Kelby is a photographer, designer, and the award-winning author of more than 40 books, including Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks, The Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers, The Photoshop Channels Book, Photoshop Classic Effects, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Book for Digital Photographers, The iPod Book, The Digital Photography Book, and The iPhone Book.

Continuing on with our composition series - in this video we'll be discussing the Rule of Odds.
A quick note about "rules" - I don't particularly care for the term "rule" because of the implication that it must be adhered to for a composition to work. This is not true at all. Rather than rules - think of them as guidelines for creating interest in a composition. Use them when you need to create that interest - blow them off when you don't.
Having said that though - practice all of these rules as we go through them with your own camera and photography. Having them become second nature is essential to moving forward in your own abilities.
The Rule of Odds states that framing your subject with 2 surrounding objects (thus creating an odd number of 3) suggests balance and harmony visually. We tend to prefer balance and feel comfortable with these groupings of 3. Groups of 2 or 4 can sometimes create a sense of competition where as the odd groupings tend to balance that a bit. This is a very subjective rule, but it does create balance.
Remember though that odd numbers really just refer to the number 3. Objects of 5 or more create more density than the viewer will perceive and the effect is null at that point. Larger numbers of objects, however can be divided visually into groupings of 3, thus bringing more cohesion to the composition.

Vous le savez, je suis un adepte des jeux vidéos. Dernièrement, j'ai mis la main sur "The Witness", le nouveau jeu de Jonathan Blow, créateur de Braid que j'avais adoré. The Witness est juste MAGNIFIQUE (regardez l'épisode ^^). J'ai passé des dizaines d'heures sur cette île à résoudre des casses têtes et surtout à admirer ces paysages et ces mises en scène. Mon oeil de photographe s'y est beaucoup amusé. J'ai donc eu envie de vous parler de la composition photo via ce jeu vidéo ... car il est juste magnifique.

Rabindranath Tagore's Khorobayu Boy Bege with Abraham Mazumder's composition
In this arrangement Abraham Mazumder has adapted the lively interlude and prelude music from Handel's Messiah, Air no.40( Why do the nations rage). This was recorded in a live concert performed by Kolkata Music Academy Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Abraham Mazumder. Composition on noteflight
This is a small song I wrote while playing one day. I was practicing my songs and just sort of made this up. I liked how it sounded so I wrote it down. Then later, I learned about noteflight and decided to try to write the song out on the website. It was a bit difficult to use at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. This was my first time using the website, and I couldn't figure out how to make dynamics in the music, so I just didn't put in any dynamics. Overall, the website was easy to use and was free. (but has a premium version which does cost money) If you're interested in writing music, you should check it out and see how you like it for yourself. (P.S. this is not a sponsored video) -

So here it is! Grand Designs III Asylum at long last. After two years, I am extremely proud to present this to you. ASYLUM serves as an acronym for the 6 tracks: Arrival, Surrender, Yearning, Lost Inside, Unity (The Escape) and Memory. For those of you not familiar with the Grand Designs series this is a series of progressive rock songs all written and recorded by me. I would like to thank everyone who has been supporting this project and offering kind words of encouragement. This is a small song I wrote while playing one day. I was practicing my songs and just sort of made this up. I liked how it sounded so I wrote it down. Then later, I learned about noteflight and decided to try to write the song out on the website. It was a bit difficult to use at first, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. This was my first time using the website, and I couldn't figure out how to make dynamics in the music, so I just didn't put in any dynamics. Overall, the website was easy to use and was free. (but has a premium version which does cost money) If you're interested in writing music, you should check it out and see how you like it for yourself. (P.S. this is not a sponsored video)

Mastering composition to get more keepers is the best thing to do in street photography. If you shoot film, you'll save lots of it. If you shoot digital, you'll save the headache of choosing the best photo of 60 which are identical. In the video I'm using my Pivothead sunglasses to record the video, a Zoom H1 to record audio. The Leica R4 SLR camera, Summicron 50mm f/2, and Kodak Portra 160. Note: None of the photos are cropped, which explains the black frame around each image (from the film). Also, none of the pictures are manipulated with cloning out distractions. Just simple processing is done, that's it. Sorry it's shaky. I wanted to use YouTube stabilization, but it made it worse. It's said that most professionals get about one keeper per roll. That's a pretty horrible ratio if you... -

The seismographic registration of traumatic shock becomes, at the same time, the technical structural law of music. It forbids continuity and development. Musical language is polarized according to its extreme; towards gestures of shock resembling bodily convulsions on the one hand, and on the other towards a crystalline standstill of a human being whom anxiety causes to freeze in her tracks.... Modern music sees absolute oblivion as its goal. It is the surviving message of despair from the shipwrecked."

Mastering composition to get more keepers is the best thing to do in street photography. If you shoot film, you'll save lots of it. If you shoot digital, you'll save the headache of choosing the best photo of 60 which are identical.

Heck, you might think they all suck, but that doesn't matter to me. What matters is that I'm always learning, and always pushing myself to get better at street photography by applying composition techniques...not the rule of thirds!
Hopefully this video teaches you that when you learn composition, you can discipline yourself. Practice control and wait for the shot that will be worthy of your collection. Babe Ruth didn't swing at every ball...he waited for the perfect pitch to hit his homeruns. Working the scene is like using a machine gun at target practice. You hope to get a bullseye, but wouldn't you rather be a sniper and nail it?

In my lessons on http://drawabox.com, I usually cover drawing fundamentals - the individual mechanics and observational skills. This time I've decided to change it up a bit and explore a more interesting topic.
Composition is integral for a successful illustration, and there's a lot to it. I explain a handful of concepts related to it here, and I will explore a few other topics in my next video, which will be the process of the last four thumbnails of the set shown here.
Rather than serving as part of a lesson like some of my previous content, what I'm trying to do with this series of videos is explain the a possible workflow for creating an illustration. I'd like to take one of these thumbnails and show you all my process from start to finish. We'll see if I take it that far.
