French Guiana (pronounced /ɡiːˈɑːnə/ or /ɡiːˈænə/, French: Guyane française; French pronunciation: [ɡɥijan fʁɑ̃sɛz]), officially called Guiana (French: Guyane), is an overseas department and region of France, located on the north Atlantic coast of South America in the Guyanas. It borders Brazil to the east and south, and Suriname to the west. Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of only 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 250,109 inhabitants in 2013 living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is the second largest region of France and the largest outermost region within the European Union.
The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. It was colonised by Frenchmen and other Europeans, who introduced African slaves and later Asian labourers and Hmong refugees from Laos.
The official language is French, while each ethnic community has its own language, of which French Guianese Creole is the most widely spoken.
Kourou is a commune in French Guiana, an overseas region and department of France located in South America. In addition to being an administrative district within French Guiana, it is also the main town within that district.
Within the Kourou district lies the Guiana Space Centre, France and the European Space Agency's main spaceport.
Some 60 km (37 mi) northwest of the French Guyanese capital Cayenne the Kourou River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. At the mouth of this river sits the town of Kourou, which is ringed by four hills: Carapa, Pariacabo, Café and Lombard, with the Singes and Condamine mountains not far behind. There are three lakes within the town's city limits: Lake Bois Diable (where one can take lessons in jetski and other aquatic sports), Lake Marie-Claire (the smallest and calmest), and Lake Bois Chaudat (the biggest of the three; also open to sport lovers, especially canoers and kayakers). Long white sand beaches and some rocky outcrops line the town's ocean coast, the riverbank and all points inland consisting mostly of mangrove and dense tropical rainforest.

The penal colony of Cayenne (French: Bagne de Cayenne), commonly known as Devil's Island (Île du Diable), was a famous prison of the 19th and 20th century. It operated at several locations in French Guiana. Opened in 1852, it was notorious for being used for internal exile of French political prisoners during that period, the most famous of which was Captain Alfred Dreyfus. It is also known for its harsh treatment of criminals, who were deported there from all parts of the French empire. The system was closed down in 1953.
The prison system stretched over several locations, on the mainland and in the off-shore Îles du Salut group. Île Royale was the reception centre for the general population of the penal colony; they were housed in moderate freedom due to the difficulty of escape from the island. Île Saint-Joseph was the Reclusion, where inmates were sent to be punished by solitary confinement in silence and darkness for escapes or offences committed in the penal colony. Île du Diable was for political prisoners. In the 19th century, the most famous such prisoner was Captain Alfred Dreyfus. In addition to the prisons on each of the three islands in the Salut island group, the French constructed three related prison facilities on the South American mainland, just across the straits at Kourou; 30 miles east in Cayenne, which later became the capital of French Guiana; and a hundred miles west at St. Laurent.
The Guianas, sometimes called by the Spanish loan-word Guayanas (Las Guayanas), are a region in north-eastern South America which includes the following three territories:
Some also consider the region to contain:
Before the arrival of European explorers, the Guianas were populated by scattered bands of Arawak Indians. The native tribes of the Northern Amazon are most closely related to the natives of the Caribbean; most evidence suggests that the Arawaks immigrated from the Orinoco and Essequibo River Basin in Venezuela and Guiana into the northern islands, and were then supplanted by more warlike tribes of Carib Indians, who departed from these same river valleys a few centuries later.

We reach our 200th country, Suriname as we visit the Guianas in South America. Our trip included stops at Cayenne, Paramaribo, Georgetown and Kaieteur Falls.
Nestled on the Northern side of South America's Eastern edge, the forgotten French Guiana stands the testament of time reminding us of the long forgotten French colonization of the 19th century. An infusion of French culture and history intermingle with South America's ancient indigenous populations. Flying high above the rich ecosystems of the Amazon rainforest, a symphony of sounds radiate vertically above the clouded canopy. Navigating through the dusty streets of the capital city of Cayenne, it's a city society with flavours and experiences unrivaled in its diversity. Their flag and tongue may be both French in form, but their people, are far from Parisian. French Roots in the heart of the Amazon jungle. This is French Guiana. Country number 9 of 10 on my Caribbean island hop by air. I fly into Guyana, on the northern coast of South America. Then disaster happens - I break my arm and end up visiting a local hospital. Stitched up and in a sling, I still manage to see some of the sights of Georgetown, Guyana's colourful capital city.

Arianespace has successfully launched the Sentinel-2B satellite for the European Commission within the scope of a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). The launch took place on Monday, March 6, at 10:49 p.m. local time from the Guiana Space Center (CSG), Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. With this latest successful launch, Arianespace once again demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development, while also carrying out its mission of guaranteeing European independent access to space.
Go to http://www.lamanchamedia.org for more info about this film and to see more. The Wild Coast is a physical, historical and philosophical exploration of the Guianas, the three countries that make up the northeast of South America. None of these three countries speak Spanish as an official language and one has English as the official language. They are quite unique and still very much wild and untamed. In our filming the main theme of the Guianas is freedom. As you will see in the film, freedom has both been trampled on and clinged-to at very great costs. The film explores what happened at Jonestown, where 900 people died during a mass suicide/murder led by cult leader Jim Jones in 1973. It explores the freedom-loving Maroon people of Suriname who were brought as slaves from Africa but...
