German coach
Jurgen Klopp will be keen on clinching his first silverware with
Liverpool even before the end of the season, but he knows the challenge from
Manchester City will not be easy. The
Reds are gunning for their ninth League Cup title while the
Citizens will be looking for their second League Cup title in three years.
Manuel Pellegrini, who will part ways with Manchester City at the end of the season, will be very much up for guiding the
English side to at least one trophy so that he can say goodbye to the club on a high note.
Liverpool may not have a chance to win the
EPL this season, but
Man City do. Pellegrini's side are currently fourth in the table with 47 points just prior to the start of Gameweek 27, and they know they have to fight hard to get past
Tottenham Hotspur,
Arsenal and
Leicester City to win the
Premier League crown.
City are also in touching distance of progressing further in the
UEFA Champions League this year as well.
Klopp's side meanwhile would want to finish at least in the top five or six in the Premier League this season and also get past arch-rivals
Manchester United in the last 16 of the
UEFA Europa League to progress in the competition. But for now, the former
Borussia Dortmund boss has his focus firmly on the League Cup final.
"The qualification for the final was a great journey, and to lose the final is not the best thing, of course," Klopp told
Sky Sports. Liverpool won dramatically in the semi finals of the League Cup over two legs against
Stoke City to reach this stage. The Reds showed all the nerve as they got past their opponents 6-5 in penalties at
Anfield in January.
Manchester City had an easy progress, however. They got past
Everton with a
4-3 aggregate score in the semi finals to reach the League Cup final. "To win a title in February gives you a lot of trust to continue fighting for other competitions," Pellegrini was quoted as saying by the
BBC.
