The South China Sea is a marginal sea that is part of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing an area from the Singapore and Malacca Straits to the Strait of Taiwan of around 3,500,000 square kilometres (1,400,000 sq mi). The area's importance largely results from one-third of the world's shipping transiting through its waters, and that it is believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed.

The minute South China Sea Islands, collectively an archipelago, number in the hundreds. The sea and its mostly uninhabited islands are subject to competing claims of sovereignty by several countries. These claims are also reflected in the variety of names used for the islands and the sea.

South China Sea is the dominant term used in English for the sea, and the name in most European languages is equivalent, but it is sometimes called by different names in neighboring countries, often reflecting historical claims to hegemony over the sea.

The English name is a result of early European interest in the sea as a route from Europe and South Asia to the trading opportunities of China. In the sixteenth century Portuguese sailors called it the China Sea (Mar da China); later needs to differentiate it from nearby bodies of water led to calling it the South China Sea. The International Hydrographic Organization refers to the sea as "South China Sea (Nan Hai)".

At the junction of two muddy-grey waterways of the Brunei River is an historic location, Kampung Ayer, a water village. Each building and adjoining pathway is built on posts yet there is both an electricity and drinking water supply. Plants decorate the terraces, and TV aerials are everywhere and it has a population of around thirty thousand. Brunei is a land that has almost lost its history while moving into modern times. At the junction of two muddy-grey waterways of the Brunei River is an historic location, Kampung Ayer, a water village. Each building and adjoining pathway is built on posts yet there is both an electricity and drinking water supply. Plants decorate the terraces, and TV aerials are everywhere and it has a population of around thirty thousand. Brunei is a land that has almost lost its history while moving into modern times. In the middle of the north coast is Jeju-Si, the island’s capital city. The first thing that catches the eye is Yongduam Rock that is situated on the city’s western periphery. It is an unusual lava formation that resembles a dragon’s head. The National Museum features the island’s history and culture including the clothing of the first settlers and the boats that first brought them to the island. The nearby fishing village of Haenyed boasts a special attraction, the island’s famous female divers. For generations these courageous women have dived to a depth of twenty metres for shells and seaweed without breathing apparatus and go for two minutes without breathing. On the western heights of the south coast is the Songaksan Crater, an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with green vegetation. The steep coast and rocky bay indicate that powerful eruptions once took place there and perhaps the volcano’s benign appearance may only be a momentary lapse in the geological history of the island. Jeju Island is a remarkable place and well worth a visit!

In response to the unilateral initiation by the Philippines, China says the arbitration violates international law and it will not accept and participate in the case. At a seminar on the South China Sea issue held in Bangkok, Thailand, scholars defended Chinese stance. We have their words. Scholars from the Chinese National Institute for South China Sea Studies(NISCSS) are invited by Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs Foundation of Thailand to jointly hold a seminar on the South China Sea issue. Hong Nong, director of the Research Center for Oceans Law and Policy under the NISCSS, said the arbitration tribunal has no jurisdiction over the case and the issue can not be solved in this way. Hong said the Philippines's move is to call for decision over sovereignty and maritime delimitation, which is excluded from the tribunal's jurisdiction. The arbitration was initiated by the Philippines over maritime disputes under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2013. After ratified the UNCLOS in 1996, China has made exclusion declarations in 2006, which says China does not accept any of the compulsory dispute settlement procedures regarding sovereignty, maritime delimitation and so on. Hong added that China and the ASEAN have their own way of solving problems, either through negotiation or consultation. She urged relevant countries to "have a second thought" about what is the practical way to solve the disputes. Wu Shicun, president of NISCSS said the only way going forward is to joint development on natural resources in the disputed area. In his opinion, the South China Sea issue is complicated and sensitive, thus it is impossible to be solved in a single procedure. Wu also mentioned the "Double-track approach", which means disputes should be resolved peacefully through negotiation between parties directly concerned. He pointed out that the United States should not interfere in the South China Sea issue in the name of "freedom of navigation". Anyway, Wu emphasized no matter what the future situation is, China will work with the ASEAN to seek peace, stability and friendship.

