New York Film Academy students gathered in the school’s own Los Angeles theater this week for a screening of the Academy Award Winner for Best Picture "Birdman" followed by a Q&A; with Douglas Crise, the Oscar nominated editor of the film. Crise received an Oscar nomination for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s "Babel" in 2007.

IT’S THE ‘TWO WAY STRETCH’… DOES PRISON WORK?
An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
Stephen Shaw’s innovative work, “Fifty Year Stretch”, began as a lecture at Salford University in 2008. The author has developed his prisons and imprisonment theme as one of the most important agenda items for the new coalition government’s Ministry of Justice starting with new policies in the summer of 2010.
Shaw’s lecture starts in 1980 which saw the growth of the prison population in England and Wales (and other jurisdictions) and runs through to the theoretical year 2030, plucked at random almost, on the basic presumption that problems (such as the 3 crises: riots, security and industrial relations) will stay much as they are during this next 20 year period. It is a brave call!
What we particularly liked about “Fifty Year Stretch” is its construction as a well-informed short history of prisons policy following the ‘prison works’ objective which may well be re-assessed in the coming years.
Of particular help to the applied criminologist is the realistic insight provided by ex Prisons DG, Martin Narey, in the Foreword. Narey’s preoccupation was ‘overcrowding’ which was to dominate his life and this 50 year history. He pay a high tribute to Douglas Hurd’s initiative whilst Home Secretary as ‘political courage’ although it is too early to see how Kenneth Clarke’s new approach will fare up to 2030. We think it probably will with the charismatic Ken.
The book has 8 chapters, a bibliography and an index for what we feel is a good introductory, thought-provoking read for practitioners, researchers and criminology students. Shaw recognises that there may be a change of policy from the approach he has seen as Prisons Ombudsman and from the Prison Reform Trust. Cynics should read this book, too, as the phrase ‘history repeats itself’ does go through one’s mind as one reads the 100 pages in one go.
Do finish reading with the concluding comments where Shaw gives a ‘Memo To Ken’ summing up the next 20 years saying that less tolerance of crime does not mean a return to the penal decrepitude and unpleasantness of 1980. He suggests that the future may consist of ‘broadly decent prisons’ with a public/private supply mix using new technology. He also envisages a focus on the effectiveness of regimes and interventions with more competition between jails.
Practical to the end, Shaw says that prisons ‘will probably be large’ and ‘prisoners’ lives more regulated both in custody and on release’ with an upward trend in the prison population. But he ends where we began when reading the book, by describing the inmates housed ‘as ever by the poor, the mentally ill, and the marginalized minorities’.
Of course it is a two-way stretch for the public and the incarcerated and the question which remains to be answered is does prison work? Stephen Shaw’s book certainly does!

Douglas Crise is an American film editor.
Biography
Douglas Crise was born May 1, 1961 to Glenn Crise, a retired mail carrier, and Catherine, a homemaker. The middle child of the family, Crise grew up in Smithton, Pennsylvania. In 1979, Crise graduated from Yough High School and soon began to work as a meat cutter at Shop 'n Save in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania. Crise graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in film studies and moved to Los Angeles to find work in the film industry, working for a little while as a movie lot truck driver. After a short stay in Los Angeles, Crise returned to Pittsburgh for a year before returning to California to work as a film editor. For months, Crise worked as an unpaid intern, apprentice, and assistant editor for very little money. Crise eventually worked his way up the film industry working as an assistant editor. In 1997, Crise worked as an assistant editor on the film Clockwatchers, with lead editor, Stephen Mirrione. This was the beginning of what would be a long-lasting collaboration between Crise and Mirrione. Eventually, Crise and Mirrione collaborated as co-editors on Alejandro González Iñárritu's 2006 film, Babel. For their work on the film, Crise and Mirrione received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Editing, the BAFTA Award for Best Editing, the Online Film Critics Society Award for Best Editing, and the Satellite Award for Best Editing. In addition to this, Crise and Mirrione won the 2007 ACE Eddie Award for Best Edited Feature Film - Dramatic tying with Thelma Schoonmaker for The Departed, making it only the second tie in ACE Eddie Award history.

