Who we are

The world is suffering from many problems: poverty, war, ecological disasters, racism, and so on. But if enough people join forces to build another world, together we will succeed.

We are a group of people engaged in the struggle for a better world. Together, we are building an organization dedicated to global revolution, called the International Organization for a Participatory Society (IOPS). For more about us, watch our introductory video, scroll through our slideshow and read more here: About IOPS.

Mission

We seek to win a new participatory society based on solidarity, equity/justice, diversity, self-management, and ecological stewardship, through:

  • flexibly exploring and advocating long-term vision
  • planting the seeds of the future in the present
  • empowering the lives of our members
  • organizing in an internally classless and self-managing way
  • winning changes in society that improve the lives of people in the present

Read our mission statement.

Vision

IOPS flexibly explores and organizes around a long-term vision of the broad features of a participatory society that centrally addresses:

  • Economics
  • Politics
  • Culture/Race
  • Kinship/Gender
  • Ecology
  • International Relations

Read our vision statement.

Structure

To give every member a proportional say in decisions affecting them (self-management), we are organizing in a bottom-up structure, aiming to become a federation of local, regional and national branches.

Local chapters are self-managing and have proportional say in regional, national and international issues.

Read our structure and program statement.

Membership

Currently, we are in a building-up stage. In due time we will take
decisions to determine further organizational details.

IOPS is open to anyone wishing to join who shares the commitments in the organizational description and wants to actively participate in the life of the organization. If you have any questions before joining, please see:

If we decide to continue with IOPS, we'll have to make some choices about what we focus on, at least at the international level. Roughly speaking, there are two directions we may go. Either one is only possible if enough members cooperate actively. Everything here depends on the volunteer activities of the members, and we do not have the means to do everything we might want to do.

In the first one, the focus will be on empowering the members in their daily activism. The website already offers blogs for telling other members about your experiences, successes and frustrations, forums for discussing issues and problems encountered, and projects in which members can work closely together. There are various ways in which this can be strengthened.

In the second one, the focus is on outward-directed activity, such as by formulating and publishing opinion pieces and policy proposals.

6. Which direction for IOPS would you most likely be inclined to contribute to?

I'd be equally inclined to contribute to either one, whichever is eventually chosen. (59)
I'd be more inclined to contribute if the focus is on empowering the members. (34)
I'd be more inclined to contribute if the focus is on outward-directed activity. (55)
I'd probably not contribute in either case. (25)
Other. (10)

Total: 183

7. Which of the following best describe your expectations for the future of IOPS?

The IOPS project has failed. It has no future. (8)
Maybe IOPS can be saved in some form, but only with major changes in the concept. (42)
The idea of IOPS was great, but the execution was flawed. But with some improvements, we can have a new start. (98)
No changes to IOPS are needed. Members just should become more active. (19)
Other. (15)
