This is a bolo knife I picked up in the Philippines for $8.00!! This is the greatest knife, I have been using it since the mid 1980's for camping and chores around the house. It's made from a leaf spring off of a truck abandoned from WW2. They were making these in a small blacksmith style shop in a village.
This is an everyday carry tool for the locals when out in the jungle working. It's high carbon steel so will rust easily, so extra care must be made. Their hands are smaller so the handle is also, but it is still ok. If it had a lanyard hole I'd feel safer chopping with it so it does not fly out of my hand. I could put one in it but it would be where the heal of my hand sits.

The back side of the sheath has a removable and adjustable sling strap and 2 loops for multiple carry options.
For best performance from ferro rod be sure to scrape off the protective black coating before striking. In a survival situation, use the polished, reflective blade to signal for help.

Come take a journey with me as I restore a World War 1 US Army M1917 Bolo knife. These knives were issued to troops for clearing brush and field of fire. Way more M1917 Bolos were produced than were needed and the war ended in 1918, leaving thousands of these blades on the military surplus market well into the 1970s.

In Commemoration of the United States Marine Corps birthday, here's a little bit of USMC/Navy history & demo on this WW2 field knife.
This is a massive thick piece of steel used as an ax, machete in the field mostly for camp chores and possibly fighting. both the Navy Corpsmen and Marines used this during WW2, Korea and possibly Vietnam conflicts.

A bolo is a large cutting tool of Filipino origin similar to the machete, used particularly in the jungles of Indonesia, the Philippines, and in the sugar fields of Cuba. The primary use for the bolo is clearing vegetation, whether for agriculture or during trail blazing.
The bolo is called an iták or sundáng in Tagalog while in Hiligaynon, the blade is referred to as either a binangon or a talibong.
Bolos are also used as military weapons and as such they were a particular favorite of the Filipino resistance during the 1898 Philippine Revolution against Spain, the Philippine-American War, and the Commonwealth period. Since the bolo was first used as a farming implement, it was used in combat because during colonial times the ubiquitous bolo was readily available to the common person. For this reason the study of the bolo is common in Filipino martial arts, such as Balintawak Eskrima, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali and Modern Arnis.
The failed assassination attempt by Carlito Dimahilig on Imelda Marcos on December 7, 1972 was done with a bolo. She still bears the scars on her arms.

The kitchen knife is getting a makeover with a new design featuring a circular grip for improved ergonomics and versatility. Called Bolo, the designers tweaked the traditional knife design to change the movement of the blade and the way the user interacts with it. Bolo's creator, chef Randall Cornfield, says the angle of the blade and the grip on the handle in traditional knives put too much stress on the wrist and hand. With the Bolo, the user applies the force of their hand above the blade, this way avoiding unnatural movements with hand and wrist. This is a bolo knife I picked up in the Philippines for $8.00!! This is the greatest knife, I have been using it since the mid 1980's for camping and chores around the house. It's made from a leaf spring off of a truck abandoned from WW2. They were making these in a small blacksmith style shop in a village.
This is an everyday carry tool for the locals when out in the jungle working. It's high carbon steel so will rust easily, so extra care must be made. The kitchen knife is getting a makeover with a new design featuring a circular grip for improved ergonomics and versatility. Called Bolo, the designers tweaked the traditional knife design to change the movement of the blade and the way the user interacts with it.
Bolo's creator, chef Randall Cornfield, says the angle of the blade and the grip on the handle in traditional knives put too much stress on the wrist and hand. With the Bolo, the user applies the force of their hand above the blade, this way avoiding unnatural movements with hand and wrist. The placement of the grip around a circular blade is also claimed to enable more precise cutting.
The rolling knife can double as a chopper by holding its blade brake. It also includes an optional pastry blade to cut through dough more easily, and a tenderizer blade for meat. The Bolo knife is dishwasher safe, and the blade can be removed by opening the bolt for a thorough clean.
Bolo is currently fundraising on Kickstarter. The early bird funding options start at CAD 14 (about US$10) for a Bolo knife and a green handle that is available only during the campaign. Delivery is estimated for March 2016 if all goes to plan.
