Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus (Edition 1831) by Mary Wollstonecraft SHELLEY - Unabridged audiobook
A mentally unstable genius, Victor Frankenstein, inspired by the dreams of ancient alchemists and empowered by modern science, creates a humanoid but fails to nurture and educate it after it comes to life. It wanders alone into a hostile world, where fear of its size and ugliness subjects it to violence and ostracism, which in time it learns to blame upon its maker.
As compensation for its suffering, it demands that he create a companion with whom to share its outcast life. Moved by the creature's account of its sufferings, the scientist agrees, but a long period of procrastination awakens doubts that ultimately cause him to break his promise. In retaliation, the creature begins a campaign of vengeance.
Although its serious crimes are limited to those which will wound his maker's heart, Victor imagines much more widespread harm, supposing the human race itself to be the creature's intended victim. There then follows a chase into the frozen north, which the creature prolongs so as to destroy his pursuer by exposure and exhaustion.
This story, narrated by Victor, forms a frame surrounding the creature's tale of its wanderings, education, and unhappy encounters with human beings. Victor's narrative is itself framed within a series of letters written by the young mariner who rescues him from an iceberg while engaged in his own ambitious scientific endeavor, searching for the North Pole.
This novel was begun while the author and her lover, Percy Shelley, were in hiding from her father and Percy's wife on the shores of Lake Geneva, where they were the frequent house guests of Lord Byron. The young people all began to write "ghost" stories, but only Mary's was destined to enjoy success.
The novel was published in 1818. Percy contributed a preface and later made extensive emendations. After his death Mary herself thoroughly revised the text and published it again in 1831. This is the text read in this project.

Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story, because unlike in previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results.[1] It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays.
Since publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" is often used to refer to the monster itself, as is done in the stage adaptation by Peggy Webling. This usage is sometimes considered erroneous, but usage commentators regard the monster sense of "Frankenstein" as well-established and an acceptable usage. In the novel, the monster is identified via words such as "creature," "monster", "fiend", "wretch", "vile insect", "daemon", "being", and "it". Speaking to Victor Frankenstein, the monster refers to himself as "the Adam of your labors", and elsewhere as someone who "would have" been "your Adam", but is instead "your fallen angel." Mary Shelley (née Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin; 30 August 1797 -- 1 February 1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). Mary Shelley
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (née Godwin; 30 August 1797 – 1 February 1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. After Wollstonecraft's death less than a month after her daughter Mary was born, Mary was raised by Godwin, who was able to provide his daughter with a rich, if informal, education, encouraging her to adhere to his own liberal political theories. When Mary was four, her father married a neighbour, with whom, as her stepmother, Mary came to have a troubled relationship.
In 1814, Mary began a romance with one of her father’s political followers, the then married Percy Bysshe Shelley. Together with Mary's stepsister Claire Clairmont, Mary and Shelley left for France and traveled through Europe. Upon their return to England, Mary was pregnant with Percy's child. Over the next two years, she and Percy faced ostracism, constant debt, and the death of their prematurely born daughter. They married in late 1816, after the suicide of Percy Shelley's first wife, Harriet.

Mary Shelley (née Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin; 30 August 1797 -- 1 February 1851) was an English novelist, short story writer, dramatist, essayist, biographer, and travel writer, best known for her Gothic novel Frankenstein: or, The Modern Prometheus (1818). She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her father was the political philosopher William Godwin, and her mother was the philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft. Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by Mary Shelley about a creature produced by an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty-one. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823. Shelley had travelled the region in which the story takes place, and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her future husband, Percy. The storyline emerged from a dream. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for weeks about what her possible storyline could be, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made. She then wrote Frankenstein. Frankenstein is infused with some elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story, because unlike in previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results. The story is partially based on Giovanni Aldini's electrical experiments on dead and (sometimes) living animals and was also a warning against the expansion of modern humans in the Industrial Revolution, alluded to in its subtitle, The Modern Prometheus. It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories and films. Since publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" is often used to refer to the monster itself, as is done in the stage adaptation by Peggy Webling. This usage is sometimes considered erroneous, but usage commentators regard the monster sense of "Frankenstein" as well-established and not an error. In the novel, the monster is identified via words such as "creature," "monster", "fiend", "wretch", "vile insect", "daemon", and "it". Speaking to Dr. Frankenstein, the monster refers to himself as "the Adam of your labors", and elsewhere as someone who "would have" been "your Adam", but is instead your "fallen angel." Although its serious crimes are limited to those which will wound his maker's heart, Victor imagines much more widespread harm, supposing the human race itself to be the creature's intended victim. There then follows a chase into the frozen north, which the creature prolongs so as to destroy his pursuer by exposure and exhaustion.
This story, narrated by Victor, forms a frame surrounding the creature's tale of its wanderings, education, and unhappy encounters with human beings. Victor's narrative is itself framed within a series of letters written by the young mariner who rescues him from an iceberg while engaged in his own ambitious scientific endeavor, searching for the North Pole.
This novel was begun while the author and her lover, Percy Shelley, were in hiding from her father and Percy's wife on the shores of Lake Geneva, where they were the frequent house guests of Lord Byron. The young people all began to write "ghost" stories, but only Mary's was destined to enjoy success.
The novel was published in 1818. Percy contributed a preface and later made extensive emendations. After his death Mary herself thoroughly revised the text and published it again in 1831. This is the text read in this project.

