In the final 18-hole playoff at a
U.S. Women's
Open,
Annika Sorenstam claimed the final major of her legendary career, defeating
Pat Hurst by four shots at
Newport (R.I.)
Country Club after the two were tied after 72 holes.
The Women's Open title was the third of Sorenstam's career, but her first since
1996, when she won the championship in back-to-back years. The playoff format has since transitioned to three-hole aggregate score. For more
