Gede railway station:
Gede (Bengali: গেদে) is the last station and border checkpoint on the way to Bangladesh in Krishnaganj CD Block in Nadia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The corresponding station on the Bangladesh side is Darshana. It is the last station on the Sealdah-Gede section of Kolkata Suburban Railway system.
Gede was one of the stations on the Sealdah-Goalundo route of East Bengal Railway. With the partition of India in 1947, it became a border town. Thereafter there were three trains from Sealdah running into East Pakistan: the East Bengal Express, the East Bengal Mail and the Barisal Express. The services all ceased after the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. Freight trains ran on Petrapole-Benapole, Gede-Darshana and Singhabad-Rohanpur lines off and on since 1972 after the independence of Bangladesh, and more regularly after transport agreements were signed by the two countries in the 1990s.Radhikapur-Biral section was another section for movement of goods traffic. As of 2002, the Gede-Darshana section accounted for the bulk of the exports handled by the Indian Railways (both the Eastern Railway and the Northeast Frontier Railway together) for Bangladesh.
A direct train between Dhaka and Kolkata, named Maitree Express (Maitree is a Sanskrit word meaning friendship) commenced on 14 April 2008. The train is managed by Indian Railways and Bangladesh Railway. The approximate distance covered by Maitree Express is estimated at around 375 kilometres (233 mi), a stretch of 114 kilometres (71 mi) in India and a stretch of 261 kilometres (162 mi) in Bangladesh. The train follows the border point route at Gede-Darshana. The train runs on Saturdays and Sundays every week.Passengers of the Maitree Express are irked by the five-hour wait for immigration and customs clearance at the border stations of Darshana and Gede.

West Bengal
West Bengal (/wɛst bɛŋˈɡɔːl/; Bengali pronunciation: [pɔʃtʃimbɔŋɡɔ]) is a state in eastern India and is the nation's fourth-most populous state, with over 91 million inhabitants. Spread over 34,267 sq mi (88,750 km2), it is bordered by the countries of Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan, and the Indian states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Sikkim, and Assam. The state capital is Kolkata. Together with the neighboring nation of Bangladesh, it makes up the ethno-linguistic region of Bengal.
Ancient Bengal was the site of several major janapadas (kingdoms). It was also part of large empires such as the Maurya Empire (second century BC) and Gupta Empire (fourth century AD); and part of the regional Buddhist Pala Empire (8th to 11th century) and Sena dynasty (11th–12th century). From the 13th century onward, the region was controlled by the Bengal Sultanate, Hindu kings and Baro-Bhuyan landlords under the suzerainty of the Mughal Empire, until the British East India company took control of the region from the Mughals in the late 18th century. The company consolidated their hold on the region following the Battle of Plassey in 1757 and Battle of Buxar in 1764 and by 1793 took complete control of the region. Kolkata (or Calcutta) served for many years as the capital of British controlled territories in India. The early and prolonged exposure to British administration resulted in the expansion of Western education, culminating in development of science, institutional education, and social reforms in the region, including what became known as the Bengali renaissance. A hotbed of the Indian independence movement through the early 20th century, Bengal was divided during India's independence in 1947 along religious lines into two separate entities: West Bengal—a state of India—and East Bengal—a part of the newly created Dominion of Pakistan that later became the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1971.

Nadia is a female name that means 'hope', used predominantly in Italy, Spain, Greece, Romania, France, Russia, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Ukraine, Bulgaria and some countries in the Middle East, such as Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Morocco, Algeria, Persia and Oman. Its origins are in the Slavic and Ancient Greek languages. Variations include: Nadja, Nadya, Nadine, Nadiya, Nadiyya, Nadija and Nadiyeh .
In the case of the Slavic languages, the name Nadia is the word for "hope" in most of South Slavic languages, Nadiya (Надія, accent on the "i") is the Ukrainian word for "hope", while Nadzeya (Надзея, accent on the "e") is the equivalent in Belarusian, or Old Polish Nadzieja all of them derived from Old East Slavic. In Bulgarian and Russian, on the other hand, Nadia or Nadya (Надя, accent on first syllable) is the diminutive form of the full name Nadyezhda (Надежда), which also means "hope" and derives from Old Church Slavonic, it in turn, being a translation of the Greek word ελπίς (Elpis), with the same meaning.

Calcutta, or Kolkata as it has been known since 2001, is the capital of West Bengal and also the second largest city in India.
A city of contrasts that could not be more striking with slums, poverty and degrading conditions, while nearby, the wealthy enjoy all the finer things of life. Once a humble village on the Hooghly River, Kolkata became the capital of British India.
Close to the Victoria Memorial is the Orient's first Anglican cathedral, St. Paul's, a remarkable sacred building. Of Indo-Gothic design, it was built between 1839 and 1847 and is a legacy of British colonial rule on the banks of the Gulf of Bengal. The red brick Writers´ Building was formerly the headquarters of the East India Company and it was from there that trade was carried out across the entire world. It was also the administrative centre for Bengal, Burma and Pakistan.
Kalighat is the oldest pilgrimage destination in the world. Narrow pathways lead to a Shiva temple along with stalls selling souvenirs and religious offerings.T he sanctuary was built in 1809 and is still busy today as taxis and bicycle rickshaws wait for the thousands of pilgrims that go there each day. In Kolkata, the Hindu doctrine of a better life after rebirth is, for many, the only hope that they can cling to.
Nevertheless, Kolkata is one of the most fascinating metropolises in the world and also one in which chaos reigns supreme!

