The town of Dara Adam Khel has became a locus of firearms manufacture in response to the British occupation of Pakistan and Afghanistan in the 19th century, and it has remained dedicated to that industry to the present day. While much of the firearms manufacturing there is done to a much higher standard than most people would expect, some shops are also quite happy to make cheap, poor-quality guns. It is those cheap examples that have become associated with the region for many people, and today we are looking at one such revolver.

Khyber Pass Colt Copy
The Khyber Pass is a region near the Afghan/Pakistan border known for firearms production - particularly for very crude guns made with crude tools. This particular pistol is an excellent example - it looks like a Colt 1911, although it is smaller and more akin to a .32ACP Llama. It is a straight blowback action, and mechanically is actually much more similar to a Spanish Ruby.

Khyber Pass Martini Pistol
The Khyber Pass is a well known center of arms production, with gunmaking there going back at least 100 years. The quality of craftsmanship varies greatly, from excellent and safe weapons to thoroughly unsafe guns made with little more than hand files and drills. In the last decade or so, much of the production has centered around making guns for sale to Western soldiers to take home as souvenirs. Since antique guns can generally be imported to places like the US and UK with minimal paperwork, gunsmiths build copies of the arms used by the British in their last occupation of Afghanistan - Martini Henrys. This particular one is a .303 caliber pistol, adorned extensively with decorations and with a laughably crude copy of British service markings.

Vietnamese Crude Blowback 1911 Copy
This is an example of a craft-made pistol captured in Vietnam and brought back to the US. While many Vietnamese fighters were supplied with good-quality weapons from other nations (primarily Chinese-made AK and SKS rifles), weapons are virtually never in sufficient supply for guerrilla-type forces and that forces improvisation. In this case, some Vietnamese hops tried to fabricate copies of American weapons - in this case a 1911 pistol.
This pistol was clearly made by someone who did not fully understand its mechanical elements. The safety, for example, is fixed solidly in place, and neither moves nor would function as a safety if it did move. Interestingly, under the left grip panel is an out-of-battery safety that was not used in the 1911 itself, but is common to other similar pistols -...

The Khyber Pass franken-machine pistol, with firearms and weaponry expert, Jonathan Ferguson
The Khyber region of Pakistan and Afghanistan is famed for its production of a variety of small arms ranging from the recognisable to the outright odd. This machine pistol was brought to the UK for analysis by the Pattern Room as it incorporates a number of interesting features that at first glance appear to be from famous weapons. Jonathan examines just where the inspiration for this hybrid machine pistol comes from.

Afghanistan or the Khyber Pass / Darra region of Pakistan would be 8mm Mauser, .303 British, or 7.62x54R - and none of these fit. It is entirely possible that the rifle is intended to be just a decoration. I would certainly not want to the the first person to try firing it...

The most significant functional concern with this pistol is that it has no locking system, and functions simply as a blowback pistol. This is seen in other insurgent-type arms as well, like the Spanish Civil War Izard. This would quickly batter itself to pieces if used, as the slide and spring are definitely too light to safely fire its .45ACP ammunition.

The small arms markets of Darra Adam Khel have made themselves known throughout the world for the immaculate ability of talented Pashtuns to handcraft a large number of small arms and produce almost identical copies of numerous Western designs for over a century. In this episode, we look at a few rifles that were produced in Darra, along with their original Martini-Henry or SMLE originals. In addition, we take a look at a local monstrosity that is an 8mm magazine fed, M1917 Enfield action married with a Kalashnikov outline of a receiver and actual folding AKMS buttstock.
This episode will be the first in a series of three total, looking specifically at these small arms from the gun markets of Darra from the long gun perspective, the Kalashnikov perspective, and a handgun perspective. as well.

The Khyber region of Pakistan and
Afghanistan is famed for its production of a variety of small arms ranging from the recognisable to the outright odd. This machine pistol was brought to the UK for analysis by the Pattern Room as it incorporates a number of interesting features that at first glance appear to be from famous weapons. Jonathan examines just where the inspiration for this hybrid machine pistol comes from.
