Henry Vilas Zoo is a 28-acre (11 ha) public zoo in Madison, Wisconsin, United States that is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Owned by Dane County, the zoo charges no admission or parking fees. It receives over 750,000 visitors annually.
In 1904, the city received 50 acres (20 ha) of land from William and Anna Vilas under the conditions that it be used "for the uses and purposes of a public park and pleasure ground". The park was named in honor of the Vilas's son, Henry, who died at a young age from complications related to diabetes. The family stipulated that the park always be admission-free.
By 1911, 28 acres (11 ha) of the park were partitioned into an animal exhibit, marking the creation of the zoo. The Madison Zoological and Aquarium Society was founded in 1914, and in 1926 became the Henry Vilas Park Zoological Society, which continues today. In 1964, the society was incorporated as a non-profit corporation.
For the hundredth anniversary of the zoo, the society operated a "Zoo Century" campaign to support a $27 million redevelopment of the zoo over the next 10 years. Plans call for a new Arctic Passage exhibit and a redesigned Children’s Zoo. The Arctic Passage which includes a major expansion that includes a new restaurant, and new enclosurees for seals and returning grizzly and polar bears opened May 23, 2015.

MADISON, IA - (CBS2/FOX28) Construction crews are moving at a frantic pace to build a massive new exhibit, Giraffes and Red Pandas are putting on a show and thousands of people are crowded along the walkways on this Wednesday afternoon as children smile, point and learn about the animals. Sadly, many small zoos can only dream about this kind of activity, even on their busiest day of the year. At The Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, it's just a typical afternoon of fun. From its humble beginnings in 1911, it's grown into a bustling education and conservation center. Directors like to call it the small zoo with big ideas and it is exactly that. Right now, nearly one-fourth of the exhibit space is under construction for The Arctic Passage. The new home for Polar Bears and seals will even in...

1st year for this holiday light event at the Henry Vilas Zoo!
This video was my Final project for Commarts 335 course at UW Madison in Fall 2005. I think I got an AB which is like an A- or a B+. That's pretty generous in my opinion. What is this movie about you ask? It's about Lions and Bears and the money it costs to take care of the beastly beast monsters. It also deals with the feelings that simple townies have towards living just a few yards away from these dangerous monstrosities of fury and death, which could probably kill them at any time. But how would I know? I really wasn't paying attention. In fact, if the Eric of now, 2007, went back to talk to the Eric of 2005, 2007 Eric would tell 2005 Eric how lazy he was and that all his academically based movie projects were offensive---in hindsight. That couldn't happen though. But then again, I wou...

Madison's Henry Vilas Zoo is excited to announce the birth of a rare African Lion Cub on Saturday, December 18, 2010. Born to proud parents, Henry and Vilas, the male cub was born weighing only about three pounds. The cub was 6 weeks old and weighing nearly 20 lbs. at the time of this video.
The Henry Vilas Zoo in Madison, Wisconsin hosts "Dreamnight at the Zoo," an exclusive cost-free event for pediatric patients from three local hospitals.
The year 2011 marks Henry Vilas Zoo's 100th successful year. In hopes of honoring the zoo's century of excellence, some of its oldest and most dedicated visitors reflect on their most cherished memories.
