This is how I clean my dirty carboys after brewing a batch.
1. Rinse out the loose stuff.
2. Fill with hot water and oxyclean
3. Let sit 1 to 2 hours
4. dump out a llttle more than half the water.
5. Put in a stopper and shake the heck out of it.
6. Rinse and rinse again.
Done

You can make this from wood scraps that you may have laying around or you can buy the wood which will cost you about $1 each. To make this you will just need a circular saw, cordless drill, sheet of plywood or OSB, and 2 x 3 or 2 x 4 framing lumber.

In this video I finally figure out where the five gallon mark is on my 5 gallon carboy. I have had my carboy since the mid-nineties, and it's an older version made in Mexico. I have never checked it, so I decided it was about time to determine where that mark is.
I also want to determine how much extra head space, after five gallons, I have left in my carboy. Using some basic stuff like a bottling bucket of water, a flashlight, and marker I determine my level and learn that I can fit about five and a half gallons inside.

Carboy
A carboy or demijohn is a rigid container with a typical capacity of 20 to 60 L (5 to 15 gallons). Carboys are primarily used for transporting liquids, often water or chemicals.
They are also used for in-home fermentation of beverages, often beer or wine.
Brewing
In brewing, a carboy or demijohn is a glass or plastic vessel used in fermenting beverages such as wine, mead, cider, perry, and beer. Usually it is fitted with a rubber stopper and a fermentation lock to prevent bacteria and oxygen from entering during the fermentation process.
During the homebrewing process, a primary carboy is used for fermentation. Once primary fermentation is complete, the beer is either transferred to a secondary carboy for conditioning or it can be transferred directly to bottles for conditioning. (This process of transferring is usually called racking.)
Polypropylene carboys are also commonly used in laboratories to transfer purified water. They are typically filled at the top and have a spigot at the bottom for dispensing.

In this video I finally figure out where the five gallon mark is on my 5 gallon carboy. I have had my carboy since the mid-nineties, and it's an older version made in Mexico. I have never checked it, so I decided it was about time to determine where that mark is.
I also want to determine how much extra head space, after five gallons, I have left in my carboy. Using some basic stuff like a bottling bucket of water, a flashlight, and marker I determine my level and learn that I can fit about five and a half gallons inside.