Spring Breakers
Spring Breakers is a 2012 American drama crime film written and directed by Harmony Korine. It stars James Franco, Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine and follows four college-aged girls on their spring break in Florida where they meet an eccentric local drug dealer named Alien who helps them in a time of desperation, and their eventual descent into a world of drugs, crime, and violence.
Korine had devised the concept for Spring Breakers over several years prior to production, with fleeting ideas about the plot and what should transpire. His initial desire was to create a "sensory film" that was more about feeling than action and placed little importance on narrative or plot, the idea for which came later. Once Korine developed the backbone of the story, which takes place around the American spring break period, he travelled to Florida to write the screenplay. Production began in 2012, on an estimated budget of $5 million–a relatively small amount in today's film industry, albeit Korine's second most expensive film to date. The film is also one of Korine's first theatrical works to receive a wide release.

In the Cut
In the Cut is a 2003 Australian-American mystery and erotic thriller film written and directed by Jane Campion and starring Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Campion's screenplay is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Susanna Moore. The film focuses on a college English professor who becomes entangled with a detective investigating a series of gruesome murders in her Manhattan neighborhood.
The film received a limited release on 22 October 2003 in the United States, and was subsequently given a wide release on Halloween that year in the United States and United Kingdom. The film received negative to mixed reviews from critics.
Plot
High school teacher and writer Frannie Avery meets a student at a local bar, and when she heads to the bathroom sees a woman performing oral sex on a man. A few days later, Detective Giovanni Malloy questions her as he investigates the gruesome murder of a young woman, whose severed limb was found in her garden. They flirt despite the grisly nature of their introduction, and meet at the same bar later. Frannie is alternately thrilled and frightened by the detective's sexual aggressiveness, even as she grows more disillusioned with the attitudes and crude behavior of other men, including the detective's partner, Richard Rodriguez. Even as Malloy defends his partner, who can no longer carry a gun because he threatened his unfaithful wife, he promises he will do anything she wants except hit her. She leaves abruptly and is assaulted walking home, but calls Malloy and their affair begins that night.

Chamas que não se apagam, 1956 (Douglas Sirk) Sinopse Clifford Groves é um executivo bem-sucedido de uma grande fábrica de brinquedos. Apesar do sucesso profissional, Clifford sente-se deixado de lado pela esposa e pelos filhos. Certo dia, reencontra uma antiga paixão, que mexerá com seus sentimentos e o obrigará a escolher entre o amor e a família. Contextualização Clifford Groves acabou de chegar do trabalho com um par de convites para uma peça teatral. Sua intenção é sair de casa para retomar o prazer da vida, porém ele recebe a negativa de sua mulher e de seus filhos. Essa reiteração ajuda a criar o conceito da carência da assistência familiar, do cansaço que o personagem sente pela rotina e pelos dias repetitivos. Como ele diz: “Pareço um de meus brinquedos. Clifford Groves o robô que anda e fala. Dão corda de manhã e eu ando, falo e trabalho. Dão corda de novo e volto, janto e durmo! Dão corda no dia seguinte e trabalho para pagar as contas!” Na continuação dessa mesma cena, Groves recebe a visita de sua velha paixão, Norma Miller, e acaba indo à peça com ela. Ele gostaria que sua mulher fosse com ele, mas a mesma negou a companhia, alegando que precisava cuidar de sua filha que acabara de se machucar. Ele encontrou casualmente a Norma Miller. Os dois passam a noite dançando, Groves tinha a esperança que Norma o convidasse para tomar um drink, porém ela diz que está com sono. Num momento brilhante de uso da sombra projetada em seu rosto, cobrindo-o por inteiro. Essa sombra é provocada pela cortina do quarto sendo fechada por Norma. Essa escuridão em seu rosto, aumenta mais a sua crise de falta de companhia, reforçando o seu drama interior que carrega todo o filme. Além de estabelecer um conceito de pré-narração da história desse casal que não terminará juntos, “iluminados”, isso mostra a impossibilidade dessa relação seguir em frente. A janela que se fecha, projetando a sombra que acaba apagando o seu rosto. Uma metáfora da falta de luz nessa relação e da decisão que Norma tomará no futuro de não seguir com ele. A sombra apresentando o sentido de fechamento, de impossibilidade, antecipando a ideia que aparecerá no final do filme. Contextualização Vinnie decide ir com uns amigos ao Hotel que o seu pai está hospedado, logo que chega, na recepção, ele descobre que o Sr. Andrews, o empresário que o pai encontraria no local, não está hospedado. Além dessa descoberta, um funcionário do Hotel revela que o seu pai está com uma mulher, o que gera um desconfiança por parte dele. Vinnie decide ir atrás de seu pai, mas como a imagem mostra bem, ele não vê nada demais. Estudo de Luz 2 Clifford Groves convida Norma para um jantar com a sua família. Vinnie está enlouquecido com a suspeita de traição de seu pai, essa que nunca foi comprovada. No meio do jantar, Vinnie não suporta ver os dois sentados lado a lado, levanta-se, e sai. Sua mãe vai falar com ele. Nesse momento Vinnie entra nas trevas da cegueira. Uma sombra bestial consome todo o seu rosto, criando esse grande momento de crise do personagem que está entregue a uma suposição de infidelidade sem nenhum fundamento factual. Ele se encontra nesse poço de escuridão, expressado por uma sombra que come toda a sua cara, ressaltando a sua perturbação cega. Lembro que as sombras sempre existiram no Cinema, mas as sombras brutais não se usam em qualquer momento e que elas podem ganhar muita força nos momentos de grande crise dos personagens.

