Fairy Tales: They’re sweet, magical stories for children, right? But in the early versions recorded by writers like the Brothers Grimm, they’re more like movies in the Saw franchise.
Cinderella. You probably remember how after Cinderella’s enchanted night with Prince Charming, she leaves behind a glass slipper, which the prince later uses to identify his mystery woman by shoe size. In the version of the story recorded in Grimm’s 1812 volume, Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters try to trick the prince by slicing off parts of their own feet to fit the slipper. They almost get away with it, until some helpful pigeons point out ... all the blood. Later, at Cinderella’s wedding, the pigeons peck the stepsisters’ eyeballs out.
Snow White. Cinderella isn’t the only fairy tale to feature brutal step-family revenge at the heroine’s wedding. In the Grimm version of Snow White, partygoers at Snow White’s wedding force her Evil Stepmother to put on a pair of searing-hot iron shoes and dance around in them until she collapses and dies.
Pinocchio. In the 1940 Disney film, the wooden prodigal son Pinocchio explores some shallow vices, like fibbing, smoking cigars and playing pool. But in the 1883 version of the story by Carlo Collodi, the world’s most lovable wooden puppet really hits bottom. Just one example: Pinocchio kills his magical cricket friend with a hammer.
Rapunzel. You know the basics: Beautiful young lady, imprisoned in a tower by a witch, freakishly long hair, dashing prince climbs the hair, et cetera. But in the Grimm telling, Rapunzel and the prince run into some really bad luck. After the prince visits Rapunzel – and apparently gets her pregnant – the witch lops off Rapunzel’s hair, banishes her to a desert, ambushes the prince in the tower and makes him take a dive off the top. And the prince, being unaware of the fact that he’s in a Grimm fairytale, fails to take the key precaution of protecting his eyeballs. So, he lands among some thorns that gouge his eyes out and blind him.
The Little Mermaid. If you go with the 1827 version of the story by Hans Christian Andersen, nobody in their right mind would want to be “part of your world.” In this version, the sea witch steals the little mermaid’s voice by slicing out her tongue and putting it in a seashell. At the end of the story, the prince abandons the former mermaid and marries another woman, and our heroine is given the option of stabbing the prince in the heart with a knife and bathing her feet in his blood to turn herself back into a mermaid.

1. The brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, were born in Hanau - close to Frankfurt - into a family of nine children, three of whom died in infancy.
2. Both brothers attended the University of Marburg where they studied law and medieval German literature. With little money in their family, the Grimms studied hard.
3. In 1808, Jacob was appointed court librarian to the King of Westphalia who was Jérôme Bonaparte - Napoleon's younger brother. It was around this time that the Grimms started to collect folk tales.
4. The German tourist board promotes a 600km 'Fairy Tale Route' based on the lives of the Brothers Grimm and the stories that they published.
5. There is a 2005 movie called The Brothers Grimm starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger, but it has little to do with reality. Jacob and Wilhelm are portrayed as traveling con-artists in French-occupied Germany during the late 18th century.
6. Wilhelm took responsibility for editing and rewriting the tales. For example, Rapunzel was edited several times to remove the sexual relationship between Rapunzel and the prince.
7. Many of Grimms' fairy tales were never originally intended for children. On their original Snow White tale, the stepmother is killed by wearing a pair of red-hot iron shoes.
8. Wilhelm married a family friend called Henriette in 1825. Jacob never married but lived with his brother and his wife.
9. Hansel and Gretel is a particularly important tale in German folklore as it describes forests as evil places. It may have originated during medieval famines when cannibalism did take place.
10. Wilhem and Jacob are buried side by side in a Berlin cemetery called Alter St. Mathäus Kirchhof. The graves are marked with simple black headstones.

The Brothers Grimm (German: Brüder Grimm or Die Gebrüder Grimm), Jakob Grimm (January 4, 1785 – September 20, 1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (February 24, 1786 – December 16, 1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, and authors who together collected folklore. They are among the most well-known storytellers of European folk tales, and their work popularized such stories as "Cinderella", "The Frog Prince" (Der Froschkönig), "Hansel and Gretel" (Hänsel und Gretel), "Rapunzel", "Rumpelstiltskin" (Rumpelstilzchen), and "Snow White" (Schneewittchen). Their first collection of folk tales, Children's and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen), was published in 1812.
The brothers spent their formative years first in the German town of Hanau and then in Steinau. Their father's death in 1796, about a decade into their lives, caused great poverty for the family and affected the brothers for many years. They attended the University of Marburg where historian and jurist Friedrich von Savigny spurred their interest in philology and Germanic studies—a field in which they are now considered pioneers—and at the same time developed a curiosity for folklore, which grew into a life-long dedication to collecting German folk tales.

