While Iraqi special forces positioned in the southern outskirts of Fallujah halted their military campaign on Thursday, June 2, Shiite militias continued to consolidate control over the al-Saqlawiyah area, located along the city?s northwestern outskirts. Heavy clashes were reported between Islamic State fighters, the Hezbollah Brigades, and the Badr Brigades, leading to the death and capture of several IS fighters. Iraqi media reports indicate that Islamic State fighters have been removed from al-Saqlawiyah, and that Iraqi counterterrorism forces have been deployed for the next phase of the operation. Additional reports quoting Iraqi security officials claim that the military campaign to liberate Fallujah is 70 percent complete. While the outlying suburbs of Fallujah have been largely cleared of any IS presence, the city itself is heavily booby trapped.