IT’S THE ‘TWO WAY STRETCH’… DOES PRISON WORK?
An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
Stephen Shaw’s innovative work, “Fifty Year Stretch”, began as a lecture at Salford University in 2008. The author has developed his prisons and imprisonment theme as one of the most important agenda items for the new coalition government’s Ministry of Justice starting with new policies in the summer of 2010.
Shaw’s lecture starts in 1980 which saw the growth of the prison population in England and Wales (and other jurisdictions) and runs through to the theoretical year 2030, plucked at random almost, on the basic presumption that problems (such as the 3 crises: riots, security and industrial relations) will stay much as they are during this next 20 year period. It is a brave call!
What we particularly liked about “Fifty Year Stretch” is its construction as a well-informed short history of prisons policy following the ‘prison works’ objective which may well be re-assessed in the coming years.
Of particular help to the applied criminologist is the realistic insight provided by ex Prisons DG, Martin Narey, in the Foreword. Narey’s preoccupation was ‘overcrowding’ which was to dominate his life and this 50 year history. He pay a high tribute to Douglas Hurd’s initiative whilst Home Secretary as ‘political courage’ although it is too early to see how Kenneth Clarke’s new approach will fare up to 2030. We think it probably will with the charismatic Ken.
The book has 8 chapters, a bibliography and an index for what we feel is a good introductory, thought-provoking read for practitioners, researchers and criminology students. Shaw recognises that there may be a change of policy from the approach he has seen as Prisons Ombudsman and from the Prison Reform Trust. Cynics should read this book, too, as the phrase ‘history repeats itself’ does go through one’s mind as one reads the 100 pages in one go.
Do finish reading with the concluding comments where Shaw gives a ‘Memo To Ken’ summing up the next 20 years saying that less tolerance of crime does not mean a return to the penal decrepitude and unpleasantness of 1980. He suggests that the future may consist of ‘broadly decent prisons’ with a public/private supply mix using new technology. He also envisages a focus on the effectiveness of regimes and interventions with more competition between jails.
Practical to the end, Shaw says that prisons ‘will probably be large’ and ‘prisoners’ lives more regulated both in custody and on release’ with an upward trend in the prison population. But he ends where we began when reading the book, by describing the inmates housed ‘as ever by the poor, the mentally ill, and the marginalized minorities’.
Of course it is a two-way stretch for the public and the incarcerated and the question which remains to be answered is does prison work? Stephen Shaw’s book certainly does!

Sinopse
Clifford Groves é um executivo bem-sucedido de uma grande fábrica de brinquedos. Apesar do sucesso profissional, Clifford sente-se deixado de lado pela esposa e pelos filhos. Certo dia, reencontra uma antiga paixão, que mexerá com seus sentimentos e o obrigará a escolher entre o amor e a família.
Contextualização
Clifford Groves acabou de chegar do trabalho com um par de convites para uma peça teatral. Sua intenção é sair de casa para retomar o prazer da vida, porém ele recebe a negativa de sua mulher e de seus filhos. Essa reiteração ajuda a criar o conceito da carência da assistência familiar, do cansaço que o personagem sente pela rotina e pelos dias repetitivos. Como ele diz: “Pareço um de meus brinquedos. Clifford Groves o robô que anda e fala. Dão corda de manhã e eu ando, falo e trabalho. Dão corda de novo e volto, janto e durmo! Dão corda no dia seguinte e trabalho para pagar as contas!” Na continuação dessa mesma cena, Groves recebe a visita de sua velha paixão, Norma Miller, e acaba indo à peça com ela.

