Michael Valentine "Val" Doonican (3 February 1927 – 1 July 2015) was an Irish singer of traditional pop, easy listening, and novelty songs, who was noted for his warm and relaxed style. A crooner, he found popular success, especially in the United Kingdom where he had five successive Top 10 albums in the 1960s as well as several hits on the UK Singles Chart, including "Walk Tall" and "Elusive Butterfly". The Val Doonican Show, which featured his singing and a variety of guests, had a long and successful run on BBC Television from 1965 to 1986 and Doonican won the Variety Club of Great Britain's BBC-TV Personality of the Year award three times. Doonican had a gentle baritone voice and, according to The Guardian, he had "an easygoing, homely charm that enchanted middle England".
Doonican was born on 3 February 1927 in Waterford, Ireland, the youngest of the eight children of Agnes (née Kavanagh) and John Doonican. He was from a musical family and played in his school band from the age of six. In 1941 when he was a teenager his father died, so he had to leave De La Salle College Waterford, to get factory jobs fabricating steel and making orange and grapefruit boxes. He began to perform in his hometown, often with his friend Bruce Clarke, and they had their first professional engagement as a duo in 1947. Doonican appeared in a summer season at Courtown Harbour, County Wexford. He soon featured on Irish radio, sometimes with Clarke, and appeared in Waterford's first-ever television broadcast. Then he played the drums in a band on a tour through Ireland.
Val Doonican is often quoted as saying that it took him seventeen year's to become an overnight success. He was referring to his appearance, in 1964, on the top rated live TV show, Sunday Night at Th

On 17th June 2006, an unknown duo called The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican played, what they believed at the time, would be a one-off gig at Thawley's Pub in Wombwell, Barnsley in front of about 10 people. Ten years to the day, on 17th June 2016, the band, as they were to become, played a sold-out hometarn show at Barnsley Rock & Blues Venue to a 200-strong crowd. This is some rare audio from a wiped episode of the Val Doonican show from the original BBC series that ran during the sixties, while it is patchy and rough I hope it provides a glimpse of something that has been lost.

[Lyrics Val Doonican - 59th Street Bridge Song Feeling Groovy] Slow down, you move too fast You got to make the morning last Just kicking down the cobble stones Looking for fun and feelin' groovy Hello lamppost, what cha knowing? I've come to watch your flowers growing Ain't cha got no rhymes for me? Doot-in' doo-doo Feelin' groovy Got no deeds to do No promises to keep I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep Let the morning time drop all its petals on me Life, I love you All is groovy I got no deeds to do No promises to keep I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep Let the morning time drop all its petals on me Life, I love you All is groovy
evergreen
Where sun and wind play on a ring of bright water
That's where my heartland will be
The deer on the hill in the first snow of winter
the gull in the sky winging free
I wandered away from the dark crowded city,
Leaving my old life behind,
And came to a place where a ring of bright water,
Dazzled the care from my mind.
So I live with the wonder of the sky and the sea
And I'll always remember who revealed them to me
But now you are gone with your whirlpools of laughter
Racing me down to the sea
But I always smile when a ring of bright water
Echoes your laughter to me.
(key change)
But now you are gone with your whirlpools of laughter
Racing me down to the sea
But I always smile when a ring of bright water
Echoes your laughter to me.
Echoes your laughter to me
