This inexpensive (£6) dongle can receive anything in the frequency range of ~40Mhz - #1700Mhz. Since it's SDR (Software Defined Radio) its application is almost limitless. Demodulation is done by software therefore it is able to receive many types of transmissions as long as a suitable antenna is used.
Among examples of what can be received are Aircraft ADS-B, Air Traffic Control (ATC) chatter, FM Radio, DVB-T (Freeview), DAB (Digital Audio Broadcast), ISS Communcations, etc.
In this video I've used the SDR# to scan and tune in to the ACARS frequency that aircraft use to transmit these messages. This frequency is typically 131.550Mhz. ACARS is modulated over AM as an analogue signal. This is similar to how a computer's MoDem sends data over analogue telephone lines.
In this video I'm using the rooftop UHF TV antenna to receive the signal.
There is a need to install a 'Virtual Audio Cable' driver to pipe the sound from SDR#'s output back into PlanePlotter which can be used to decode ACARS messages.

ACARS stands for "Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System". They are data packets sent from aircraft that help air traffic control keep track of aircraft.

In aviation, ACARS is a digital datalink system for transmission of short messages between aircraft and ground stations via airband radio or satellite. The protocol was designed by ARINC and deployed in 1978, using the Telex format. More ACARS radio stations were added subsequently by SITA.
