Palmer Station, on Anvers Island, is the only United States research station in Antarctica located north of the Antarctic Circle. Initial construction of the station finished in 1968. The station, like the other U.S. Antarctic stations, is operated by the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). The base is only about as distant from the equator as Fairbanks, Alaska.
The station is named for Nathaniel B. Palmer, usually recognized as the first American to see Antarctica. The maximum population that Palmer Station can accommodate is 46 people. The normal austral summer contingent varies but is generally around 40 people. Palmer is staffed year-round; however, the population drops to 15-20 people for winter maintenance after the conclusion of the summer research season. There are science labs located in the Bio-Lab building (pictured), as well as a pier and a helicopter pad.
The facility is the second Palmer Station; "Old Palmer" was about a mile to the northwest adjacent to the site of the British Antarctic Survey "Base N", built in the mid-fifties. The site is on what is now known as Amsler Island. Old Palmer was built about 1965, and served as a base for those building "new" Palmer, which opened in 1968. Old Palmer was designated as an emergency refuge for the new station in case of disaster, though this perceived need disappeared over time. It was dismantled and removed from the Antarctic as part of the National Science Foundation's environmental cleanup efforts in the early 1990s.

We Got Attacked While Using the Trolley At Palmer Station Antarctica. The trolley was a “Bosun's Chair” set up to have quick access across Hero Inlet to Bonaparte Point. Basically it was a chair attached to some cables across the little bay. It traveled about 150 yards over the inlet. The trolley was about 50 feet above the water … and the water was a cool 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Everyone who was a passenger on the trolley became “Fair Game or targets” for anyone with good aim while throwing a snowball.

A recent Detroit Zoological Society expedition to Antarctica included many science and education objectives – especially as it relates to the Polk Penguin Conservation Center – and travelers were not exempt from the harsh conditions of the Antarctic. On this day, zodiacs pushed through heavy brash ice in order to reach the U.S. Palmer Station to retrieve our life sciences staff member who has spent the last three months doing research there, and to deliver world renowned polar ecologist and penguin expert Dr. Bill Fraser, head of the Polar Oceans Research Group.
Sledding on the Glacier in Antarctica at Palmer Station. Even though the climate is cold and windy it doesn't mean there is nothing to do in Antarctica. We always found plenty of ways to have fun and get a great laugh. And sometimes our fun was a little dangerous ... like coming close to sledding off the edge of the glacier cliffs.

As the fifth largest continent in the world, Antartica is also the most Southern, overlying the "South Pole". Scarcely touched by humans, the frozen land boasts breathtaking scenery, broken by only a handful of scientific bases and a "permanent" population of scientists numbering only a few thousand. Visitors to Antarctica generally must brave rough sea crossings aboard ice-strengthened vessels, but those who do are rewarded with amazing scenery and tremendous and unique wildlife. De...

Brown Station is an Argentine Antarctic base and scientific research station named after Admiral William Brown, the father of the Argentine Navy. It is located on Sanavirón Peninsula along Paradise Harbor, Danco Coast, in Graham Land, Antarctic Peninsula. As of 2014 Brown is one of 13 research bases in Antarctica operated by Argentina. From 1951 to 1984 it served as a permanent base; since then it is open during the summer season only. Brown Station dates to 6 April 1951, when Argentina established the Almirante Brown Naval Detachment at Paradise Harbor. In January 1956, the Argentine Navy inaugurated the Refugio Naval Conscripto Ortiz ("Conscripto Ortiz Naval Refuge"). The detachment worked as a meteorological observatory and as a base for Antarctic campaigns until it was temporarily clos...

This speakeasy took about 10 minutes to get in at 1AM. luckily it closes at 5AM. The place is hidden around the corner from Tank Stream Bar, which is less hidden thatn Palmer and Co but nethertheless not an easy find. The music and atmosphere does put you into the prohibition period. Staff are dressed as such with the tiles purposely tiled in a 2 colour fashion with squares. It reminds me of Museum and St James station. The place is underground with traditional lights. Cocktail that we ordered was $18. Some fruit thing. People were just doing a lot of chatting around. All seats were taken while bar staff are quite friendly. This is a great way to wind down the night if you want to keep on drinking up in northern half of the Sydney CBD.
