Enfield London Borough Council is the local authority for the London Borough of Enfield in Greater London, England. It is a London borough council, one of 32 in the United Kingdom capital of London. The next election to the authority will be in 2018.
It was envisaged through the London Government Act 1963 that Enfield as a London local authority would share power with the Greater London Council. The split of powers and functions meant that the Greater London Council was responsible for "wide area" services such as fire, ambulance, flood prevention, and refuse disposal; with the local authorities responsible for "personal" services such as social care, libraries, cemeteries and refuse collection. As an outer London borough council it has been an education authority since 1965. This arrangement lasted until 1986 when Enfield London Borough Council gained responsibility for some services that had been provided by the Greater London Council, such as waste disposal. Since 2000 the Greater London Authority has taken some responsibility for highways and planning control from the council, but within the English local government system the council remains a "most purpose" authority in terms of the available range of powers and functions.

A council is a group of people who come together to consult, deliberate, or make decisions. A council may function as a legislature, especially at a town, city or county level, but most legislative bodies at the state or national level are not considered councils. At such levels, there may be no separate executive branch, and the council may effectively represent the entire government. A board of directors might also be denoted as a council. A committee might also be denoted as a council, though a committee is generally a subordinate body composed of members of a larger body, while a council may not be. Because many schools have a student council, the council is the form of governance with which many people are likely to have their first experience as electors or participants.
A member of a council may be referred to as a councillor, or by the gender-specific titles of councilman and councilwoman.
Notable examples of types of councils encountered in politics include:
Port Adelaide is a suburb of Adelaide, the state capital of South Australia, approximately 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) northwest of the Adelaide CBD. It lies within the City of Port Adelaide Enfield and is the main port for the city of Adelaide. Port Adelaide played an important role in the formative decades of Adelaide and South Australia, with the port being early Adelaide's main supply and information link to the rest of the world.
Prior to European settlement Port Adelaide was covered with mangrove swamps and tidal mud flats, and lay next to a narrow creek. The entrance to this creek, the Port River, was first reported in 1831. It was explored by Europeans when Captain Henry Jones entered in 1834. The creek's main channel was then fed by numerous smaller creeks, and was 2–4 fathoms (4–7 m) deep. The navigable channel was narrow and the creek soon faded into swamps and sandhills. At low tide the channel was surrounded by mudbanks. Dry and solid land ended near present-day Alberton.
The City of Port Adelaide Enfield was established on 26 March 1996 by the amalgamation of the City of Port Adelaide and the City of Enfield, and is one of the larger metropolitan councils within South Australia.
Extending from the River Torrens to Outer Harbor, and covering an area of approximately 97 km², the City offers some of the South Australia's finest historical buildings and landmarks, together with a wealth of beautiful parks and excellent cultural and recreational facilities.
The current Mayor, elected in 2006, is Gary Johanson. There are 17 Ward Councillors who represent the residents and businesses of their wards at council meetings.
The Port Adelaide area is known as the History Precinct, as it is home to the Maritime Museum, the National Railway Museum and the Aviation Museum.

An industrial estate in Edmonton, London, is set to be transformed under major regeneration plans, making it into a modern and bustling business hub. The Montagu Industrial Estate, just north of the A406, currently has a number of structures of varying ages and quality. Now Enfield Council has drawn up a state-of-the-art plan to help breathe new life into the area. It aims to pave the way for a mixture of brand new fit-for-purpose industrial and commercial facilities. The Council will be setting up a partnership group to take forward the project. The proposals, which were agreed at Full Council on the 21 September, will see more jobs being created and an increase in business opportunities.
Labour Councillors travelled from the other side of Enfield, to vote to push through the controversial plan for Tower Blocks at the former Middlesex University site at Cat Hill against furious opposition a cross party campaign including MPs, AMs and Councillors from Barnet and Enfield. We wanted to record this important vote for all to see, but soon after we started filming we were instructed by an Officer of Enfield Council to stop as he claimed they had a 'no filming' policy at meetings. As is our editorial policy, we have obscured the faces of the public for whom we did not seek permission to film. We are here to film the meeting, not the audience (backs of some heads excluded through necessity) Papers for the meeting here: http://governance.enfield.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=1...
The Enfield haunting: The true story behind Britain's most infamous poltergeist. Of all the hauntings in the world, this has to be the most terrifying. 284 Green street was just a standard semi-detached council house in 70’s Britain. Situated on a standard suburban street on a council estate close to London, you could not imagine anything extraordinary happening here. But, in 1977 this seemingly ordinary family home made news headlines when it became apparent all was not well with the young family who lived there. What followed would take Britain and the world by storm and even today remains one of the most horrific hauntings ever recorded. We take a look at the true story behind Britain's most infamous poltergeist. For a written transcript check our blog: http://scaremesilly.com/20...
For more than 30 years Barry Charity has served the communities of Port Adelaide Enfield. Today if you are looking at street signs, welcome to Port Adelaide Enfield signs and other Council signage you can bet that Barry had a hand in making them at the Council's Kilburn signage depot. His work in Local Government began at the former Port Adelaide Council and continued after amalgamation. It even continued after he lost the lower half of his left leg due to osteomyelitis around 11 years ago. Incidentally Barry is a champion lawn bowler and was crowned Wheelchair Sports SA's Most Outstanding Athlete of the Year for 2012 -- he has also been selected by Wheelchair Sport Australia to compete in next year's Commonwealth Games.
