Learn the difference between the violin and fiddle in this video tutorial! This video will help any fiddler out in the making! The violin and fiddle are exactly the same instrument that only differ in the way that you play them. Many people ask the question what is the difference between the violin vs fiddle, and there are a few things different associated with the setup of each instrument. Normally a fiddle bridge is setup lower than a violin bridge being that fiddle music has a lot more chords associated with it that with a lower bridge makes it easier to hit 2 strings at once. You will often see a fiddler put a pickup on a fiddle where a standard violinist will never need a pickup on a violin.
There are many differences in styles regarding the violin vs fiddle. You will find slide techniques associated with the fiddle, and more vibrato associated with the violin. Also there is the technique of shifting associated with violin music that is not as much seen in fiddle music.

Here is Swallowtail Jig! This was one of the first tunes I ever learned, and it means a lot to me! I've tried to make this video three times now, and each time I didn't like how it turned out. I think this version worked out the best out of all of my attempts, so I hope you like it!
Whenever I end up at a new Celtic jam session, and people want me to start playing something, I usually pick this tune! It seems like it's one that everyone knows, at least around where I live!
I've been so rushed with work and everything has been so crazy this past week. I hope things settle down a bit so I can relax~!

Back in 1964, I went down to spend three weeks driving the backcountry around Madison County, North Carolina, in the center of Appalachia, with the 82 year old founder of the pioneer Asheville Mountain Music and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The resulting film, "Bluegrass Roots" lets you hear and experience the hard scrabbling, dirt road real people sounds that dominated the back country of the southern mountains 40 years ago. It presents a string of the most extraordinary singers, players and dancers the BlueGrass Mountains had to offer. Many later became famous. Some were never heard from again. Most of the songs are classics, including Lunsford's own tune, "Mountain Dew."
When this film aired on Public Television in 1965, TV Guide gave it a full-page positive review, because Americans had never seen a documentary on the roots of Bluegrass and Country music. The term fiddle may refer to any bowed string musical instrument, most often the violin. It is also a colloquial term for the instrument used by players in all genres, including classical music. Fiddle playing, or fiddling, refers to various styles of music.
Common distinctions between violins and fiddles reflect the differences in the instruments used to play classical and folk music. However, it is not uncommon for classically trained violinists to play folk music, and today many fiddle players have some classical training. A lot of traditional (folk) styles are aural traditions, so are taught 'by ear' rather than with written music.
The medieval fiddle emerged in 10th-century Europe, deriving from the Byzantine lira (Greek:λύρα, Latin:lira, English:lyre), a bowed string instrument of the Byzantine Empire and ancestor of most European bowed instruments. The first recorded reference to the bowed lira was in the 9th century by the Persian geographer Ibn Khurradadhbih (d. 911); in his lexicographical discussion of instruments he cited the lira (lūrā) as a typical instrument of the Byzantines and equivalent to the rabāb played in the Islamic Empires. Lira spread widely westward to Europe; in the 11th and 12th centuries European writers use the terms fiddle and lira interchangeably when referring to bowed instruments (Encyclopædia Britannica. 2009).

Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. (born October 20, 1971), better known by his stage name Snoop Dogg (formerly known as Snoop Doggy Dogg), is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Snoop is best known as a rapper in the West Coast hip hop scene, and for being one of Dr. Dre's most notable protégés. Snoop Dogg was a Crip gang member while in high school. Natalie MacMaster, CM (born June 13, 1972) is an award-winning fiddler from the rural community of Troy in Inverness County, Nova Scotia, Canada who plays Cape Breton fiddle music.
MacMaster has toured with the Chieftains, Faith Hill, Carlos Santana and Alison Krauss, and has recorded with Yo-Yo Ma. She has appeared at the Celtic Colours festival in Cape Breton, Celtic Connections in Scotland, and MerleFest in the United States.
MacMaster is the daughter of Alex and Minnie (Beaton) MacMaster, and the niece of Cape Breton fiddler Buddy MacMaster. She is the sister of Kevin and David MacMaster. She is the cousin of two other Cape Breton fiddlers, Ashley MacIsaac and Andrea Beaton. She was born on June 13, 1972. In 2002, she married fiddler Donnell Leahy of the Leahy family band, and moved to Lakefield, Ontario. In 2011 she moved to Douro, where she built a new house. In December 2005, she gave birth to a daughter, Mary Frances Rose. Her second child, a son, Michael Joseph Alexander, was born in June 2007. In 2007, MacMaster learned she was related to Jack White. Her third child, a daughter, Clare Marie, was born in February 2009. Her fourth child, another daughter, Julia Elizabeth, was born in January 2011.