Darjeeling, India, is located in the very Northern part of the West Bengal state. Coming from Kolkata, it's hard to believe that Darjeeling is actually in the same state, it's such a vastly different place.
In order to get to Darjeeling, India, it's easiest to take the train to the nearest station which is located at New Jalpaiguri (known just as NJP by the train code). There's little to do in NJP, but from right outside the train station you can then board to a shared jeep and for 200 Rupees, you can take the jeep straight to Darjeeling. The jeep normally takes about 4 hours to reach the town and they will often stop for a few bathroom and snack breaks. The ride to Darjeeling is very windy and very uphill into the mountains, so if you get sick easily, be sure to take motion sickness medication. You will have some amazing views on the road!
Darjeeling, India, is an old hill station that offers beautiful views of the Himalayas. It's a small town and unlike other huge Indian cities, it's much quieter, peaceful, and it's a very nice place to just explore on foot (though not all the attractions are accessible on foot). So after arriving in Darjeeling, I first set off to explore the Chowrasta Square, which is a non-vehicle area with shops restaurants and cafes. There are also many trails leading from the square to other parts of the town. I explored a few of the footpaths leading in various directions to discover Buddhist Tibetan temples and other residential areas.
Probably the most famous thing about Darjeeling, India, is its production of tea; It's one of the most famous places in the world for tea. The climate, elevation, and rich Himalayan soil make it prime growing conditions. Surrounding Darjeeling you'll have a chance to see rolling tea fields and if you have time you can even visit a tea farm such as Happy Valley. Don't forget to buy plenty of tea in Darjeeling before you depart.
At the top of the main hill in Darjeeling is the Mahakal Temple, one of the most famous Hindu / Buddhist temples in the city. The temple is fully decorated by Tibetan colorful flags and there are lots and lots of monkeys, that can at times be aggressive. You can also walk around the area and explore the cave. Just be careful of the scammers in this area that try to ask you for donations. Another one of the most famous attractions in Darjeeling, India, is the Darjeeling Himalayan railroad which is better known as the Toy Train. It's an old locomotive train that runs of burning coal. You can go to the railroad station and purchase tickets daily for the joy ride, which is a 1.5 hour circuit that takes you on a leisurely ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom, the highest elevation railroad station in all of India. The railroad is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Tibetan Refugee Self Help Center is a center for Tibetan refugees where you'll find handicrafts and other things to purchase. When I went it was quite quiet and there actually wasn't much to do there. Other really popular attractions in Darjeeling, India, include the Himalayan Zoo and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, which are located on the same compound and accessed with the same entrance ticket fee. The zoo was interesting and included a snow leopard and lots of red pandas. The mountaineering institute is a museum that houses many artifacts from Himalayan mountain climbing expeditions.
While many choose to wake up and go to Tiger Hill for the sunrise of the beautiful Himalayan mountain range, I was so cold that I didn't wake up and just stayed on the balcony of my hotel to view the gorgeous sunrise over the mountains. Darjeeling, India, is a beautiful little town and you'll have a great and relaxing time when you travel there!

Mayapur is located on the banks of the Ganges river, at the point of its confluence with the Jalangi, near Navadvip, West Bengal, India, 130 km north of Kolkata (Calcutta). The headquarters of ISKCON are situated in Mayapur and it is considered a holy place by a number of other traditions within Hinduism, but is of special significance to followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, regarded as a special incarnation of Krishna in the mood of Radha. It is visited by over a million pilgrims annually.

Mayapur can be reached by boat, and more commonly by train or bus. ISKCON Kolkata operates regular bus service from Kolkata to Mayapur. Frequent train service is available to Krishnanagar, Nadia from Kolkata's Sealdah Station, then 18 km by auto or cycle rickshaw to Mayapur. During the visit one can see "the huge headquarters of the International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)" and "a long stream of saffron-robed devotees chanting" the Hare Krishna mantra.

Ambika Kalna or simply Kalna is a town, a municipality and headquarters of Kalna subdivision in Bardhaman District in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is situated on the western bank of the Bhāgirathi. The town is more popularly known as Ambika Kalna, named after a very popular deity, Goddess Kali, Maa Ambika. It has numerous historical monuments such as the Rajbari (the palace) and the 108 Shiva temples. The town of Kalna, is 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Bardhaman, the district headquarters.