As compensation for its suffering, it demands that he create a companion with whom to share its outcast life. Moved by the creature's account of its sufferings, the scientist agrees, but a long period of procrastination awakens doubts that ultimately cause him to break his promise. In retaliation, the creature begins a campaign of vengeance.
Although its serious crimes are limited to those which will wound his maker's heart, Victor imagines much more widespread harm, supposing the human race itself to be the creature's intended victim. There then follows a chase into the frozen north, which the creature prolongs so as to destroy his pursuer by exposure and exhaustion.
This story, narrated by Victor, forms a frame surrounding the creature's tale of its wanderings, education, and unhappy encounters with human beings. Victor's narrative is itself framed within a series of letters written by the young mariner who rescues him from an iceberg while engaged in his own ambitious scientific endeavor, searching for the North Pole.
This novel was begun while the author and her lover, Percy Shelley, were in hiding from her father and Percy's wife on the shores of Lake Geneva, where they were the frequent house guests of Lord Byron. The young people all began to write "ghost" stories, but only Mary's was destined to enjoy success.
The novel was published in 1818. Percy contributed a preface and later made extensive emendations. After his death Mary herself thoroughly revised the text and published it again in 1831. This is the text read in this project.

Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story, because unlike in previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results.[1] It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays.
Since publication of the novel, the name "Frankenstein" is often used to refer to the monster itself, as is done in the stage adaptation by Peggy Webling. This usage is sometimes considered erroneous, but usage commentators regard the monster sense of "Frankenstein" as well-established and an acceptable usage. In the novel, the monster is identified via words such as "creature," "monster", "fiend", "wretch", "vile insect", "daemon", "being", and "it". FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley (Dramatic Reading) - FULL AudioBook | Greatest AudioBooks - Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley about eccentric scientist Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Shelley started writing the story when she was eighteen, and the novel was published when she was twenty. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley's name appears on the second edition, published in France in 1823.
Shelley had travelled through Europe in 1814, journeying along the river Rhine in Germany with a stop in Gernsheim which is just 17 km (10 mi) away from Frankenstein Castle, where two centuries before an alchemist was engaged in experiments. Later, she traveled in the region of Geneva (Switzerland)—where much of the story takes place—and the topics of galvanism and other similar occult ideas were themes of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy Shelley. Mary, Percy, Lord Byron, and John Polidori decided to have a competition to see who could write the best horror story. After thinking for days, Shelley dreamt about a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had made; her dream later evolved into the story within the novel.
Frankenstein is infused with elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. Brian Aldiss has argued that it should be considered the first true science fiction story, because unlike in previous stories with fantastical elements resembling those of later science fiction, the central character "makes a deliberate decision" and "turns to modern experiments in the laboratory" to achieve fantastic results. It has had a considerable influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of horror stories, films, and plays. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia.org)

En 1814, a los dieciséis años de edad, Mary abandonó su hogar y su país con el poeta Percy Shelley, con el que había iniciado una relación a pesar de estar casado. La pareja viajó a Francia y a Suiza. Perdidamente enamorada de Percy B. Shelley desde la primera vez que lo vio, Godwin, no puso ningún reparo en que corriera tras él. No fue ese el caso de la esposa del poeta quien, humillada, ofendida y embaraza siguió a la feliz pareja hasta La Spezia, localidad de la costa italiana en que se establecieron. A los desarreglos deducibles de semejante situación no tardó en sumarse el mismísimo Byron, siempre afecto a toda clase de desórdenes.
John Clute, en su interesante "Enciclopedia de la Ciencia Ficción", no duda en afirmar que una hermana de Mary, a la sazón también alojada en La Spezia, frecuentaba la cama del lord. En cualquier caso, la comunidad se deshace con los suicidios de una segunda hermana de Mary y de la esposa de Shelley.
Contrajeron matrimonio en 1816, después de que la primera esposa de Shelley se quitara la vida ahogándose. Fruto de esta convivencia fueron varios embarazos y un único hijo, un varón, sólo el pequeño Percy Florence sobrevivió a la infancia.
Creadora del libro que inauguró la ciencia ficción y que aún hoy se erige como uno de los grandes relatos de horror de todos los tiempos; en 1818 publicó la primera y más importante de sus obras, la novela Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo. Según parece, escribió la historia de Victor Frankenstein por una apuesta. La noche del 16 de junio de 1816, se reunió con Lord Byron y otros en una villa en los alrededores de Ginebra. Encerrados en la casa por una tormenta, se leyeron cuentos de terror para entretenerse. Mary imaginó entonces a Frankestein inspirada en una pesadilla que tuvo a los dieciocho años de edad. Escribió la novela tras una apuesta con Byron, tal y como narra ella misma en el prólogo de la edición de "Frankenstein" de 1831. Esta obra, un logro más que notable para una autora de sólo 20 años, se convirtió de inmediato en un éxito de crítica y público. La historia de Frankenstein, estudiante de lo oculto y de su criatura subhumana creada a partir de cadáveres humanos, se ha llevado al teatro y al cine en varias ocasiones.
No logró tal popularidad con ninguna de sus obras posteriores o la excelencia de esta primera, pese a que escribió otras cuatro novelas, varios libros de viajes, relatos y poemas. Su novela El último hombre (1826), considerada lo mejor de su producción, narra la futura destrucción de la raza humana por una terrible plaga. Lodore (1835) es una autobiografía novelada. Tras la muerte de su esposo, en 1822, Mary se dedicó a difundir la obra del poeta. Publicó así sus Poemas póstumos (1824) y editó sus Obras poéticas (1839) con valiosas y detalladas notas.
Mary Shelley falleció en Londres, mientras dormía, el 1 de febrero de 1851. Su última voluntad fue ser enterrada junto a sus padres. Descansan en el cementerio de St Peter, Bournemouth.

