Shankar Jaikishan were one of the famous music directors in Bollywood. They worked together from 1949-1971. In 1971, Jaikishan died due to cirrhosis of liver. Shankar carried on with the banner of Shankar-Jaikishan alone til 1987 (his death). Their regular lyricists were Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri (over 80% of S-J's compositions). They four gave many hit songs. Other lyricists they worked with were Anand Bakshi, Anjaan, Indevaar, Rani Malik, Neeraj. They also chose Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar for most of their works. Beside Lata and Rafi, they worked with Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Suman Kalyanpur and they also introduced fresh singers: Sushma Shrestha (Poornima), Sharda. Some of their notable films include: Barsaat, Chori Chori, Anari, Aah, Brahmachari, Andaz, Mera Naam Joker, Suraj, Sangam, Professor to name some. From 1949-1971, they were regular music directors for Raj Kapoor films. They started also their career from a Raj Kapoor film, Barsaat which became superhit because of the songs they composed. Today, Barsaat remains as one of the best music album. Their main awards included 9 filmfare awards and government of India awarded them Padmashri (fourth highest civilian award) in 1968.
