The Emperor Penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and is endemic to Antarctica. The male and female are similar in plumage and size, reaching 122 cm (48 in) in height and weighing anywhere from 22 to 45 kg (49 to 99 lb). The dorsal side and head are black and sharply delineated from the white belly, pale-yellow breast and bright-yellow ear patches. Like all penguins it is flightless, with a streamlined body, and wings stiffened and flattened into flippers for a marine habitat.
Its diet consists primarily of fish, but can also include crustaceans, such as krill, and cephalopods, such as squid. In hunting, the species can remain submerged up to 18 minutes, diving to a depth of 535 m (1,755 ft). It has several adaptations to facilitate this, including an unusually structured hemoglobin to allow it to function at low oxygen levels, solid bones to reduce barotrauma, and the ability to reduce its metabolism and shut down non-essential organ functions.

The story of the emperor penguins and their reproductive cycle is unique. It combines love, drama, courage and adventure and is set in the heart of the Antarctic, the world’s most isolated and inhospitable region.

Emperor penguins at risk of extinction, scientists warn
Africa's only species of penguins, commonly known as the black-footed penguin, is at risk of extinction as its main food source of small fish has migrated away, experts say.
Global warming of ocean waters has seen sardines and anchovies moving south to cooler waters, leading to a catastrophic drop in the numbers of African Penguins seen along South Africa's west coast, they report.
The population of the flightless birds, long a tourist attraction around Cape Town, has plummeted 90 percent since 2004, according to the country's Department of Environmental Affairs.
Also found in Namibia, the black-footed penguin is Africa only native penguin

Africa's only species of penguins, commonly known as the black-footed penguin, is at risk of extinction as its main food source of small fish has migrated away, experts say.
Global warming of ocean waters has seen sardines and anchovies moving south to cooler waters, leading to a catastrophic drop in the numbers of African Penguins seen along South Africa's west coast, they report.
The population of the flightless birds, long a tourist attraction around Cape Town, has plummeted 90 percent since 2004, according to the country's Department of Environmental Affairs.
Also found in Namibia, the black-footed penguin is Africa only native penguin species. It is also known as the jackass penguin, for its loud braying call.
South Africa's largest penguin colony contained a million birds in the 1930s, but today the country and Namibia together host less than 100,000 penguins.

STORYLINE
An emperor penguin found on a beach in New Zealand, who has since become an internet sensation, is now ready to return to the wild, staff at Wellington Zoo say.
"Happy Feet" has been receiving medical and nutritional care after he was found on a beach six weeks ago.
The penguin was discovered on 20 June on Peka Peka Beach, about 40 miles (65 kilometres) northwest of Wellington and far from his Antarctic feeding grounds.
He was moved to Wellington Zoo four days later after becoming ill from eating sand, which he likely mistook for snow.
He has since gained weight and been given a clean bill of health to be returned to the ocean.
"We''ve pretty much made him a mini-glacier to hang out on, and we''re managing to keep the temperature really cold for him, so he''s pretty comfortable," Dr. Lisa Argilla, manager of veterinary science at Wellington Zoo said.
"I guess as he is feeling much better, he''s been roaming around his room a lot more, he''s been playing with his thermometer," she added.
He is estimated to be about three years old and stands about three feet (one metre) high. Since arriving at the zoo, he has put on about nine pounds (four kilograms) and now weighs 57 pounds (26 kilograms).
Local television station TV3 set up a webcam on 30 June in the small, ice-filled room at the zoo after his unusual journey captured worldwide interest.
He now attracts an online following of more than 120-thousand people, logging onto the Web camera to monitor his every movement.
Through a public campaign, the zoo has raised the 10-thousand US dollars needed to cover the costs of housing Happy Feet, a zoo spokeswoman said.
It has also raised about eight-thousand US dollars toward the costs of returning him to the sub-Antarctic ocean south of New Zealand.
That trip could cost up to 30-thousand US dollars.
It''s expected thousands will follow his progress after he''s released into the wild, when feeds from a GPS tracker unit attached to his back will be posted online.

