Peter F. Flaherty
Peter Francis "Pete" Flaherty (June 25, 1924 – April 18, 2005) was an American politician from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He served as Assistant District Attorney of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania from 1957 to 1964; a City of Pittsburgh Councilman 1966 to 1970; Democratic mayor of Pittsburgh from 1970 to 1977; United States Deputy Attorney General during the Carter administration from 1977 to 1978, and County Commissioner of Allegheny County from 1984 to 1996.
Flaherty was born and raised on Pittsburgh's North Side. He served in the United States Air Force during World War II and used the G.I. Bill to become the first in his family to attend college. He graduated from Carlow University in three years, then graduated cum laude from Notre Dame Law School and became a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He developed his own legal practice which included the Pittsburgh Steelers among his clients.
Mayor of Pittsburgh
In 1965, Flaherty led the Democratic Party ticket when he was elected to City Council. Four years later in 1969 he easily won as "Nobody's Boy" against the Democratic Party machine candidate, Judge Harry A. Kramer, in the primary election. In the general election Flaherty beat the Republican, John K. Tabor. Four years later, in the 1973 election, Flaherty was re-elected by winning the Democratic primary and the Republican primary, the latter through write in votes. He was the only mayoral candidate to have achieved this feat in Pittsburgh's history; it would not be achieved again until by incumbent Mayor Luke Ravenstahl in 2009. He first campaigned for Mayor with the promise to return the Mayor's Office to the neighborhoods instead of the "special interests".

Ó Flaithbheartaigh
O'Flaherty (Middle Irish: Ó Flaithbheartaigh; Modern Irish: Ó Flaithearta), is an Irish Gaelic clan based most prominently in what is today County Galway. The clan name originated in the 10th century as a derivative of its founder Flaithbheartach mac Eimhin. They descend in the paternal line from the Connachta's Uí Briúin Seóla. They were originally kings of Maigh Seóla and Muintir Murchada and as members of the Uí Briúin were kinsmen of the Ó Conchubhair and Mac Diarmada amongst others. After their king Cathal mac Tigernán lost out to Áed in Gai Bernaig in the 11th century, the family were pushed further West to Iar Connacht, a territory associated with Connemara today. They continued to rule this land until the 16th century.

This Gaelic-Irish surname is written as "Ua Flaithbertach" (nominative) or "Ua Flaithbertaig" (genitive) in Old Irish and Middle Irish texts. In Modern Irish the surname is now generally spelt as Ó Flatharta.
The surname is commonly translated as "bright ruler" or more correctly "bright prince", flaith originally meaning prince in Irish. "O" or Ó comes from Ua, designating "grandson" or "descendant" of a (major) clan member. The prefix is often anglicised to O', using an apostrophe instead of the Irish síneadh fada: "'".

As a gatekeeper of the dominant urban genre STAR is one of the most credible voices and in 2011 he was inducted into News One's "Top 20 Best Black Radio Jockeys Of All Time." STAR made the national stage on MTV (1999) but it was his radio show (Star & Buc Wild) on New York's Hot 97 & Power 105 that secured his place in media history. Incomprendido por los comerciantes, poco apoyado por las instituciones oficiales, pero siempre dispuesto a continuar su trabajo, Robert J. Flaherty, director de Hombres de Arán, está considerado como uno de los grandes maestros del género documental. "Tiene una fe casi mística en la capacidad de la cámara", dijo de él John Grierson, otro grande del género, "con la cámara vé más allá de los ojos humanos, llega hasta las cualidades interiores del hombre".
Hombres de Arán data de 1933. Ya para entonces Flaherty había filmado algunas de sus películas clave y hoy piezas esenciales en la historia del cine (Nanuck, el esquimal; Moana; Tabú ... ) con un rigor extraordinario, poco corriente incluso en aquel escrupuloso tratamiento del género.
Para este filme, ("uno de los máximos documentales de la historia del cine", en opinión del historiador español Manuel Villegas) el director vivió durante más de un año en una de las islas del archipiélago de Arán, al oeste de Irlanda, observando la vida de sus habitantes mientras improvisaba los medios técnicos que le serían necesarios para la posterior filmación: "como no había luz eléctrica, Flaherty, su esposa y su hermano instalaron un laboratorio portátil y una pequeña sala de proyección, produciendo la corriente con un motor de gasolina. When Donnie Wang bought his 530-square-foot studio apartment in San Francisco’s Financial District, he was single. When his now wife, Nicole Chiu-Wang, moved in, he needed to stretch his bachelor pad to cover dinner parties, overnight guests, work from home (at times, for two) and his stylist wife’s large wardrobe.
He called on his friend, designer Peter Suen, who pulled in his friend, designer Charles Irby, who began to design a kind of lean-to for grownups for his living room. They prefabbed a morphing wood and cement cube in Irby’s Oakland design studio ICOSA (he CNC’ed the formwork) outfitted with a loft bed, murphy bed, standing desk, closets and lots and lots of storage.
The wood-and-cement loft now serves as the couple’s bedroom (the lofted bed), guest room (the murphy bed), dining room, office for Peter (with large whiteboard on underside of murphy bed) and multimedia room (the loft also serves as seating for their ceiling-mounted projector).
“San Francisco’s kind of a funny place,” explains Suen. “In the rest of the country they might be in their legitimate starter home, but in San Francisco you’ve just got to deal with just, you know, ‘San Francisco’. So they really maximized what you would think is a small place, but it’s really now super customized just for them.”

Peter Francisco isn't often mentioned in modern history textbooks, yet he stands among famous people of the Revolutionary War and is considered one of America's founding fathers. Few know of this Portuguese American's legendary prowess during the American Revolution, in which he served three tours of duty, fought in five major battles, and was wounded six times, twice escaping death. Five monuments stand up and down the East Coast honoring Peter Francisco, the Hercules of the Revolution. George Washington called Peter Francisco his "One-Man Army" and even had a six-foot broadsword fashioned just for Peter on account of his giant stature.
This documentary is hosted by 6th generation descendant and author, Travis Bowman. He takes you to some key historic sites from the Revolution and interviews historians, professors, and a Senator from VA to tell the story of Peter Francisco.
