In 1962, President Kennedy authorized the Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture, written by Daniel Patrick Moynihan to raise Americans' expectations of federal buildings.Democratic by Design: Guiding Principles for Federal Architecture commemorates the golden anniversary of this document, and celebrates its positive impact on government's investment in the public realm.
With narration by Luke Russert, the film features leading thinkers and practitioners in American architecture, who recount Senator Moynihan's criteria for design. Surveying the work of GSA's Public Buildings Service and other federal agencies, these commentators also examine the ways the guiding principles are interpreted to maximize the benefits of federal architecture. Democratic by Design is both a retrospective of a seminal policy achievement and a road map for another 50 years of excellence.
Democratic by Design reflects the special role of public buildings in American life. They aid in delivery of vital services, and they define roles and values of our society.

I had a lot of fun writing this as an engaging way to reinforce some of the vocabulary my students hear about when drawing Federal Architecture when they are in fifth grade. They are not expected to know it all, but some of the general ideas (highly organized symmetrical style promoted by Thomas Jefferson based on the earlier works of Palladio) are very much internalized. They enjoy the song and like to try to learn it. They like to catch me in a mistake. That is fine by me! (I hope you can tell it is based on the tune from Pirates of Penzance, "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General."

Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the United States between c. 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815. This style shares its name with its era, the Federal Period. The name Federal style is also used in association with furniture design in the United States of the same time period. In the early Republic, the founding generation consciously chose to associate the nation with the ancient democracies of Greece and the republican values of Rome. Grecian aspirations informed the Greek Revival, lasting into the 1850s. Using Roman architectural vocabulary, the Federal style applied to the balanced and symmetrical version of Georgian architecture that had been practiced in the American colonies new motifs of Neoclassical architecture as it was epitomized in Britain by Robert Adam, who published his designs in 1792. The classicizing manner of constructions and town planning undertaken by the federal government was expressed in federal projects of lighthouses and harbor buildings, hospitals and in the rationalizing urbanistic layout of L'Enfant's Washington DC and in New York the Commissioners' Plan of 1811.

But Michael is not alone and many Michaels later a Hairball Architecture will grow unless you use Enterprise Architecture (EA) to prevent that. EA is not just about some guidelines and principles, it is a process that makes sure the constant changes that inevitably happen in your landscape are good for your company as a whole and over time, not just good for the problem at hand.
The animation stresses the chaos-prevention goal of enterprise architecture and only touches lightly on the fit-for-the-future goal of enterprise architecture (at the end). Some architects (see comments below) say it wrongly depicts EA as too much about IT. I've posted a longer reply here: http://enterprisechess.com/2015/04/27/the-great-escape-ea-is-not-about-it/
