Saheed Adebayo Akinfenwa (born 10 May 1982), known as Adebayo Akinfenwa and nicknamed "The Beast", is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for AFC Wimbledon. He is known for his physical strength and heavy build.
Akinfenwa's first professional breakthrough came at Doncaster Rovers, having spent time up until then in the lower leagues of English football as well as spells in Lithuania and Wales. Following a short but successful time at Doncaster, Akinfenwa moved to his seventh club, Torquay United. He proved to be a goal threat, but left the struggling team the following season to join Swansea City. After spending two seasons with the Welsh club, he joined League One side Millwall and later moved to Northampton Town, where his goal-scoring talent was recognised by higher league clubs such as Leyton Orient and Grimsby Town. Akinfenwa spent six years switching from Northampton to Gillingham, where his goal-scoring ability was still apparent. In June 2014, he signed for League Two side AFC Wimbledon on a 14-month contract.
AFC Wimbledon is a professional English association football club based in Kingston. The club plays in League Two of the Football League, which is the fourth tier in the English football league system. They play at Kingsmeadow, in Kingston upon Thames, a ground which is shared with Kingstonian.
The club was founded by Wimbledon F.C. supporters in June 2002 as a direct reaction to the decision by an independent three man commission appointed by the Football Association to allow Wimbledon F.C. to relocate to Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire, about 56 miles north of Wimbledon. The large majority of Wimbledon F.C. supporters very strongly opposed the idea of moving the club so far, feeling that a club transplanted to Milton Keynes would no longer represent Wimbledon F.C.'s legacy and traditions, and, having campaigned against the proposed move, viewed its official sanctioning as the "death of their club". AFC Wimbledon considers itself a spiritual successor or "phoenix" version of the original team. Wimbledon F.C. physically moved in 2003 and then changed the name the club to Milton Keynes Dons in 2004.
Sky Sports is a group of sports television channels operated by the satellite pay-TV company Sky plc. Sky Sports is the dominant subscription television sports brand in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It has played a major role in the increased commercialisation of British sport since 1991, sometimes playing a large role in inducing organisational changes in the sports it broadcasts, most notably when it encouraged the Premier League to break away from The Football League in 1992.
Sky Sports 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 are available as a premium package on top of the basic Sky package. These channels are also available as premium on nearly every satellite, cable and IPTV broadcasting system in the UK and Ireland. Sky Sports News HQ is provided as part of basic packages. Sky Sports is perhaps best known for its Premier League football coverage. The Sky Sports network is managed by Barney Francis.
At launch on 5 February 1989, Sky Television operated Eurosport as a 50/50 joint venture with the European Broadcasting Union. The channel was marketed as one of Sky's four channels upon its launch, although additional sports programmes such as long-running international cricket coverage was occasionally broadcast on Sky Channel.
