From the 2015 Velocity Conference in New York: The internet and the web are well on their way to becoming foundational and ubiquitous technologies throughout the world. People want to see these in the same category as other technologies that we take for granted and expect to “just work,” like electricity to our homes, clean, running water, or our cars. But it’s hard to say that the internet “just works” – for instance, unbiased third-party measures of real-user data show that even the highest-performing global content delivery networks (CDNs) and cloud-delivery services have at best ~99% availability rates for simple single-object downloads. That puts the internet’s reliability more on par with spaceflight than, for example, automobiles. We need to do better if we want to use the web to form basic building blocks of larger systems.
In this talk, we’ll look at internet reliability in terms of the failures that can occur across a wide range of timescales and impact levels – from the once-a-millisecond scale of the barely-noticed microfailures that happen when a packet is lost, to the once-a-year scale of the major outages of a cloud or infrastructure service provider, or internet backbone, that cause online panic and lead to trending topics. We’ll use examples to review and illustrate two general approaches to improving reliability:
Reducing failure rates across all time/impact scales, with very different techniques being appropriate at each scale
Reducing failure impact: de-escalating high-impact failures into lower-impact ones.
About Robert Peters (Verizon Digital Media Services): Rob Peters is CTO for Verizon Digital Media Services. He was one of the early members of the engineering team at VDMS (then EdgeCast), and spent many years working with the company’s core http cache/proxy engine and its surrounding infrastructure ecosystem of software and hardware. He enjoys deliberating about deployment methodologies, looking at graphs and grids full of colorful numbers, and finding analogies between biological systems and technology.
Rob completed a Ph.D. in Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology, and spent several years in post-doctoral work at the University of Southern California building biologically-inspired computer vision software. You can find Rob online at @rjpcal .

Robert Peters
Robert Louis Peters (October 20, 1924 – June 13, 2014) was an American poet, critic, scholar, playwright, editor, and actor born in an impoverished rural area of northern Wisconsin in 1924. He held a Ph.D in Victorian literature. His poetry career began in 1967 when his young son Richard died unexpectedly of spinal meningitis. The book commemorating this loss, Songs for a Son, was selected by poet Denise Levertov to be published by W. W. Norton in 1967, and it still remains in print. Songs for a Son began a flood of poetry.
Academic beginnings
After army service during World War II, he enrolled at University of Wisconsin, majoring in English. He received his B.A. in 1948, his M.A. in 1949 and his doctorate in 1952. His teaching career took him to Wayne State University, Boston University, Ohio Wesleyan, University of Idaho, University of California, Riverside, and then University of California, Irvine, where he first taught in 1967. His field of study was Victorian literature. In addition to publishing numerous articles and monographs, he edited, with Herbert Schueller, the letters of John Addington Symonds. Peters received a Fulbright Fellowship to Cambridge, England in the 1960s to work on Symonds' letters. In 1965, he published The Crowns of Apollo, a scholarly study on Algernon Charles Swinburne. After Peters' Songs for a Son was published, he devoted more time to writing and study of contemporary poetry. Fellow poets Charles Wright and James McMichael and novelist Oakley Hall taught poetry at UC Irvine during this time and shared directorship of the university's well-known Master of Fine Arts program.

From the 2015 Velocity Conference in New York: The internet and the web are well on their way to becoming foundational and ubiquitous technologies throughout the world. People want to see these in the same category as other technologies that we take for granted and expect to “just work,” like electricity to our homes, clean, running water, or our cars. But it’s hard to say that the internet “just works” – for instance, unbiased third-party measures of real-user data show that even the highest-performing global content delivery networks (CDNs) and cloud-delivery services have at best ~99% availability rates for simple single-object downloads. That puts the internet’s reliability more on par with spaceflight than, for example, automobiles. We need to do better if we want to use the web to form basic building blocks of larger systems.
In this talk, we’ll look at internet reliability in terms of the failures that can occur across a wide range of timescales and impact levels – from the once-a-millisecond scale of the barely-noticed microfailures that happen when a packet is lost, to the once-a-year scale of the major outages of a cloud or infrastructure service provider, or internet backbone, that cause online panic and lead to trending topics. We’ll use examples to review and illustrate two general approaches to improving reliability:
Reducing failure rates across all time/impact scales, with very different techniques being appropriate at each scale
Reducing failure impact: de-escalating high-impact failures into lower-impact ones.
About Robert Peters (Verizon Digital Media Services): Rob Peters is CTO for Verizon Digital Media Services. He was one of the early members of the engineering team at VDMS (then EdgeCast), and spent many years working with the company’s core http cache/proxy engine and its surrounding infrastructure ecosystem of software and hardware. He enjoys deliberating about deployment methodologies, looking at graphs and grids full of colorful numbers, and finding analogies between biological systems and technology.
Rob completed a Ph.D. in Computation and Neural Systems at the California Institute of Technology, and spent several years in post-doctoral work at the University of Southern California building biologically-inspired computer vision software. You can find Rob online at @rjpcal .

We’ll discuss how to design measurements up front to facilitate their evolution when they turn out to be useful, how to plan for the exposure to different audience groups that typically accompanies a measurement’s evolution to later stages, and how most measurements need not become “fully-evolved” in order to provide their optimum benefit.

We have observed that different measurement data streams often evolve through a common series of stages, which we will present here as a “Measurement Maturity Model”
