A beautiful trip to northern Europe: Helsinki - Turku - travel by snowmobile - Icehotel - Visiting Santa Claus - Rovaniemi
Our route takes us to Helsinki, Turku, the main cultural centre of the year 2011, and on to Oulu. We cross the Baltic Sea on an ice road to Hailuoto, from here we reach Kemi and further up to the far north with the destination Rovaniemi, the town close to the Arctic Circle.
We embark in Rostock, where we take a ferry to Finland. We already cross thick layers of ice.
01:30 Helsinki is the capital with a population of more than 580,000 residents. This beautiful northern city is Finland’s centre politics, economy, culture and faith.
Orthodox Christians have lived in Helsinki since the Russian rule. Their main church is the famous Uspenski Cathedral.
In Helsinki, we visit the senate square with the monument honouring Tsar Alexander the second for his Finland-friendly politics. The square is surrounded by wonderful classical buildings - the cathedral, the old senate house, the main building of the University and to the south the Sederholm House, the oldest building in the city.
03:26 Turku was named Cultural Centre in 2011 (slogan "Turku in flames"). From the 13th century when it was founded until the 19th century it was the most important city in Finland. The cathedral is the most significant example of church architecture in Finland. The best-known grave in the cathedral is the sarcophagus of Queen Karin Mänsdotter. Something really special is the Sunborn Princess Hotel, a converted luxury yacht.
6:15 Ride on a snowmobile through the wide and snow-covered landscape. We fish in ice holes and eat elk stew and reindeer steaks.
08:25 In the vicinity of Oulu we cross the Baltic sea on a layer of ice 70cm thick. On our route to Kemi we stop to look at the island of Hailuoto, connected to the main land by an ice road. On our tour with an icebreaker we stop for a very special attraction for tourists: a fun pool for "ice bathing"
11:45 Back on land we take a ride on a husky sled and let us pull through the deep white snow. In a spaciously designed nature reserve close Rovaniemi live animals like the wolf, the polecat, the lynx or the arctic fox. So we see them in an almost natural environment but still protected. Polar bears, however, are kept separately.
13:07 In our snowmobiles Snowmobiling we arrive at the end of the day at the exceptional ice-hotel. The construction of the hotel begins every year in mid-November and 5-6 weeks later, the hotel can be opened. It is undoubtable a great experience to sllep here. There is no heating and we have outside temperatures up to -40 degrees. In mid-April, we are closing the hotel, the ground starts warming up, then it doesn’t look very nice anymore. We just let it melt, by the end of June is has disappeared. The only thing left to clear up and store for next winter are a few km cables and hundreds of lights.
15:25 We attend a dancing lesson of the Finnish tango, and after this we visit knife maker. In his manufacture he produces the famous Finnish knife Puuko, a knife from elk antlers.
21:41 Certainly, at the end of our tour, there has to be the essential visit to Santa Claus, where we travel to in a sleigh, pulled by reindeer. Inside the building there is a special postal centre, staffed by elves and the legendary time clock. Santa Claus stops time there every year so he can visit all people in one night to deliver their presents.

Travel video about destination Finland.
Finland is a land of a thousand lakes and eternal forests, a land of log cabins and Orthodox churches - a midsummer’s dream in the extreme north of Europe.Helsinki, ‘The Daughter of the Baltic’, ‘The Gibraltar of the North’, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, as a trading centre, in 1812 Tsar Alexander The First made it the capital of the Principality Of Finland. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country’s first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.

AFTERBUZZ TV - AfterBuzz TV's Spotlight On edition, is a long form interview series featuring actors and TV personalities discussing their roles and shows as well as their thoughts, passions and journeys. In this episode host Kylie Hodges interviews Josh Thomas.
After making his mark as an award-winning and hugely-successful stand-up comedian and television panellist, Josh Thomas turned his hand to writing, acting and co-executive producing his own television show for ABC TV, inspired by his life and his comedy, called Please Like Me.
When Participant Media in the US chose to launch its brand new Pivot television network with Please Like Me and to co-commission a second season with ABC TV, Josh was on his way to being an international success story.
He has been awarded by the Australian Academy (AACTA) and the Australian Writers Guild for his writing for Please Like Me, and has been nominated for AACTA and Logie Awards for his performances in the show. In addition, the show itself has won Best Comedy at the AACTA Awards and been nominated as Best Comedy at the International Emmy Awards, Rose d’Or Awards, GLAAD Media Awards and Logie Awards. The show has gained critical acclaim across the globe, and has been named as one of the best TV shows of year by Entertainment Weekly, The New Yorker, Time, The A.V. Club and the Los Angeles Times. Following on from the show’s success in both Australia and the US, Please Like Me has also been licensed to air in Germany, France, Sweden, Canada, Finland and Israel.

