Today I’m going to do a review of the Utomic
Edge. Some of you may recognize these as Bumpies but they’ve been upgraded. This is your extreme minimalist drop-protection accessory so its going to be great for people who don’t want a case but need a bit of protection for their device. This is a product worth checking out if really care about the naked shape of the iPhone, hate cases, hate skins and need a bit of drop protection.
Now if you’ve been with the channel long enough, you’ll know that I reviewed the bumpies almost 1.5 years ago and it didn’t quite work out as well as I thought it would. I’d suggest you check out that video before watching the re-review to see the progress Bumpies has made.
As much as I rag on companies, I do believe in giving them second chances, especially if they’ve claimed to have made improvements to their products. Utomic has been sending products pretty steadily over the last 6 months and their latest iteration is a noticeable improvement.
So lets gets started…again, if you haven’t seen the original review, check that out because its worth having a baseline for this video. If you’re wondering what other different iPhone accessories that
I’ve reviewed, check out my post on my website for useful, 1-handed smartphone accessories. If you found this review useful, consider getting it through my website to show your support for what I do!
At
Mobile Reviews Eh, I base all my reviews on actual usage so when Utomic says to use a hammer to test the healing ability of the new Bumpies/Edge, well, we’ll grab
Monica and go to town on these tiny little nubs. I’ve had my Edge on my iPhone 6s
Plus for several weeks now and have accidentally dropped them twice on tile from 3 ft, dropped it on hardwood at the end of this review and I’ve still got an iPhone 6s Plus.
Through out this review, I’m going to be referring to the product by its old name, Bumpies as well as its new name, the Edge. Not because I’m trying to confuse you guys but because I’m apparently not that smart.
In terms of design, the Edge looks simple. They are basically formed pieces of resin with an adhesive.
Installation of the product is simple and excellent as Bumpies makes great use of the packaging. They have a much smaller footprint than a similar product called the Ecke.
For the build quality, the older Bumpies usually showed a bit of wear and tear after a drop or two
. As you can see, the grey Bumpies are basically useless after a couple of drops and going to town on the nubs with Monica resulted in a bit of nubby pancaking.
None of the grey bumpies are usable after a date with Monica. The old Bumpies all split along the edges which is a bad thing.
Anybody else think they look like smushed up Smarties? Now taking Monica to the new resin Edge’s doesn’t do anything to them. No visible deformation, even with a subsequent, harder hits. How awesome is that?
The new self-healing Bumpies should revert to their original shape but I didn’t notice a change of shape. This is progress and definitely improves the longevity of the product.
As a side note, the last strike on the new Bumpie resulted in the new one flying off into my living room. I have no idea where it is and I’ve been examining
Monty’s dookies to see if he decided to go for for a small resin snack.
In terms of protection, as I said earlier,
I am confident that Bumpies will protect your device from accidental drops from
3-4 ft. This puts on par for most cases but without the bulk.
The best part of the Bumpies is the ability to keep the naked shape of the iPhone, it lets you get your hate-on for cases and skins but really, it lets you use your iPhone like there was nothing there mostly because there is nothing there and as a result, just made whatever I just said useless. The corners of the iPhon
