7a. Mouth-to-Mouth Rescue Breathing, Basic Life Support (BLS) (2020)
The beginning of chapter 7 encompasses Mouth-to-Mouth Rescue Breathing. This method is different for adults and children, and infants. Those differences are highlighted. The instructions on Mouth-to-Mouth for children and adults, as well as Mouth-to-Mouth/Nose for infants, are explained step-by-step.
"Until an advanced airway is available, you should use mouth-to-mouth, mouth-to-mask, or bag-mask ventilation. Often times, a pocket mask or bag-mask is not available at the scene of an accident. Mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing is effective in delivering oxygen into the individual’s lungs.
Now let’s review mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing for adults and children.

Adult Rescue Breathing
http://www.ProCPR.org If we encounter someone who is unresponsive and is not breathing but has a pulse, rescue breathing should be performed. In rescue breathing, the rescuer is basically breathing for the person, helping to prevent brain damage and death in the patient. Rescue breaths should be given at a rate of one breath every five seconds for a minute. After a minute, reassess the patient for breathing and check for a pulse. If there is no pulse present, begin CPR on this patient. Video created by ProTrainings.

Now let’s review mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing for adults and children.
First, open the airway using the head-lift-chin-lift maneuver.
Pinch the nose shut to prevent air from escaping when delivering breaths.
Create a seal with your lips around the individual’s mouth.
Blow into the individual’s mouth and watch the chest. If the chest doesn’t rise, you may need to re-tilt the head or unblock the airway.
Give an additional breath. Make sure the breaths are duration of a full second.
If the chest doesn’t rise in two breaths, continue giving chest compressions.
Now let’s review the mouth-to-mouth/nose ventilations for infants.
First, open the infant’s airway using the head-tilt-chin-lift maneuver. Be sure not to hyperextend the neck.
Then create a seal with your lips around the infant’s mouth and nose.
Deliver the breath and watch the chest rise. Keep in mind that an infant’s lungs are smaller than an adult’s and need a smaller volume of air. If the chest does not rise, readjust the tilt of the head.
Then deliver a second breath and watch for the chest to rise. If you are unable to cover both the infant’s mouth and the nose entirely with your mouth, then pinch the nose close and then deliver breaths into the infant’s mouth. If the chest does not rise, readjust the tilt of the head.
Give an additional breath and watch for the chest to rise."

Infant mouth to mouth and nose technique.
In this video, we will be demonstrating the technique for infant mouth to mouth and nose technique. Follow these steps to give mouth to mouth and nose breaths to an infant.
Maintain a head tilt/chin lift to keep the airway open. Keep the head in the neutral position. Place your mouth over the infant's mouth and nose to create an airtight seal. Blow into the infant's nose and mouth, pausing to inhale between breaths, to make the chest rise with each breath. If the chest does not rise, repeat the head tilt/chin lift to re-open the airway, and try to give a breath that makes the chest rise.
When the airway is open, give two breaths that make the chest rise.