Hija del filósofo William Godwin y de la escritora y feminista Mary Wollstonecraft. A los pocos días de su nacimiento su madre ,quien había escrito Vindication of Women Rights, murió de unas fiebres dejando a su marido al cuidado de Mary y de su hermana de tres años y medio Fanny Imlay. Casado Godwin posteriormente con una viuda que ya tenía dos hijas con la que el filósofo alumbraría un nuevo vástago.
En 1814, a los dieciséis años de edad, Mary abandonó su hogar y su país con el poeta Percy Shelley, con el que había iniciado una relación a pesar de estar casado. La pareja viajó a Francia y a Suiza. Perdidamente enamorada de Percy B. Shelley desde la primera vez que lo vio, Godwin, no puso ningún reparo en que corriera tras él. No fue ese el caso de la esposa del poeta quien, humillada, ofendida y embaraza siguió a la feliz pareja hasta La Spezia, localidad de la costa italiana en que se establecieron. A los desarreglos deducibles de semejante situación no tardó en sumarse el mismísimo Byron, siempre afecto a toda clase de desórdenes.
John Clute, en su interesante "Enciclopedia de la Ciencia Ficción", no duda en afirmar que una hermana de Mary, a la sazón también alojada en La Spezia, frecuentaba la cama del lord. En cualquier caso, la comunidad se deshace con los suicidios de una segunda hermana de Mary y de la esposa de Shelley.
Contrajeron matrimonio en 1816, después de que la primera esposa de Shelley se quitara la vida ahogándose. Fruto de esta convivencia fueron varios embarazos y un único hijo, un varón, sólo el pequeño Percy Florence sobrevivió a la infancia.
Creadora del libro que inauguró la ciencia ficción y que aún hoy se erige como uno de los grandes relatos de horror de todos los tiempos; en 1818 publicó la primera y más importante de sus obras, la novela Frankenstein o el moderno Prometeo. Según parece, escribió la historia de Victor Frankenstein por una apuesta. La noche del 16 de junio de 1816, se reunió con Lord Byron y otros en una villa en los alrededores de Ginebra. Encerrados en la casa por una tormenta, se leyeron cuentos de terror para entretenerse. Mary imaginó entonces a Frankestein inspirada en una pesadilla que tuvo a los dieciocho años de edad. Escribió la novela tras una apuesta con Byron, tal y como narra ella misma en el prólogo de la edición de "Frankenstein" de 1831. Esta obra, un logro más que notable para una autora de sólo 20 años, se convirtió de inmediato en un éxito de crítica y público. La historia de Frankenstein, estudiante de lo oculto y de su criatura subhumana creada a partir de cadáveres humanos, se ha llevado al teatro y al cine en varias ocasiones.
No logró tal popularidad con ninguna de sus obras posteriores o la excelencia de esta primera, pese a que escribió otras cuatro novelas, varios libros de viajes, relatos y poemas. Su novela El último hombre (1826), considerada lo mejor de su producción, narra la futura destrucción de la raza humana por una terrible plaga. Lodore (1835) es una autobiografía novelada. Tras la muerte de su esposo, en 1822, Mary se dedicó a difundir la obra del poeta. Publicó así sus Poemas póstumos (1824) y editó sus Obras poéticas (1839) con valiosas y detalladas notas.
Mary Shelley falleció en Londres, mientras dormía, el 1 de febrero de 1851. Su última voluntad fue ser enterrada junto a sus padres. Descansan en el cementerio de St Peter, Bournemouth.
