Romeo Must Die is a 2000 martial arts romantic drama film directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak. Starring Jet Li, Aaliyah, Anthony Anderson, Delroy Lindo, Isaiah Washington, Russell Wong, and features action and fight choreography by Corey Yuen. It is considered Jet Li's breakout role in the English-speaking American film industry.
The movie's setting was Oakland, California, but other than a few establishing shots, the film was entirely shot in Vancouver, British Columbia. This film was the debut of R&B singer Aaliyah as an actress.
Kung-fu action star Jet Li is an ex-cop investigating the murder of his brother, who had ties with the Chinese mafia in America. Aaliyah plays the daughter of the American mob boss.
According to the documentary The Slanted Screen, Han and Trish were supposed to have a kissing scene, which explains the title of Romeo, but this was met with derision from a pre-screening with an urban audience. Jet Li stated on his personal website that they had filmed both versions of the scene (with kiss and without), and decided to use the one without instead because it would be "somewhat strange and awkward" for Han to have witness his father's suicide and then to come out and kiss someone.
God damned me
God damned me to a life of negativity
Pathetic just how my enemies define me
Victim – of my own persuasion
Addict – to confrontation
How did it come to this?
Pinning for the fueds I miss
Defined by enemies
Rolled the dice one too many times
Never thought I would be the one to pay the price
No salvation to keep me sane
And nowhere left to shift the blame
Inherent hate I’ll wear forever
A deep resent that can’t be tamed
Lied, defied – no hope left for divinity
Lied, defied – my sins laid bare for none to see
God damned me