It is small and museum-like, a fine example of colonial Portugal on the South China Sea. The Fortaleza Do Monte is a typical Portuguese fortified complex strategically located on a hill above the old cathedral in the heart of the city. Its many old canons and mighty fortress walls are reminders of those times when invasion was a constant threat. The old centre of the city is the triangular Largo Do Senado, Senate Square. Its wonderful colonial buildings with their light-colored facades were built at the end of the 19th century and completely renovated in the final decade of the 20th. Macau's largest Buddhist temple, Templo de Kun Iam Tong, dates back 400 years to the Ming Dynasty when its original foundations were built. Beyond its main gate, just off a busy street in the north of the city, is a peaceful oasis of silence and contemplation, a mystic place in which stone lions, golden Buddhas and all who visit are surrounded by serene, aromatic wisps of smoke. The beautiful Jardim de Lou Lim Ioc Park is situated in the northern less touristy business district of the city. It was designed in the 19th century by a wealthy Chinese trader, Lou Kau. This marvelous oasis is an idyllic setting with a lotus pond, rocks, grottos and waterfalls. Excursions are available on restored motorized junks that leave from the City's harbor several times a day. Taipa is the larger of the two islands that belong to Macau. The tangled and narrow alleys in the centre of Vila da Taipa abound with rural character and Portuguese street signs are painted on azulejos. The island's shops and light-colored houses would be equally at home in Portugal. Although the Macau of today has much contemporary flair, it continues to enjoy a rich colonial inheritance that is well worth seeing.

Situated on a hill is Fort Margarita that dates back to 1841. We visit a village of the Bidayum Tribe and to the border of the South Indonesian section of the island. The Bidayum live in traditional long houses and survive from agriculture and river fishing. The long houses measure up to a hundred and fifty metres in length and are inhabited by several families. Between Sarawak and Sabah is the tiny sultanate of Brunei Darussalm whose capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, looks like something from an exotic fantasy. In the north east of Sabah is the majestic Mount Kinabalu, at more than thirteen thousand feet above sea level the highest mountain between the Himalayas and New Guinea. Borneo is a country of natural wonder, full of adventure. A land of head hunters, mysterious cultures and exotic wildlife and an island far off the main tourist trail. A veritable hidden paradise set amid the South China Sea.

Plants decorate the terraces, and TV aerials are everywhere and it has a population of around thirty thousand. Brunei is a land that has almost lost its history while moving into modern times. It is a country that has grown amazingly wealthy since its gas has hissed and its oil has spluttered from deep below the ground. Liquid gold - Allah be praised!

Travel video about destination Jeju Island in South Korea. Around a hundred kilometres off South Korea’s southern coast and lapped by the waves of the East China Sea is Jeju Island, an extraordinary holiday paradise situated on a volcanic island with temples, waterfalls, tee plantations and several leisure facilities. In the middle of the north coast is Jeju-Si, the island’s capital city. The first thing that catches the eye is Yongduam Rock that is situated on the city’s western periphery. It is an unusual lava formation that resembles a dragon’s head. The National Museum features the island’s history and culture including the clothing of the first settlers and the boats that first brought them to the island. The nearby fishing village of Haenyed boasts a special attraction, the island’s famous female divers. For generations these courageous women have dived to a depth of twenty metres for shells and seaweed without breathing apparatus and go for two minutes without breathing. On the western heights of the south coast is the Songaksan Crater, an extinct volcano whose slopes are covered with green vegetation. The steep coast and rocky bay indicate that powerful eruptions once took place there and perhaps the volcano’s benign appearance may only be a momentary lapse in the geological history of the island. Jeju Island is a remarkable place and well worth a visit!

The South China Sea arbitration initiated by the Philippines is attracting much attention as the final ruling will be announced before the end of June. In response to the unilateral initiation by the Philippines, China says the arbitration violates international law and it will not accept and participate in the case. At a seminar on the South China Sea issue held in Bangkok, Thailand, scholars defended Chinese stance. We have their words. Scholars from the Chinese National Institute for South China Sea Studies(NISCSS) are invited by Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs Foundation of Thailand to jointly hold a seminar on the South China Sea issue. Hong Nong, director of the Research Center for Oceans Law and Policy under the NISCSS, said the arbitration tribunal has no jurisdiction over the case and the issue can not be solved in this way. Hong said the Philippines's move is to call for decision over sovereignty and maritime delimitation, which is excluded from the tribunal's jurisdiction. The arbitration was initiated by the Philippines over maritime disputes under United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 2013. After ratified the UNCLOS in 1996, China has made exclusion declarations in 2006, which says China does not accept any of the compulsory dispute settlement procedures regarding sovereignty, maritime delimitation and so on. Hong added that China and the ASEAN have their own way of solving problems, either through negotiation or consultation. She urged relevant countries to "have a second thought" about what is the practical way to solve the disputes. Wu Shicun, president of NISCSS said the only way going forward is to joint development on natural resources in the disputed area. In his opinion, the South China Sea issue is complicated and sensitive, thus it is impossible to be solved in a single procedure. Wu also mentioned the "Double-track approach", which means disputes should be resolved peacefully through negotiation between parties directly concerned. He pointed out that the United States should not interfere in the South China Sea issue in the name of "freedom of navigation". Anyway, Wu emphasized no matter what the future situation is, China will work with the ASEAN to seek peace, stability and friendship.