Popularised by the sage Bhaba Pagla, the temple of Debi Bhabani holds a special puja on the last Saturday of the Bengali month of Baisakh. Close to it is Sri Gauranga Mandir. The temple complex houses Sri Chaitanya's manuscripts and personal belongings. A major landmark is the Siddheshwari Temple. It is dedicated to Debi Ambika, and it is after her that Kalna is also known as Ambika Kalna.
A major attraction is the Nava Kailash or 108 Shiv Mandirs. Built in 1809, the temples are constructed in two circles. One consists of 74 temples while the other circle has 34. The former has white marble and black stone shivlingas, while the latter has only white marble ones. Due to its ingenious planning, all the shivlingas can be seen from the centre of the temple complex.
The Krishna Chandra Mandir (A.D. 1751-1752), with its 25 steeples, is another popular landmark. Scenes from the epics are depicted on its terracotta walls. Doors remain closed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.Worthwhile mentioning are also Lalji Mandir (A.D.1739) with 25 steeples and Pratapeshvara Mandir (A.D.1849)of the rekha style.
Maijir Bari was established in 1752 A.D and has the Shyamchand Radharani Mondir. It has preserved a tradition of nearly 300 years and even today festivals like Dol Purnima, Rath yatra, Jhulan Purnima, Annakot and Rash are celebrated every year involving the people of the region irrespective of caste, creed or religion.
Projapoti Bari is also quite well known. This landmark house has a huge butterfly emblem on top. Hemanta Banerjee who inherited the house from his father also owned Sur-O-Sathi. Apurba Banerjee, brother of Hemanta Banerjee, started Kali puja in 1947.
Gopalbari Mandir consisting with 25 monuments signifies a perfect sculpture. On the walls of this Temples many Terracotta are ornamented. There is an image of copulation engraved here. A hall adjacent to the Temple for devotional dancing and musical performances was erected. It is an indication of traditional sculpture, located in Bhaduri Para.
In the year 688 A.D, Siddheswari Kali Mandir was established by Rishi-Amburish. First time the Goddess was worshipped through the ritual of earthen-pot (ghatt). The ghatt sticks to a stone winnowing tray. This auspicious image is made of a single Neem log. This image represents the Bamakali Idol. The responsibility of this Goddess was shouldered on the part of -1.Sri Taraprassana Adhikari, 2. Kaliprassana Adhikari and now, the 7th generation persionality Sri Sonatan Adhikari and Gopal Adhikari are the priest of this Temple. Long ago scarifies of human to the altar of the Temple was in vogue. But at present he-goat, ram, sugarcane, gourd etc. take the place of human. The Goddess is worshipped during the new moon in the month of Kartik.

While it features extensively in history books, the large potential for heritage tourism has been somewhat neglected. Of historic interest are Nizamat Kila (the Fortress of the Nawabs), also known as the Hazaarduari Palace (Palace of a Thousand Doors), built by Duncan McLeod of the Bengal Engineers in 1837, in the Italianate style, the Moti Jhil (Pearl Lake) just to the south of the palace, the Muradbagh Palace and the Khushbagh Cemetery, where the remains of Ali Vardi Khan and Siraj Ud Daulah are interred.
Hazarduari Palace is located in the campus of Kila Nizamat of Murshidabad. It was built in the nineteenth century by architect Duncan Macleod, under the reign of Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa (1824--1838). The foundation stone of the palace was laid on August 9, 1829, and that very day the construction work was started. William Cavendish was the then Governor-General. Now, Hazarduari Palace is the most conspicuous building in Murshidabad. In 1985, the palace was handed over to the Archaeological Survey of India for better preservation
The present Nizamat Imambara was built in 1847 AD by Nawab Nazim Mansoor Ali Khan Feradun Jah,who succeeded his father Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah in Murshidabad, India. It was built after the fires of 1842 and 1846 which burnt the wooden Imambara built by Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah. This Imambara is the largest one in India and Bengal.[citation needed]
The Katra Masjid (also known as Katra Mosque) is a mosque and the tomb of Nawab Murshid Quli Khan built between 1723 and 1724. It is located in the north eastern side of the city. Its importance lies not only as a great centre of Islamic learning but also for the tomb of Murshid Quli Khan, who is buried under the entrance staircase. The most striking feature is the two large corner towers having loopholes for musketry. At present it is maintained and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Government of West Bengal.
Bacchawali Tope is a gun, rather cannon which lies in the Nizamat Fort Campus on the garden space between the Nizamat Imambara and the Hazarduari Palace and to the east of the old Madina Mosque. The cannon consists two pieces of different diameters. The cannon was made between the 12th and 14th century, probably by the Mohammeddan rulers of Gaur. It originally lied on the sand banks of Ichaganj. However, it is unknown that how it came in Ichaganj. It was used to protect the city of Murshidabad from north-western attacks. After the 1846 fire of the Nizamat Imambara the Imambara was rebuilt, then after the completion of the new Imambara the cannon was shifted to its present site by Sadeq Ali Khan, the architect of the sacred Nizamat Imambara under the suggestion of Sir Henry Torrens, the then agent of the Governor General at Murshidabad.

The United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Sunday it had not recorded any case of polio disease in Somalia in the last three years, declaring the country polio free. The WHO said the country recorded the last case of polio in 2014 in the central part of the country but has since then remained free of the paralyzing disease ...
