Police have suspended the search of a man missing in Lamington National Park.

The decision was made about 3.30pm on Tuesday to suspend the search until Wednesday morning due to fading light in the area.

The man has been missing since Saturday evening when he made a call to police alerting them that he was lost. When they reached his location on Sunday morning he could not be found.

On Wednesday about 40 SES volunteers as well as rangers from National Parks and Wildlife and police will continue the search for the man, believed to be aged in his 50s.

A spokesman for Queensland Police said they would also be seeking air support from Rescue 500 and PolAir1 to help find the man.

Overnight conditions in the park are expected to be chilly with the Bureau predicting the temperature to drop into the lower single figures.

A large search is under way for a man who has been missing in the Lamington National Park since Saturday evening.

The man, believed to be aged in his 50s, phoned police on Saturday evening saying he had become lost. They advised him to remain where he was until morning but when police arrived at the location he could not be found.

SES volunteers were activated to help search for the man along with the Rescue 500 helicopter and police helicopter PolAir1.

On Tuesday morning police set up a forward command post on Mount Gipps Road to control a concerted effort to find the man.

A spokeswoman for Queensland Police said the man had food and water but not a lot of clothing so there were concerns as the evenings became cooler.

The Lamington National Park covers an area of 206 square kilometres.