Clifford Groves marcou uma reunião com um empresário nesse Hotel. Ele gostaria que sua mulher fosse com ele, mas a mesma negou a companhia, alegando que precisava cuidar de sua filha que acabara de se machucar. Ele encontrou casualmente a Norma Miller. Os dois passam a noite dançando, Groves tinha a esperança que Norma o convidasse para tomar um drink, porém ela diz que está com sono.
Num momento brilhante de uso da sombra projetada em seu rosto, cobrindo-o por inteiro. Essa sombra é provocada pela cortina do quarto sendo fechada por Norma. Essa escuridão em seu rosto, aumenta mais a sua crise de falta de companhia, reforçando o seu drama interior que carrega todo o filme. Além de estabelecer um conceito de pré-narração da história desse casal que não terminará juntos, “iluminados”, isso mostra a impossibilidade dessa relação seguir em frente. A janela que se fecha, projetando a sombra que acaba apagando o seu rosto. Uma metáfora da falta de luz nessa relação e da decisão que Norma tomará no futuro de não seguir com ele. A sombra apresentando o sentido de fechamento, de impossibilidade, antecipando a ideia que aparecerá no final do filme.
Contextualização
Vinnie decide ir com uns amigos ao Hotel que o seu pai está hospedado, logo que chega, na recepção, ele descobre que o Sr. Andrews, o empresário que o pai encontraria no local, não está hospedado. Além dessa descoberta, um funcionário do Hotel revela que o seu pai está com uma mulher, o que gera um desconfiança por parte dele.
Vinnie decide ir atrás de seu pai, mas como a imagem mostra bem, ele não vê nada demais.

Clifford Groves convida Norma para um jantar com a sua família. Vinnie está enlouquecido com a suspeita de traição de seu pai, essa que nunca foi comprovada. No meio do jantar, Vinnie não suporta ver os dois sentados lado a lado, levanta-se, e sai. Sua mãe vai falar com ele. Nesse momento Vinnie entra nas trevas da cegueira. Uma sombra bestial consome todo o seu rosto, criando esse grande momento de crise do personagem que está entregue a uma suposição de infidelidade sem nenhum fundamento factual. Ele se encontra nesse poço de escuridão, expressado por uma sombra que come toda a sua cara, ressaltando a sua perturbação cega. Lembro que as sombras sempre existiram no Cinema, mas as sombras brutais não se usam em qualquer momento e que elas podem ganhar muita força nos momentos de grande crise dos personagens.

IT’S THE ‘TWO WAY STRETCH’… DOES PRISON WORK?
An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers
Stephen Shaw’s innovative work, “Fifty Year Stretch”, began as a lecture at Salford University in 2008. The author has developed his prisons and imprisonment theme as one of the most important agenda items for the new coalition government’s Ministry of Justice starting with new policies in the summer of 2010.
Shaw’s lecture starts in 1980 which saw the growth of the prison population in England and Wales (and other jurisdictions) and runs through to the theoretical year 2030, plucked at random almost, on the basic presumption that problems (such as the 3 crises: riots, security and industrial relations) will stay much as they are during this next 20 year period. It is a brave call!
What we particularly liked about “Fifty Year Stretch” is its construction as a well-informed short history of prisons policy following the ‘prison works’ objective which may well be re-assessed in the coming years.
Of particular help to the applied criminologist is the realistic insight provided by ex Prisons DG, Martin Narey, in the Foreword. Narey’s preoccupation was ‘overcrowding’ which was to dominate his life and this 50 year history. He pay a high tribute to Douglas Hurd’s initiative whilst Home Secretary as ‘political courage’ although it is too early to see how Kenneth Clarke’s new approach will fare up to 2030. We think it probably will with the charismatic Ken.
The book has 8 chapters, a bibliography and an index for what we feel is a good introductory, thought-provoking read for practitioners, researchers and criminology students. Shaw recognises that there may be a change of policy from the approach he has seen as Prisons Ombudsman and from the Prison Reform Trust. Cynics should read this book, too, as the phrase ‘history repeats itself’ does go through one’s mind as one reads the 100 pages in one go.
Do finish reading with the concluding comments where Shaw gives a ‘Memo To Ken’ summing up the next 20 years saying that less tolerance of crime does not mean a return to the penal decrepitude and unpleasantness of 1980. He suggests that the future may consist of ‘broadly decent prisons’ with a public/private supply mix using new technology. He also envisages a focus on the effectiveness of regimes and interventions with more competition between jails.
Practical to the end, Shaw says that prisons ‘will probably be large’ and ‘prisoners’ lives more regulated both in custody and on release’ with an upward trend in the prison population. But he ends where we began when reading the book, by describing the inmates housed ‘as ever by the poor, the mentally ill, and the marginalized minorities’.
Of course it is a two-way stretch for the public and the incarcerated and the question which remains to be answered is does prison work? Stephen Shaw’s book certainly does!