How are you guys doing?
Bill: We are very well. We're currently working very hard. However, we are very pleased that we are here today.
You guys are really popular among young girls. So what do you guys think about Finnish girls?
Tom: We have been here so little time that we haven't seen many girls. Those few who have seen, are very promising.
How long are you going to stay here now, at Finland?
Bill: We came last night about one o'clock and tomorrow we should leave.
I have to ask from you, Bill, what do you do to your hair?
Bill: I do absolutely nothing. I don't use so much hairspray than I used before.
So how long does it take from you to make your hair like that?
Bill: Not long. The first time takes about an hour. Then no longer you dont have to much to deal with.

12 THINGS TO DO IN HELSINKI | Guide to Finland's Capital

Travel video about destination Helsinki in Finland.
Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

wn.com/12 Things To Do In Helsinki | Guide To Finland's Capital
Heading back to Finland - and specifically Helsinki - was our greatest surprise this summer. As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. Hop on a bicycle or kayak and you within a few kilometers you'll feel as though you're all alone at one with nature.
We've created this travel guide highlighting all of the top things to do in Finland with a specific emphasis on the city of Helsinki. From Finnish culture to Finnish Food an from Finnish Cuisine to other tourism fun related activities you'll find both the best attractions some of the more off-the-beaten-path quirky things to consider doing on your next vacation.

One of the highlights of visiting Finland was our opportunity to be based in the Finnish Archipelago region for several days at a lovely little cottage guesthouse in Dalsbruk - also known as Taalintehdas. From there we had the opportunity to do adventure sports activities such as sea kayaking, canoeing, bicycling and hiking where we spotted wilderness. Moreover, the laid back pace of life and ample free time ensured we had a chance to sample Finnish cuisine such as rye bread, salmon, cream cheese, Finnish beer, Finnish chocolate and other delicacies such as Finnish pizza with smoked salmon! Finnish food was an immediate hit with our taste buds.
Nearby we had the chance to go island hopping by boat visiting around Kimito Island in the Kimitoon region. Some of the top highlights
From the town of Kasnas we caught a ferry heading to Rosala - home to a fascinating Viking Center. From there we continued on to Bengtskär lighthouse - the most remote lighthouse I've ever visited.
Prior to leaving we made sure to shop at a Finnish supermarket where we picked up Salmiakki, Salmiakki beer and Karl Fazer creamy milk chocolate.
Overall, it was a great change of pace from the chaotic city life we're used to Southeast Asia. We had a chance to relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery and hospitality in the Finnish Archipelago.
This is part of our Travel in Finland series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Finnish culture, Finnish arts, Finnish foods, Finnish religion and Finnish people.

Located on the Aker River in Norway’s south east is the beautiful city of Oslo. As well as being the country’s capital and cultural heart, Oslo is also the gateway to Norway’s natural beauty.
In recent years, the rugged dock areas that launched so many adventures have been reinvented as an entertainment hub. Fashionable cafes and restaurants sit easily here amidst centuries of history.
There is a strong naval history here. Visit the Viking Ship Museum to see a stunning display of 800 year-old long-ships and learn how they learned to navigate without compasses. At the Fram Museum, learn how the crews of early polar expeditions survived in one of the coldest and most dangerous places on earth. The nearby Kon-Tiki Museum is a tribute to an epic adventure that captivated and inspired a world, exhausted by the second world war.
One of the world’s most respected awards, the annual Nobel Peace Prize also has its home here. Visit the Noble Peace Center which showcases the achievements of pioneers in world.
Another of Oslo’s premier buildings for which Oslo is known is its Opera House, just a short stroll away. Said to resemble a glacier, it’s gentle sloping roof is a popular meeting place and a great spot to enjoy a panoramic view.
Norway is home to one of the oldest monachys in the world and the Royal Palace, right in the centre of the city is their official residence. Enjoy the beautiful palace park, especially in the summer, when the sun doesn’t set until after 11.00 pm.
No matter where you wander in Oslo, this modern city with a heroic past is full of character, flavour and adventure.

Free, diverse school meals have been a part of Finnish food culture for nearly 70 years. Many schools arrange excursions to farms and companies and trips to go blueberry picking. Food deficit theme weeks are organised, as well as the learning of proper ways to eat. Education is also carried out in a cross-disciplinary manner. In the school food delegations, pupils participate in the planning of school meals, and during their trining at a work place period they may partake in the operating of the school kitchens.
The School Meal Network gathers school food makers, supporters and visionaries to the same table. The aim is to make sure that school meals, a Finnish social innovation, is seen and further developed as an essential part of our food culture. Our objective is to make the world’s best school meals even better.

Dancer choreogrpher Reetta-Kaisa Iles and musician Anne-Mari Kivimäki make up the duo called Puhti. It is a unique experience of songs and performances with pathos and humour, derived from the Finnish Carelian culture. This video is part of their hour long performance in 2012 at Helsinki's Seurasaari island. Itself a bastion of Finnish Folk culture and an outdoor museum, also a very popular recreational place close to the city centre.
