Larry Shinn talks about Berea College during the economic downturn
Larry Shinn, president of Berea College, delivers a special video message about the struggling economy and its effects on the college... and how you can help Berea continue its legacy of investing in lives of great promise.
Berea, the Souths first interracial and coeducational college, focuses on learning, labor, and service. Berea charges no tuition, admitting only academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources. All students must work 10 hours weekly, earning money for books, room and board. Graduates from Berea go on to distinguish themselves and the college in many fields, living out the college's motto "God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth."

Mule power provides timber for Berea's "deep green" residence hall
Berea College will begin construction on what will be the most energy-efficient residence hall in the commonwealth of Kentucky, if not the country, in April 2012. The 42,000 square foot building, referred to as the "Deep Green Residence Hall" will be constructed adjacent to Boone Tavern Hotel & Restaurant and will house 120 students in 66 rooms. Construction is expected to be completed by August 2013.
"This new residence hall will stand as the latest example of Berea's long-standing commitment to ecological sustainability or 'plain living' as it's stated in our Great Commitments," says Berea College President Larry Shinn. "We hope that this 'deep green' residence hall and the sustainable methods and materials used during construction will inspire others to reduce their carbon footprints and protect our natural resources."
The construction methods, sustainability features and use of local and recycled materials in construction of the residence hall fit within the college's strategic direction to meet the American College & University President's Climate Commitment goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from campus operations and promoting sustainability as a role model for students and the broader community.
The first new residential facility constructed at Berea College since the Ecovillage a decade ago, this $16.5 million Deep Green Residence Hall will be the third campus building to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The LEED Certification denotes independent verification from the U.S. Green Building Council that a building is designed and constructed "using strategies aimed at achieving high performance in key areas of human and environmental health." Berea's residence hall is expected to achieve LEED Platinum certification.
In determining a building's certification, LEED measures performance in several sustainability categories, including energy and atmosphere (energy consumption and monitoring and the use of renewable energy sources), water efficiency, materials and resources, innovation in design, and awareness and education.
"The deep-green features of the facility will blend the focus on students' needs to create a highly sustainable but comfortable residence for living and learning," says Steve Karcher, vice president for operations and sustainability. "Student involvement in the design process was critical in identifying opportunities for education about sustainability in a beautiful, student-centered structure."
To reduce the building's ecological footprint, the residence hall will feature solar photovoltaic and solar thermal systems that will provide about 14 percent of the building's energy needs; an ultra-efficient geothermal heat pump recirculation system; active daylighting; high-efficiency lighting; a highly insulated, state-of-the-art building envelope; triple-pane operable windows with solar shading; low-¬flow water fixtures and real-time monitoring of energy consumption. Composting toilets and gray or rain water recycling systems were designed and planned for the building, but current Kentucky building codes do not allow for their application in a residence hall.
Using timber harvested by mule teams in the Berea College Forest, the Berea College Student Crafts program is constructing 267 pieces of furniture for the residence hall. "We're building 120 desks, 120 three-drawer chests, and a number of specialty tables that are of particular interest for us because we're using the wood that came from the site where the residence hall is being built," says Tim Glotzbach, director of the Student Crafts program. Animal-powered timber harvesting is more ecologically friendly and less damaging to the ecosystem than highly mechanized methods. "It's very low-impact as far as soil disturbance," says Berea College Forester Clint Patterson. "There's just a little scuff mark along the forest floor where the log was dragged out and then some mule tracks."
The residence hall will provide a learning opportunity for students, staff, faculty and visitors. Faculty and students will provide input on the artistic elements of the building, which will include color and art schemes, as well as integration of historic and student art displays. During the construction phase and after it's occupied, the Deep Green Residence Hall will provide opportunities for interaction that will inform and educate residents and visitors about sustainable practices and features. Live monitoring of the building's energy footprint will provide immediate feedback on energy consumption.
The building has been designed in a unique, collaborative architectural partnership between Hastings & Chivetta (lead) and Hellmuth & Bicknese (sustainable features), both based in St. Louis, Mo. The building construction will be managed by the Lexington, Ky., office of Cincinnati-based Messer Construction Co.

