Mental Ray (stylized as mental ray) is a production-quality rendering application developed by Mental Images (Berlin, Germany). Mental Images was bought in December 2007 by NVIDIA. As the name implies, it supports ray tracing to generate images.
Mental Ray has been used in many feature films, including Hulk, The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, The Day After Tomorrow and Poseidon.
The primary feature of Mental Ray is the achievement of high performance through parallelism on both multiprocessor machines and across render farms. The software uses acceleration techniques such as scanline for primary visible surface determination and binary space partitioning for secondary rays. It also supports caustics and physically correct simulation of global illumination employing photon maps. Any combination of diffuse, glossy (soft or scattered), and specular reflection and transmission can be simulated.
Mental Ray was designed to be integrated into a third-party application using an API or be used as a standalone program using the .mi scene file format for batch-mode rendering. Currently there are many programs integrating it such as Autodesk Maya, 3D Studio Max, AutoCAD, Cinema 4D and Revit, Softimage|XSI, Side Effects Software's Houdini, SolidWorks and Dassault Systèmes' CATIA. Most of these software front-ends provide their own library of custom shaders (described below). However assuming these shaders are available to mental ray, any mi file can be rendered, regardless of the software that generated it.
Autodesk 3ds Max, formerly 3D Studio, then 3D Studio Max is a professional 3D computer graphics program for making 3D animations, models, games and images. It is developed and produced by Autodesk Media and Entertainment. It has modeling capabilities, a flexible plugin architecture and can be used on the Microsoft Windows platform. It is frequently used by video game developers, many TV commercial studios and architectural visualization studios. It is also used for movie effects and movie pre-visualization. To its modeling and animation tools, the latest version of 3ds Max also features shaders (such as ambient occlusion and subsurface scattering), dynamic simulation, particle systems, radiosity, normal map creation and rendering, global illumination, a customizable user interface, and its own scripting language.
The original 3D Studio product was created for the DOS platform, by Gary Yost and the Yost Group, and published by Autodesk. After 3D Studio DOS Release 4, the product was rewritten for the Windows NT platform, and renamed "3D Studio MAX". This version was also originally created by the Yost Group. It was released by Kinetix, which was at that time Autodesk's division of media and entertainment.

Max Design was an Austrian game developer located in Schladming who developed various games like the Anno series. In 2004 the company abandoned its activities while selling all property including all of their game title licence-rights to Sunflowers – one of the companies they co-developed and -published with before on Anno 1503 and Anno 1602.
After the closing in 2004 the founders took a leave of absence and are since 2006 again active in the video game sector with the new company "Red Monkeys".
Max Design was founded in 1991 by the brothers Albert Lasser and Martin Lasser together with Wilfried Reiter.
The company became known for its challenging business simulation games.
Max Design developed and initiated while later conjointly with Sunflowers Interactive Entertainment Software released game 1602 marked even in two ways an edge. Selling about two million copies, it was by then most successful Austrian video game. It laid the foundation for the Anno series. Along with the sequel titles there was sold about 4.2 million copies as of April 2006. Sunflowers secured itself the first shares of Max Design within the cooperation. Otherwise, the continuing shift of balance of power between those two companies heading at Sunflowers was a lot discussed within the fan community with the appearance of Anno 1503.

In this lecture we cover the basic setup of a Mental Ray Daylight system using a Mental Ray Sun and Mental Ray environment sky. We then explore the use of photometric lights for setting up interior artificial lighting to give the effect of an indoor outdoor lit scene.
