John Glover (actor)

John Soursby Glover, Jr. (born August 7, 1944) is an American actor, known for a range of villainous roles in films and television, including Lionel Luthor on the Superman-inspired television series Smallville. In 1993 he co-starred in the dark comedy classic Ed and His Dead Mother with Steve Buscemi and Ned Beatty.

Personal life

Glover was born in Salisbury, Maryland, the son of Cade (née Mullins) and John Soursby Glover, Sr., a television salesman. Glover attended Wicomico High School and acted at Towson University. Glover began his career at the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia and later studied acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse under Milton Katselas. Aside from his theatrical endeavours, Glover is also actively involved with the Alzheimer's Association. His inspiration for joining this cause was his own father's experience with Alzheimer's disease. He is openly gay and has been in a relationship with sculptor Adam Kurtzman since 1993.

Career

Mr. Glover began his career in television, playing a mentally disturbed kidnapper who kidnapped Joanne, the heroine on Search for Tomorrow. One of his early film performances was a small but pivotal role as a U.S. diplomat in White Nights. Other notable roles include Alan Raimy in 52 Pick-Up, Bryce Cummings in Scrooged, Daniel Clamp in Gremlins 2: The New Batch, a mobster in Payback, an advertising spokesman in RoboCop 2, Derek Mills in Night of the Running Man, the Riddler in Batman: The Animated Series, Doctor Jason Woodrue in Batman & Robin, Verad in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Invasive Procedures", the Devil in the series Brimstone, and a recurring role in The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd as Cousin Jerry, from Bal'mer, a relative whom no one actually seemed to know.

John Andrew Glover (born 10 October 1992) is an English cricketer. Glover is a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm medium-fast. He was born at Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex, and was educated at Hove Park School and Brighton Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College.

Having played for Sussex at various age-group levels, Glover made a single first-class appearance for Sussex against Oxford MCCU at the University Parks in 2011. In a match which ended as a draw, he wasn't required to bat in either of Sussex's innings, but did take a single wicket with the, that of Richard Coughtrie in Oxford MCCU's first-innings to finish with figures of 1/52 from fourteen overs. He had been a member of Sussex's cricket academy since 2010, the year in which he was the academy's player of the season.

John Glover (18 February 1767 – 9 December 1849) was an English-born Australian artist during the early colonial period of Australian art. In Australia he has been dubbed "the father of Australian landscape painting".

Life in Britain

Glover was born at Houghton-on-Hill in Leicestershire, England. His parents were farmer William Glover and Ann (née Bright). He showed a talent for drawing at an early age, and in 1794 was practicing as an artist and drawing-master at Lichfield. The Countess of Harrington helped establish his practice as an art instructor, and may have taken lessons from him herself. Removed to London in 1805, became a member of the Old Water Colour Society, and was elected its president in 1807. In the ensuing years he exhibited a large number of pictures at the exhibitions of this society, and also at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Artists. He had one-man shows in London in 1823 and 1824. He was a very successful artist and, although never elected a member of the Academy, his reputation stood very high with the public.
