playing career took a turn for the worse when he picked up a medial ligament injury against the Bradford Bulls on 25 February 2005. The injury required a full knee reconstruction which kept him side-lined until the end of the 2005 Super League season. Gareth was expected to make his return in the 2006 season but suffered a stress fracture to his shin and had to miss the start of the 2006 season. He was set to make his return from injury on the 14 May 2006 but he required a further operation and is like to miss the entire 2006 Super League season. The 2004 young player of the year, who was tipped to be one of the best second rowers in England, has not played a first team rugby league match in over 2 years.

Gareth made his long awaited return to rugby league in Wigan Warriors' Rugby League Challenge Cup match against Salford which Wigan lost 16-4, despite being on the losing team Hock made an impressive return. He featured in the next match which was against local rivals St Helens, he was again impressive and scored a try but Wigan lost 14-28. His impressive return has meant that Hock is likely to be included in the Great Britain test squad to take on New Zealand only a month after returning from a 2 year injury.

In September 2008 he was named in the England training squad for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup,^[2] and in October 2008 he was named in the final 24-man England squad.^[3]

He has been named in the England team to face Wales at the Keepmoat Stadium prior to England's departure for the 2008 Rugby League World Cup.^[4]

On 10 May 2011, Gareth Hock signed a new contract with the Wigan Warriors until 2015, beginning once his 2 year doping ban has ended on 23 June.^[5]

Since his return from his ban, he has been a consistent member of the Wigan Warriors first team, gaining the number 12 shirt in the 2012 season (following the departure of Joel Tomkins to Saracens RUFC). Hock is well known for his aggressive and confrontational style of play and has begun to return to the high standard performances seen before his ban.

Controversy[link]

It was reported in June 2009 that Gareth tested positive for cocaine following tests on an 'A' sample of urine taken during a match between Wigan and Salford City Reds.^[6][7] A second 'B' sample also returned a positive result for benzoylecgonine, the main metabolite of cocaine.^[8] In August 2009, it was confirmed that Hock would face a two-year ban from rugby league as he did not appeal against the mandatory ban.^[9]

He made a high profile return against Huddersfield Giants in a 2011 Super League game.

Rougerie was born in Beaumont, Puy-de-Dôme. His father, Jacques Rougerie, was also a French international, playing at prop while his mother was an international at basketball.

He made his debut with the French national team against South Africa in 2001.

Rougerie sued Phil Greening of England for a hand off during a European game in 2002 that left him with a throat injury forcing him to undergo 3 larynx surgeries. Greening was been ordered to pay £29,000 in compensation.

It was initially alleged by a prominent New Zealand newspaper that Rougerie was responsible for eye gouging All Black captain Richie McCaw during France's 2011 Rugby World Cup Final defeat. Footage of the action was aired on the Re:Union show on Sky Network Television in New Zealand. Firstly he is shown head butting the prone Richie McCaw trapped in the ruck, then raking his fingers across McCaw's eyes. The period for match citing passed and Rougerie escaped suspension. An action of this type could have seen him banned from the game for up to 6 months.^[1]
