Though 20% of the Continental population was Black, Black soldiers made up only 5% of the Continental Army. Collections in Clare Local Studies and Archives by Archivist Ciara Fahy and Librarian Michael Talty
Archivist Ciara Fahy and Local Studies Librarian Michael Talty give information on some of the collections held by the Local Studies and Archives section of Clare Libraries.
Ciara describes the Grand Jury Collection and the Barrett Collection, the latter referring to the Barret family who were active in Clare during the revolutionary period and later ran an auctioneering business in Kilrush.
Michael Talty describes three diaries by Mary Going (1840-43), Henrietta Butler Graham (1877-96) and Frances Ievers (1905-1934). The Power collection contains several volumes relating to the administration of the harbour in Clarecastle, from c.1880 to 1975 . These types of records are really rare, most harbour records in Ireland were destroyed in the Customs House fire in 1920.

A French Officer and the Franco-British Struggle for Global Dominance | Robert Selig
Jean-Baptiste Dupleix de Cadignan (1738-1824) entered the French army’s Régiment de Bourgogne-Infanterie as a lieutenant on April 15, 1754, five weeks before his sixteenth birthday. That same day, he began a diary that forms the basis for his over four-hundred page, two-volume journal owned by the Society of the Cincinnati. Commencing in April 1755, when he embarked for Louisbourg, Canada, Dupleix de Cadignan’s journal describes his experience as a prisoner of war in July 1758, his exchange the following year and additional imprisonment in Belfast after being captured off the coast of Sweden in 1760, his experience during the campaign against Pasquale Paoli in Corsica from 1769-1772, his expedition to St. Domingue (modern-day Haiti) following his promotion to lieutenant colonel in the Régi...

Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on the early modern history continues with a video on the American Revolution - the War of American Independence in which we cover all battles from the Americas to Caribbean and from Europe to India. In the video we discuss the main reasons why the Thirteen Colonies rebelled against the British crown, first battles at Lexington and Concord, and then near Boston at Bunker Hill. In 1775 and 1776 the war continued with the siege of Boston, American Declaration of Independence, Fall of New York, Battle of Long Island, Ten Crucial Days, the battle of Trenton and the battle of Princeton, while in 1777 the tide turned with the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Saratoga. France and Spain joined the war around this time, putting even more pressure on the British, who now had to defend their European and Caribbean holdings, too. Despite the fact that the battles of Monmouth Courthouse and Rhode Island were tactically inconclusive, the situation for the Britain continued to deteriorate. However, situation in the South, where there were more Loyalists and the British forces were led by Cornwallis, was better for Britain, which showed itself during the Battles of Savannah, Charleston, Waxhaws, Camden and Kings Mountain. However, the British situation continued to deteriorate leading to the famous battle of Yorktown, where the continental troops were led by George Washington. In the aftermath of the victory at Yorktown, the war continued, but the Americans now had the upper hand and were able to negotiate from the position of power, gaining recognition and becoming independent. We also cover the battle of the Sullivan island, Canadian campaign, including the battle of Quebec and Valcour island, Mohawk expedition, siege of Gibraltar, Second Anglo-Mysore War, Gulf Coast Campaign and Mobile campaign, Caribbean campaign including the battle of St. Kitts and Pensacola campaign, Siege of Negapatam and the Treaty of Mangalore.

This video is of beautiful Nelson’s Dockyard Marina ~ English Harbour Antigua West Indies.
Nelson’s Dockyard is a cultural heritage site and marina in English Harbour, Antigua. It is part of Nelson's Dockyard National Park, which also contains Clarence House and Shirley Heights. Named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who lived in the Dockyard from 1784 through 1787, Nelson's Dockyard is home to some of Antigua's sailing and yachting events such as Antigua Sailing Week and the Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting.English Harbour quickly became a focal point for the establishment of a naval base in Antigua. Its position on the south side of the island meant it was well positioned to monitor the neighboring French island of Guadeloupe. Additionally, the harbour is naturally well-suited to protect ships and cargo from hurricanes. In 1671 the first recorded ship to enter English Harbour was a yacht, the “Dover Castle.” It was chartered to the King by a Colonel Stroude for the use of the Governor of the Leeward Islands when he visited the islands under his jurisdiction and "chased ye pirates."
The first reference to the defence of English Harbour occurs in 1704 when Fort Berkeley was listed as one of the twenty forts established around the coast of Antigua. By 1707 naval ships used English Harbour as a station, but no facilities had yet been built for ship maintenance or repair. By 1723 English Harbour was in regular use by British naval ships and in September of that year the harbour gained a reputation as a safe natural harbour when a hurricane swept ashore 35 ships lying in other ports in Antigua, while the HMS Hector and HMS Winchelsea, both moored in English Harbour, suffered no damage. Soon British naval officers petitioned for the building of repair and maintenance facilities in English Harbour. In 1728 the first Dockyard, St. Helena, was built on the east side of the harbour and consisted of a capstan house for careening ships, a stone storehouse, and three wooden sheds for the storage of careening gear. There were no quarters for dockyard staff or visiting sailors and the seamen themselves conducted all work and repairs on the ships. Naval operations in English Harbour soon outgrew the small original dockyard and plans were made to develop the western side of the harbour with more facilities.
Admiral's Inn (the former Pitch and Tar Store)
Construction of the modern Naval Dockyard began in the 1740s. Enslaved laborers from plantations in the vicinity were sent to work on the dockyard. By 1745 a line of wooden storehouses on the site of the present Copper & Lumber Store Hotel had been built and the reclamation of land to provide adequate wharves had been started. Building continued in the Dockyard between 1755 and 1765, when quarters were built for the Commander-in-Chief on the site of the Officers’ Quarters. Additional storerooms, a kitchen and a shelter for the Commander’s “chaise” were also erected. The first part of the present Saw Pit Shed was constructed, the reclamation of the wharves and their facing with wooden piles was continued, and a stone wall was built to enclose the Dockyard. Between 1773 and 1778 additional construction was undertaken. The boundary walls were extended to their present position; the Guard House, the Porter’s Lodge, the two Mast Houses, the Capstan House, and the first bay of the Canvas, Cordage, and Clothing Store were built; and the first Naval Hospital was built outside the Dockyard. Many of the buildings in the Dockyard today were constructed during a building program undertaken between 1785 and 1794. The Engineer’s Offices and Pitch and Tar Store were built in 1788 and the Dockyard wall was extended to enclose the new building. The wharves were improved and the northern side of the Saw Pit Shed was built in the same year. In 1789 the Copper and Lumber Store was completed and by 1792 the west side of the Canvas, Cordage, and Clothing Store had been completed. The Blacksmith’s Shop also dates from this period. This building program overlaps with Nelson’s tenure in the Dockyard from 1784 to 1787. The Sail Loft was built in 1797 adjacent to the Engineer’s Offices and Tar and Pitch Store. Around 1806 the Pay Master’s Office was built and in 1821 the Officers’ Quarters building was constructed to accommodate the growing numbers of officers who accompanied their ships to the yard. The Naval Officer’s and Clerk’s House was built in 1855 and is now home to the Dockyard Museum.

Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

After England acquired colonial British Antigua and Barbuda in 1632, the English Harbour became a focal point for the establishment of a naval base. Its position on the south side of Antigua island facilitated the monitoring of the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe. Additionally, the harbour is naturally well-suited to protect ships and cargo from hurricanes. In 1671 the first recorded ship to enter English Harbour was a yacht, the Dover Castle. It was chartered to the King by a Colonel Stroude for the use of the Governor of the Leeward Islands when he visited the islands under his jurisdiction and "chased ye pirates".
The first reference to the defence of English Harbour occurs in 1704 when Fort Berkeley was listed as one of the twenty forts established around the coast of Antigua. By 1707 naval ships used English Harbour as a station, but no facilities had yet been built for ship maintenance or repair. By 1723 English Harbour was in regular use by British naval ships and in September of that year the harbour gained a reputation as a safe natural harbour when a hurricane swept ashore 35 ships lying in other ports in Antigua, while HMS Hector and HMS Winchelsea, both moored in English Harbour, suffered no damage.
It is part of Nelson's Dockyard National Park, which also contains Clarence House and Shirley Heights, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It is named after Admiral Horatio Nelson, who lived in the Royal Navy Dockyard from 1784 through 1787.
Nelson's Dockyard is also home to some of Antigua's sailing and yachting events such as Antigua Sailing Week and the Antigua Charter Yacht Meeting, as well as the 2015 and 2016 International Optimist North American Championships.

Domingue (modern-day Haiti) following his promotion to lieutenant colonel in the Régiment d’Agenois in August 1777, his service in America during the latter years of the American Revolution, and his return home and retirement from the French army in 1784. Dupleix de Cadignan’s unique experiences combine accounts of naval warfare and siege warfare through the eyes of a single observer, and expand the geographic boundaries of the American Revolution by serving as a vivid reminder of the crucial role played by the French forces. Historian Robert A. Selig, Ph.D., discusses Dupleix de Cadignan’s illustrious military career while analyzing the causes and consequences of France’s military activities in the decades before the French Revolution.
About the Speaker:
Robert A. Selig is a historical consultant who holds a Ph.D. in history from the Universität Würzburg in Germany, whose research focuses on the role of French forces under the comte de Rochambeau during the American Revolution. Dr. Selig is the author of several books, including Hussars in Lebanon!: A Connecticut Town and Lauzun’s Legion during the American Revolution, 1780-1781 (Lebanon, 2004) and “En Avant” With Our French Allies: Sites, Markers, and Monuments in Connecticut Commemorating the Contributions of French Troops under the comte de Rochambeau to the Achievement of American Independence, 1780 to 1782 (Hartford, 2004), and was responsible for the introduction and annotation of A Treatise on Partisan Warfare by Johann von Ewald (Westport, 1991). Dr. Selig has published more than one hundred articles for publications that include the William and Mary Quarterly, Eighteenth-Century Studies, Yearbook of the Society for German-American Studies, Journal of Caribbean History, American Heritage, Naval History, Military History Quarterly, Colonial Williamsburg, German Life and the Journal of the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association. He currently serves as project historian to the National Park Service for the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail Project, which traces the land and water routes taken by the American and French forces from Newport, R.I., to Yorktown, Va., in 1781, and has also served as project historian for several surveys funded by the American Battlefield Protection Program related to the battles of Princeton, Green Spring and Spencer’s Ordinary, the Clouds, Red Bank, Bennington, Hubbardton, Paoli, the Hook, Stone Arabia and Klocks Field, and three phases of the Battle of Brandywine. He is the recipient of numerous awards, his most recent and prestigious having been made a chevalier de l’Ordre national du Merite by French president Emmanuel Macron in 2022, for his role as one of the foremost American historians on the contributions of France in the American Revolution. Recently, Dr. Selig was awarded a fellowship by the Society of the Cincinnati to conduct research on the journal of Lt. Col. Jean-Baptiste de Dupleix de Cadignan.