The Blue Planet Episode 4 Frozen Seas - BBC Documentay Full Episodes Narrated by David Attenborough. This episode compares oceanic life in the Arctic and Antarctica. The winter in these regions brings temperatures of minus 50 °C and frozen seas that create the biggest challenge. However, there are polynyas in the Arctic, which are free of ice owing to the pressure of currents on either side, and such places do provide refuge for some species, like the walrus and the bowhead whale. A pod of belugas is shown: their movements are limited to a single hole in the ice — therefore putting them at risk of attack from polar bears. Everything changes w

Emperor Penguin Films - Music Video Competition 2013
Beauty Under Antarctica's Ice Sheet, Icebergs & Penguins [Wildlife Documentary HD] Antarctica is Earth's southernmost continent, containing the geographic South Pole. It is situated in the Antarctic region of the Southern Hemisphere, almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle, and is surrounded by the Southern Ocean. At 14.0 million km2 (5.4 million sq mi), it is the fifth-largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. For comparison, Antarctica is nearly twice the size of Australia. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) in thickness, which extends to all but the northernmost reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula. Beauty Under Antarctica's Ice Sheet, Icebergs & Penguins [Wildlife Documentary HD].
Antarctica, on average, is the coldest, driest, and windiest continent, and has the highest average elevation of all the continents. Antarctica is considered a desert, with annual precipitation of only 200 mm (8 inches) along the coast and far less inland. The temperature in Antarctica has reached −89 °C (−129 °F). There are no permanent human residents, but anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 people reside throughout the year at the research stations scattered across the continent. Only cold-adapted organisms survive, including many types of algae, bacteria, fungi, plants, protista, and certain animals, such as mites, nematodes, penguins, seals and tardigrades. Vegetation where it occurs is tundra. Beauty Under Antarctica's Ice Sheet, Icebergs & Penguins [Wildlife Documentary HD].
Few terrestrial vertebrates live in Antarctica. Invertebrate life includes microscopic mites like the Alaskozetes antarcticus, lice, nematodes, tardigrades, rotifers, krill and springtails. The flightless midge Belgica antarctica, up to 6 millimetres (0.2 in) in size, is the largest purely terrestrial animal in Antarctica. The snow petrel is one of only three birds that breed exclusively in Antarctica. Beauty Under Antarctica's Ice Sheet, Icebergs & Penguins [Wildlife Documentary HD].
Varieties of marine animals exist and rely, directly or indirectly, on the phytoplankton. Antarctic sea life includes penguins, blue whales, orcas, colossal squids and fur seals. The emperor penguin is the only penguin that breeds during the winter in Antarctica, while the Adélie penguin breeds farther south than any other penguin. The rockhopper penguin has distinctive feathers around the eyes, giving the appearance of elaborate eyelashes. King penguins, chinstrap penguins, and gentoo penguins also breed in the Antarctic. The first Planet Earth episode illustrates a journey around the globe and reveals the effect of gradual climatic change and seasonal transitions en route. During Antarctica's winter, emperor penguins endure four months of darkness, with no food, in temperatures of −70 °C (−94 °F). Meanwhile, as spring arrives in the Arctic, polar bear cubs take their first steps into a world of rapidly thawing ice. In northern Canada, 3 million caribou complete an overland migration of 3,200 kilometres (2,000 mi), longer than that of any animal, and are hunted by wolves during its journey. The forests of eastern Russia are home to the Amur leopard; with a population of just 40 individuals in the wild, it is now the world's rarest cat. This is primarily because of the destruction of its habitat, and Attenborough states that it "symbolises the fragility of our natural heritage". However, in the tropics, the jungle that covers 3% of the planet's surface supports 50% of its species. Other species shown include New Guinea's birds of paradise, African hunting dogs in their efficient pursuit of impala, elephants in Africa migrating towards the waters of the Okavango Delta, a seasonal bloom of life in the otherwise arid Kalahari Desert, and 300,000 migrating Baikal teal, containing the world's entire population of the species in one flock. The Planet Earth Diaries segment shows how the wild dog hunt was filmed unobtrusively with the aid of the Heligimbal, a powerful, gyro-stabilised camera mounted beneath a helicopter

The Planet Earth Diaries segment shows how the wild dog hunt was filmed unobtrusively with the aid of the Heligimbal, a powerful, gyro-stabilised camera mounted beneath a helicopter.