Back in 1964, I went down to spend three weeks driving the backcountry around Madison County, North Carolina, in the center of Appalachia, with the 82 year old founder of the pioneer Asheville Mountain Music and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The resulting film, "Bluegrass Roots" lets you hear and experience the hard scrabbling, dirt road real people sounds that dominated the back country of the southern mountains 40 years ago. It presents a string of the most extraordinary singers, players and dancers the BlueGrass Mountains had to offer. Many later became famous. Some were never heard from again. Most of the songs are classics, including Lunsford's own tune, "Mountain Dew." When this film aired on Public Television in 1965, TV Guide gave it a full-page positive review, because Americans had never seen a documentary on the roots of Bluegrass and Country music. It not only chronicles the sometimes awkward exchanges between it's 19-year old subject (Ash Caton) and the people in his life, but also contains archived stand up sets dating back to 2008. The story is also told through interview based talking heads, and features original music by balam. As Ash's life brings him the cusp of all three of his ideal marks of success, the film observes the decisions he makes that gradually deny him of all three. A comedy-mockumentary that examines the ego of an artist, his relationships with those he loves and hates, as well as the relationship between his stage persona and his true self.

Learn the difference between the violin and fiddle in this video tutorial! This video will help any fiddler out in the making! The violin and fiddle are exactly the same instrument that only differ in the way that you play them. Many people ask the question what is the difference between the violin vs fiddle, and there are a few things different associated with the setup of each instrument. Normally a fiddle bridge is setup lower than a violin bridge being that fiddle music has a lot more chords associated with it that with a lower bridge makes it easier to hit 2 strings at once. You will often see a fiddler put a pickup on a fiddle where a standard violinist will never need a pickup on a violin.
There are many differences in styles regarding the violin vs fiddle. You will find slide techniques associated with the fiddle, and more vibrato associated with the violin. Also there is the technique of shifting associated with violin music that is not as much seen in fiddle music.

Back in 1964, I went down to spend three weeks driving the backcountry around Madison County, North Carolina, in the center of Appalachia, with the 82 year old founder of the pioneer Asheville Mountain Music and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. The resulting film, "Bluegrass Roots" lets you hear and experience the hard scrabbling, dirt road real people sounds that dominated the back country of the southern mountains 40 years ago. It presents a string of the most extraordinary singers, players and dancers the BlueGrass Mountains had to offer. Many later became famous. Some were never heard from again. Most of the songs are classics, including Lunsford's own tune, "Mountain Dew."

Simply put, a chord is two or more notes played together. Chords are most often used to to play back-up for another instrument. If you ever play with other people, you will be a more versatile musician and be able to add more to the group because you’ll be able to play the lead (the fiddle tune or main melody) as well as the back-up chords.
Another benefit of learning chords is that it will help you to hear music more deeply. You’ll better understand what the guitar or piano player is doing while you play the melody. And you’ll gain a greater appreciation and pleasure for music when you listen to it. In short, learning chords will EXPAND YOUR MIND!!!!
The chords we play on the fiddle are two-note chords, AKA double stops. Think of them as chord fragments. The chords we’ll learn can function as different chords (like synonyms). This may be a bit confusing at first. Just have patience and memorize the chords for now. Later, we’ll learn a little about the theory of why these chords are what they are and how they work.
We start with open string chords:
D major is D0A0
G major is G0D0
A major is A0E0
Then we’ll learn a simple chord progression:
G/D, which is G0D0-D0A0
D/A, which is D0A0-A0E0
Then we’ll learn how to play an inversion
An inverted A major chord is D1A0
An inverted D major chord is G1D0
An inverted E major chord is A1E0
And so now you can do a chord progression that sounds smoother:
D/A is D0A0-D1-A0
G/D is G0D0-G1D0
