The City of Greater Bendigo has submitted an application for a planning permit for the major upgrade to the Bendigo Tennis Centre.
The upgrade includes a new pavilion with two function rooms, a new kitchen and kiosk, reception area, a pro shop, an administration area, accessible change rooms and toilets, a tournament office, external landscaping, extended car parking and public toilets.
It will also see four courts upgraded to International Tennis Federation standards.
The City has allocated $1M towards this project in its proposed 2016/2017 Budget. Bendigo Tennis Association and Tennis Australia have contributed $600,000 towards the project, and the State Government will fund $2.4M, with a total project cost of $4M.
Mayor Cr Rod Fyffe said works were expected to begin in October and would take approximately 12 months to complete.
“The existing Bendigo Tennis facilities have served the community well over many years but are in need of replacement,” Cr Fyffe said.
“Tennis is growing in popularity in Greater Bendigo, so it’s important that we provide facilities to accommodate that growth.”
Bendigo Tennis Association President Paul Henshall said this was an exciting step forward for the project.
“The new pavilion and courts have been designed in partnership with Tennis Australia and will help ensure Bendigo remains a destination for regional and national sporting events,” Mr Henshall said.
“If we want to be able to continue to host major tournaments in Bendigo, then we need to be able to provide high quality facilities.”
The City has also applied for $2.1M in Federal Government funding to install grandstand seating, upgrade and light seven courts, construct three junior courts and develop further BBQ and shelter facilities.
The Federal Labor Party has announced that it will commit funding to this part of the project, if it wins the federal election.