Taylor Alison Swift (born December 13, 1989) is an American singer-songwriter and occasional actress. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, Swift moved to Nashville, Tennessee at the age of fourteen to pursue a career in country music. She signed to the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever hired by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift's self-titled debut album in 2006 established her as a country music star. "Our Song", her third single, made her the youngest sole writer and singer of a number one song on the country chart. She received a Best New Artist nomination at the 50th Grammy Awards.
Swift's second album, Fearless, was released in late 2008. Buoyed by the chart success of the singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me", Fearless attracted a crossover audience and became the top-selling album of 2009. The record won four Grammy Awards, with Swift becoming the youngest ever Album of the Year winner. Fearless also received Album of the Year plaudits at the American Music Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and Country Music Association Awards, making it the most awarded album in country music history. In 2010, Swift released her third album, Speak Now, which sold over one million copies in its first week. She then embarked on the 111-date Speak Now World Tour, which was attended by over 1.6 million fans and has become one of the highest-grossing concert tours of all time. The album's third single, "Mean", won two Grammy Awards for Best Country Song and Best Country Solo Performance. Swift is currently recording her fourth studio album, due for release in the fall of 2012.

But in the early versions recorded by writers like the Brothers Grimm, they’re more like movies in the Saw franchise. Cinderella. You probably remember how after Cinderella’s enchanted night with Prince Charming, she leaves behind a glass slipper, which the prince later uses to identify his mystery woman by shoe size. In the version of the story recorded in Grimm’s 1812 volume, Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters try to trick the prince by slicing off parts of their own feet to fit the slipper. They almost get away with it, until some helpful pigeons point out ... all the blood. Later, at Cinderella’s wedding, the pigeons peck the stepsisters’ eyeballs out. Snow White. Cinderella isn’t the only fairy tale to feature brutal step-family revenge at the heroine’s wedding. In the Grimm version of Snow White, partygoers at Snow White’s wedding force her Evil Stepmother to put on a pair of searing-hot iron shoes and dance around in them until she collapses and dies. Pinocchio. In the 1940 Disney film, the wooden prodigal son Pinocchio explores some shallow vices, like fibbing, smoking cigars and playing pool. But in the 1883 version of the story by Carlo Collodi, the world’s most lovable wooden puppet really hits bottom. Just one example: Pinocchio kills his magical cricket friend with a hammer. Rapunzel. You know the basics: Beautiful young lady, imprisoned in a tower by a witch, freakishly long hair, dashing prince climbs the hair, et cetera. But in the Grimm telling, Rapunzel and the prince run into some really bad luck. After the prince visits Rapunzel – and apparently gets her pregnant – the witch lops off Rapunzel’s hair, banishes her to a desert, ambushes the prince in the tower and makes him take a dive off the top. And the prince, being unaware of the fact that he’s in a Grimm fairytale, fails to take the key precaution of protecting his eyeballs. So, he lands among some thorns that gouge his eyes out and blind him. The Little Mermaid. If you go with the 1827 version of the story by Hans Christian Andersen, nobody in their right mind would want to be “part of your world.” In this version, the sea witch steals the little mermaid’s voice by slicing out her tongue and putting it in a seashell. At the end of the story, the prince abandons the former mermaid and marries another woman, and our heroine is given the option of stabbing the prince in the heart with a knife and bathing her feet in his blood to turn herself back into a mermaid. Jacob and Wilhelm are portrayed as traveling con-artists in French-occupied Germany during the late 18th century. 6. Wilhelm took responsibility for editing and rewriting the tales. For example, Rapunzel was edited several times to remove the sexual relationship between Rapunzel and the prince. 7. Many of Grimms' fairy tales were never originally intended for children. On their original Snow White tale, the stepmother is killed by wearing a pair of red-hot iron shoes. 8. Wilhelm married a family friend called Henriette in 1825. Jacob never married but lived with his brother and his wife. 9. Hansel and Gretel is a particularly important tale in German folklore as it describes forests as evil places. It may have originated during medieval famines when cannibalism did take place. 10. Wilhem and Jacob are buried side by side in a Berlin cemetery called Alter St. Mathäus Kirchhof. The graves are marked with simple black headstones. Fairy Tales: They’re sweet, magical stories for children, right? But in the early versions recorded by writers like the Brothers Grimm, they’re more like movies in the Saw franchise.
Cinderella. You probably remember how after Cinderella’s enchanted night with Prince Charming, she leaves behind a glass slipper, which the prince later uses to identify his mystery woman by shoe size. In the version of the story recorded in Grimm’s 1812 volume, Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters try to trick the prince by slicing off parts of their own feet to fit the slipper. They almost get away with it, until some helpful pigeons point out ... all the blood. Later, at Cinderella’s wedding, the pigeons peck the stepsisters’ eyeballs out.
Snow White. Cinderella isn’t the only fairy tale to feature brutal step-family revenge at the heroine’s wedding. In the Grimm version of Snow White, partygoers at Snow White’s wedding force her Evil Stepmother to put on a pair of searing-hot iron shoes and dance around in them until she collapses and dies.
Pinocchio. In the 1940 Disney film, the wooden prodigal son Pinocchio explores some shallow vices, like fibbing, smoking cigars and playing pool. But in the 1883 version of the story by Carlo Collodi, the world’s most lovable wooden puppet really hits bottom. Just one example: Pinocchio kills his magical cricket friend with a hammer.
Rapunzel. You know the basics: Beautiful young lady, imprisoned in a tower by a witch, freakishly long hair, dashing prince climbs the hair, et cetera. But in the Grimm telling, Rapunzel and the prince run into some really bad luck. After the prince visits Rapunzel – and apparently gets her pregnant – the witch lops off Rapunzel’s hair, banishes her to a desert, ambushes the prince in the tower and makes him take a dive off the top. And the prince, being unaware of the fact that he’s in a Grimm fairytale, fails to take the key precaution of protecting his eyeballs. So, he lands among some thorns that gouge his eyes out and blind him.
The Little Mermaid. If you go with the 1827 version of the story by Hans Christian Andersen, nobody in their right mind would want to be “part of your world.” In this version, the sea witch steals the little mermaid’s voice by slicing out her tongue and putting it in a seashell. At the end of the story, the prince abandons the former mermaid and marries another woman, and our heroine is given the option of stabbing the prince in the heart with a knife and bathing her feet in his blood to turn herself back into a mermaid.