The Blue Planet Episode 4 Frozen Seas | BBC Documentay
Everything changes with the arrival of summer, when melting ice brings a variety of migratory visitors. At the other end of the planet, in the Antarctic, winter is even more harsh, but emperor penguins and Weddell seals stay throughout. Under the sea ice, krill shrink in size and revert to their juvenile form in order to save energy. Chinstrap penguins overwinter to the north, beyond the ice, but return during the spring to breed. Having managed to get ashore, they have to walk a great distance to find a nest site, and the most favoured is Zavodovski Island, an active volcano whose warmth keeps ice from forming. Further south, as the sea ice breaks up, humpback and minke whales appear, their target the abundant krill. The leopard seal is the Antarctic's top predator. It is most effective underwater, and emperor penguins propel themselves at speed through its territory. Nonetheless, it almost invariably makes a kill.

Winter Frozen Planet Episode 5 of 7 There is no greater test for life than winter, as temperatures plummet to 70 below and winds reach 200kph. Darkness and ice extend across the polar regions and only a few remarkable survivors gamble on remaining.
We join a female polar bear trekking into the Arctic mountains to give birth as the first blizzards arrive. Out on the frozen ocean, the entire world's population of spectacled eider ducks brave the winter in a giant ice hole kept open by ferocious currents. Arctic forests transform into a wonderland of frost and snow - the scene of a desperate and bloody battle between wolf and bison, but also where a remarkable alliance between raven and wolverine is made. Beneath the snow lies a magical world of winter survivors. Here tiny voles dodge the clutches of the great grey owl, but cannot escape the ultimate under-show predator - the least weasel.
Midwinter and a male polar bear wanders alone across the dark, empty icescape. Below the snow, polar bear cubs begin life in an icy den while fantastical auroras light the night skies above. In Antarctica, we join male emperor penguins in their darkest hour, battling to protect precious eggs from fierce polar storms. Weddell seals escape to a hidden world of jewel-coloured corals and alien-looking creatures but frozen devastation follows as sinister ice stalactites reach down with deadly effect.
The sun finally returns, and with it comes the female emperor penguins, sleek and fat, ready to deliver the first meal to their precious chick. Having survived winter, this ultimate ice family now have a head start in raising baby. The adelies flood back and as the ice edge bustles with life, male emperor penguins can finally return to the sea.

The story of the emperor penguins and their reproductive cycle is unique. It combines love, drama, courage and adventure and is set in the heart of the Antarctic, the world’s most isolated and inhospitable region.
This story from the natural kingdom has been perpetuating itself for thousands of years, although man only discovered it at the beginning of the 20th century.
“The Emperor’s Journey” tells this extraordinary tale.

Full Episode: https://goo.gl/YmZraC, BBC Documentary narrated by David Attenborough David Attenborough: The sixth programme looks at the regions of the Arctic and Antarctica. The latter contains 90% of the world's ice, and stays largely deserted until the spring, when visitors arrive to harvest its waters. Snow petrels take their place on nunataks and begin to court, but are preyed on by South Polar skuas. During summer, a pod of humpback whales hunt krill by creating a spiralling net of bubbles. The onset of winter sees the journey of emperor penguins to their breeding grounds, 160 kilometres (99 mi) inland. Their eggs transferred to the males for safekeeping, the females return to the ocean while their partners huddle into large groups to endure the extreme cold. national geographic hd,soden, sodo