Clifford Groves é um executivo bem-sucedido de uma grande fábrica de brinquedos. Apesar do sucesso profissional, Clifford sente-se deixado de lado pela esposa e pelos filhos. Certo dia, reencontra uma antiga paixão, que mexerá com seus sentimentos e o obrigará a escolher entre o amor e a família.
Contextualização
Clifford Groves acabou de chegar do trabalho com um par de convites para uma peça teatral. Sua intenção é sair de casa para retomar o prazer da vida, porém ele recebe a negativa de sua mulher e de seus filhos. Essa reiteração ajuda a criar o conceito da carência da assistência familiar, do cansaço que o personagem sente pela rotina e pelos dias repetitivos. Como ele diz: “Pareço um de meus brinquedos. Clifford Groves o robô que anda e fala. Dão corda de manhã e eu ando, falo e trabalho. Dão corda de novo e volto, janto e durmo! Dão corda no dia seguinte e trabalho para pagar as contas!” Na continuação dessa mesma cena, Groves recebe a visita de sua velha paixão, Norma Miller, e acaba indo à peça com ela.

Clifford Groves marcou uma reunião com um empresário nesse Hotel. Ele gostaria que sua mulher fosse com ele, mas a mesma negou a companhia, alegando que precisava cuidar de sua filha que acabara de se machucar. Ele encontrou casualmente a Norma Miller. Os dois passam a noite dançando, Groves tinha a esperança que Norma o convidasse para tomar um drink, porém ela diz que está com sono.
Num momento brilhante de uso da sombra projetada em seu rosto, cobrindo-o por inteiro. Essa sombra é provocada pela cortina do quarto sendo fechada por Norma. Essa escuridão em seu rosto, aumenta mais a sua crise de falta de companhia, reforçando o seu drama interior que carrega todo o filme. Além de estabelecer um conceito de pré-narração da história desse casal que não terminará juntos, “iluminados”, isso mostra a impossibilidade dessa relação seguir em frente. A janela que se fecha, projetando a sombra que acaba apagando o seu rosto. Uma metáfora da falta de luz nessa relação e da decisão que Norma tomará no futuro de não seguir com ele. A sombra apresentando o sentido de fechamento, de impossibilidade, antecipando a ideia que aparecerá no final do filme.
Contextualização
Vinnie decide ir com uns amigos ao Hotel que o seu pai está hospedado, logo que chega, na recepção, ele descobre que o Sr. Andrews, o empresário que o pai encontraria no local, não está hospedado. Além dessa descoberta, um funcionário do Hotel revela que o seu pai está com uma mulher, o que gera um desconfiança por parte dele.
Vinnie decide ir atrás de seu pai, mas como a imagem mostra bem, ele não vê nada demais.

Clifford Groves convida Norma para um jantar com a sua família. Vinnie está enlouquecido com a suspeita de traição de seu pai, essa que nunca foi comprovada. No meio do jantar, Vinnie não suporta ver os dois sentados lado a lado, levanta-se, e sai. Sua mãe vai falar com ele. Nesse momento Vinnie entra nas trevas da cegueira. Uma sombra bestial consome todo o seu rosto, criando esse grande momento de crise do personagem que está entregue a uma suposição de infidelidade sem nenhum fundamento factual. Ele se encontra nesse poço de escuridão, expressado por uma sombra que come toda a sua cara, ressaltando a sua perturbação cega. Lembro que as sombras sempre existiram no Cinema, mas as sombras brutais não se usam em qualquer momento e que elas podem ganhar muita força nos momentos de grande crise dos personagens.
