A young man has captured his parents' final goodbye in a touching photograph, showing them both on life support, holding hands, moments before his father died.

Chris Minnini's parents were both admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Kingston Hospital in Ontario, Canada, at the start of May, the Independent reported.

Minnini's mother, Cindy Ireland, had suffered a heart attack while her husband of 23 years, Jim, had been battling lung cancer for eight years.

"It's the first time in the hospital's history two patients on life support were brought into the same room to be together."

"He was about to have his breathing tube removed for the last time, and even with my mom sedated he needed to say goodbye," 21-year-old Minnini wrote in a Reddit post.

"It's the first time in the hospital's history two patients on life support were brought into the same room to be together."

Jim died peacefully on May 4, while Cindy is home, "heartbroken but recovering".

The loss has been "incredibly hard", Mininni said, but the photos his brother took have helped, showing "true love never really dies".
