Eve or the Apple is one for the K. GORDON MURRAY completist. It takes Naughty New York and rearranges many of the same performances, combining them with additional nudie footage and lovingly-shot tableaus of fruit (!). Needless to say, the resulting film is a strange pastiche of naked girls, striptease dancers, and farm fresh produce. Eve or the Apple immediately starts out with new footage of a topless coquette trying to entice the film’s cinematographer to run away with her. Oui, oui.... she is such a naughty girl! Those of us who’ve already seen Naughty New York will no doubt get a feeling of deja vu when we then meet famous artiste Henri de Louse who feels compelled to tell us the story of how he became the toast of the town. We see how an agent made Henri forsake painting pictures of fruit for the more profitable female form after dragging him to a nightclub, liquoring him up, and letting the ambience inspire Henri to sketch the various dancers that parade before his eyes. Naturally, Henri is quite enchanted by what he sees.... There’s a lovely brunette in the white poofy dress, an East-Indian blonde, LINDA LOMBARD singing her morose ballads, impressive LONNIE YOUNG bullfighting her way across the stage, perky VIVIAN MORGAN doing a striptease rockabilly boogie to “Mambo Rock” and, last but not least, ZORITA, the veteran burlesque queen (who looks like she’s been around since the Depression), emerging from a spider web and taking it all off. At this point Henri passes out and naked hallucinations begin.... Via more new footage, Henri sees that most of the gals in the audience are naked! Even the cigarette girl! All of a sudden we’re transported to the beach! Many of the gals Henri saw around the nightclub are frolicking about in their birthday suits outdoors. We even see adorable VICKIE MILES (from Goldilocks and the Three Bares, Nature’s Playmates and Scum of the Earth) and DELORES CARLOS (from The Beast that Killed Women and Naked Complex)! The girls play volleyball, badminton, go fishing, and have a weenie roast, all the while surrounded by fruit. There’s fruit everywhere! And, occasionally, a white gloved hand raises an apple or orange to the sky in some sort of wacky symbolic gesture that we assume has great significance to the Henries among us. Eventually, the flirtatious nudie cutie from the beginning of the film reappears and ties everything up nicely, so the cinematographer is free to go home and have his way with her. The End. By the early 1960s, burlesque films such as Naughty New York had come and gone. Which is no doubt why Mr. Murray tried to cash in on the Nudist craze of the day by rereleasing it with the added nature-loving naked nymphs. Oh, that Kagey!