Pinocchio. In the 1940 Disney film, the wooden prodigal son Pinocchio explores some shallow vices, like fibbing, smoking cigars and playing pool. But in the 1883 version of the story by Carlo Collodi, the world’s most lovable wooden puppet really hits bottom. Just one example: Pinocchio kills his magical cricket friend with a hammer.
Rapunzel. You know the basics: Beautiful young lady, imprisoned in a tower by a witch, freakishly long hair, dashing prince climbs the hair, et cetera. But in the Grimm telling, Rapunzel and the prince run into some really bad luck. After the prince visits Rapunzel – and apparently gets her pregnant – the witch lops off Rapunzel’s hair, banishes her to a desert, ambushes the prince in the tower and makes him take a dive off the top. And the prince, being unaware of the fact that he’s in a Grimm fairytale, fails to take the key precaution of protecting his eyeballs. So, he lands among some thorns that gouge his eyes out and blind him.
The Little Mermaid. If you go with the 1827 version of the story by Hans Christian Andersen, nobody in their right mind would want to be “part of your world.” In this version, the sea witch steals the little mermaid’s voice by slicing out her tongue and putting it in a seashell. At the end of the story, the prince abandons the former mermaid and marries another woman, and our heroine is given the option of stabbing the prince in the heart with a knife and bathing her feet in his blood to turn herself back into a mermaid.

5. There is a 2005 movie called The Brothers Grimm starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger, but it has little to do with reality. Jacob and Wilhelm are portrayed as traveling con-artists in French-occupied Germany during the late 18th century.
6. Wilhelm took responsibility for editing and rewriting the tales. For example, Rapunzel was edited several times to remove the sexual relationship between Rapunzel and the prince.
7. Many of Grimms' fairy tales were never originally intended for children. On their original Snow White tale, the stepmother is killed by wearing a pair of red-hot iron shoes.
8. Wilhelm married a family friend called Henriette in 1825. Jacob never married but lived with his brother and his wife.
9. Hansel and Gretel is a particularly important tale in German folklore as it describes forests as evil places. It may have originated during medieval famines when cannibalism did take place.
10. Wilhem and Jacob are buried side by side in a Berlin cemetery called Alter St. Mathäus Kirchhof. The graves are marked with simple black headstones.

Two men who have made a career out of spinning remarkable stories find themselves bringing them to life in this inventive fantasy inspired by the creators of some of the world's best-loved fairy tales. Will Grimm (Matt Damon) and his brother Jake Grimm (Heath Ledger) earn their living by traveling from village to village and vanquishing strange supernatural beasts that have been menacing the populace. Or at least that's what their clients think has been happening; as it happens, Will and Jake are confidence men who cleverly stage the ghostly attacks and then take payment for making the creatures they fabricated go away. One day, the brothers arrive in a town and offer to help its people drive away evil spirits, unaware that the community is bordered by a genuine enchanted forest, and that young girls in the village have been disappearing at a frightful rate. The Grimm Brothers must now learn how to deal with real magic, with the help of the lovely but fearless Angelika (Lena Headey). Directed by Terry Gilliam, The Brothers Grimm also stars Monica Bellucci, Peter Stormare, and Jonathan Pryce.