Hare Krishna movement (Srila Prabhupada our Saviour)
Ispod engleskog je moj tekst na hrvatskom!
From Wikipedia:
Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1 September 1896 -- 14 November 1977) was a Gaudiya Vaishnava teacher and the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, commonly known as the "Hare Krishna Movement". His mission was to propagate Gaudiya Vaishnavism, a form of Hinduism that had been taught to him by his guru, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, throughout the world. Born Abhay Charan De in Kolkata he was educated at the prestigious local Scottish Church College. Before adopting the life of a pious renunciant (vanaprastha) in 1950, he was married with children and owned a small pharmaceutical business. In 1959 he took a vow of renunciation (sannyasa) and started writing commentaries on Vaishnava scriptures. In his later years, as a traveling Vaishnava monk, he became an influential communicator of Gaudiya Vaishnava theology to India and specifically to the West through his leadership of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), founded in 1966. As the founder of ISKCON, he "emerged as a major figure of the Western counterculture, initiating thousands of young Americans." Despite attacks from anti-cult groups, he received a favorable welcome from many religious scholars, such as J. Stillson Judah, Harvey Cox, Larry Shinn and Thomas Hopkins, who praised Prabhupada's translations and defended the group against distorted media images and misinterpretations. In respect to his achievements, religious leaders from other Gaudiya Vaishnava movements have also given him credit.
He has been described as a charismatic leader, in the sense used by the sociologist Max Weber, as he was successful in acquiring followers in the United States, Europe, India and elsewhere. After his death in 1977, ISKCON, the society he founded based on a type of Hindu Krishnaism using the Bhagavata Purana as a central scripture, continued to grow and is respected in India, though there have been disputes about leadership among his followers.
A.C. BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI PRABHUPADA

His mission was to propagate Gaudiya Vaishnavism, a form of Hinduism (a term which Bhaktivedanta Swami frequently denied) that had been taught to him by his guru, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, throughout the world. Born Abhay Charan De in Calcutta, he was educated at the prestigious local Scottish Church College. Before adopting the life of a pious renunciant (vanaprastha) in 1950, he was married with children and owned a small pharmaceutical business. After his death in 1977, ISKCON, the society he founded based on a type of Hindu Krishnaism using the Bhagavata Purana as a central scripture, continued to grow and is respected in India, though there have been disputes about leadership among his followers.
Jagjit Singh, born Jagmohan Singh (8 February 1941 -- 10 October 2011), was a prominent Indian Ghazal singer, songwriter and musician. Known as the "Ghazal King", he gained acclaim together with his wife, another renowned Indian ghazal singer Chitra Singh in the 1970s and 1980s. Their combination album comprising music from the films, Arth and Saath Saath is the HMV's largest selling combination album of all time Sajda (An Offering, 1991), Jagjit Singh's magnum opus double album with Lata Mangeshkar holds the same record in non-film category. He sang in numerous languages. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the government of India in 2003.
Singh is credited for the revival and popularity of ghazal, an Indian classical art form, by choosing poetry that was relevant to the masses and composing them in a way that laid more emphasis on the meaning of words and melody evoked by them. In terms of Indian Classical music, his style of composing and Gayaki (singing) is considered as Bol-pradhan, one that lays emphasis on words. He highlighted this in his music for films such as Prem Geet (1981), Arth and Saath Saath (1982), and TV serials Mirza Ghalib (1988) and Kahkashan (1991). Jagjit Singh is considered to be the most successful ghazal singer and composer of all time in terms of critical acclaim and commercial success. With a career spanning over five decades and a repertoire comprising over 80 albums,[1] the range and breadth of his work has been regarded as genre-defining. He is the only composer and singer to have composed and recorded songs written by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee — also a critically acclaimed poet — in two albums, Nayi Disha (1999) and Samvedna (2002).
Singh's 1987 album, Beyond Time, was the first digitally recorded release in India He was regarded as one of India's most influential artistes. With sitar legend Ravi Shankar and other leading figures of Indian classical music and literature, Singh voiced his concerns over politicisation of arts and culture in India and lack of support experienced by the practitioners of India's traditional art forms, particularly folk artists and musicians. He lent active support to several philanthropic endeavors such as the library at St. Mary's School, Mumbai, Bombay Hospital, CRY, Save the Children and ALMA.

Strugglin'
Mediaworks 2009. Film I made about the struggles of college students in a poor economy. Used a very large (and old) film camera that I can't remember the name of, with color negative film. Transferred and edited digitally. I think the end credits are really cute.
I only had six minutes worth of film to work with so I had to loop some stuff so I could keep the audio and just go with what I had. The audio was cut down from a half hour long interview. As you can tell, my footage was a little boring, I'm not used to having a limited amount of film and doing short shots. Usually I do long shots so I have lots to work with. There's a lot of things I would do differently, if I were given this assignment again, but I think this video is good for what I had to work with.
