Donald Trump has run into a lot of walls trying to find a campaign song. Steven Tyler, R.E.M., and Adele have all asked the Republican presidential nominee to stop using their music. Back when Trump first announced his presidential bid last June to the tune of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” the folk icon also objected to Trump’s use of his music, declaring that he was supporting Bernie Sanders in the race. Young is still a Sanders supporter, but in terms of harboring any anger, the singer-songwriter is now singing a different tune.
In an interview with Reuters on Tuesday, Young clarified that he was fine with Trump using his music, stating that the candidate’s team had obtained a license to use the “Rockin’ in the Free World.” He also credited Trump with ending his campaign’s usage of the song after Young asked him to.
“He actually got a license to use it,” Young said. “I mean, he said he did and I believe him. So I got nothing against him. You know, once the music goes out, everybody can use it for anything… But if the artist who made it is saying you never spoke to them, if that means something to you, you probably will stop playing it. And it meant something to Donald and he stopped.”
