Mayor Parker said, "It is personal, it's not academic, it is my life that is being discussed."
Today should have been the day for Houston City Council to vote on a broad non-discrimination ordinance (HERO: Houston Equal Rights Ordinance). Following testimony over the past several weeks, and amendments (pro- and against-) parts of the ordinance being offered, the Houston CC delayed a vote until May 28.
The request for a delay came from several CM's who are on record as being against the NDO and who believe that more community input is required. Trust me on this one, we have seen and heard a lot of testimony and community input. Just listening to the vile hate and lies has put many of us in tears, despite how strong and how often we have heard it in the past.

Houston Mayor Annise Parker's decision to issue subpoenas for sermons from the city's Christian pastors was for "much larger political and constitutional stakes" than just to coerce disclosure from the ministers, says Newt Gingrich in a post on his blog.
"The Mayor of Houston’s recent subpoena of sermons by Christian pastors in the country’s fourth largest city is a shocking violation of First Amendment rights to free speech and free exercise of religion," says Gingrich in a post co-written with Vince Haley. "There is no clearer violation of First Amendment freedoms than for government officials to attempt to censor religious speech."
Parker earlier this month had the city subpoena a group of pastors to demand sermonst they wrote about her that would cover the subjects of homosexuality, gender identity, or mention Parker herself, as the city's first openly lesbian mayor.

Annise Danette Parker (born May 17, 1956) is an American politician and the mayor of Houston since January 2, 2010. She served as an at-large member of the Houston City Council from 1998 to 2003 and city controller from 2004 to 2009.
Parker is Houston's second female mayor, and one of the first openly gay mayors of a major U.S. city.
Parker was born in Houston and raised in the community of Spring Branch, where she attended public schools. Her mother was a bookkeeper, and her father worked for the Red Cross. In 1971, when Parker was 15, her family moved to a U.S. Army base in Mannheim, Germany for two years. In Germany, she volunteered as a candy striper in the Red Cross youth service organization and worked at the base library.
Parker began attending Rice University on a National Merit scholarship in 1974, working several jobs to pay for her room and board. A member of Jones College, she graduated in 1978 with a bachelor's degree in anthropology, psychology and sociology.
Prior to serving as an elected official, Parker worked in the oil and gas industry as a software analyst for over 20 years, including 18 years at Mosbacher Energy. In addition, she co-owned Inklings Bookshop with business partner Pokey Anderson from the late 1980s until 1997 and served as president of the Neartown Civic Association from 1995 to 1997. In 1986, she was president of the Houston GLBT Political Caucus.

Texans weren't--they had already elected Parker to office six times. Today, she’s one of only three female mayors of a major U.S. city. Today should have been the day for Houston City Council to vote on a broad non-discrimination ordinance (HERO: Houston Equal Rights Ordinance). Following testimony over the past several weeks, and amendments (pro- and against-) parts of the ordinance being offered, the Houston CC delayed a vote until May 28.
The request for a delay came from several CM's who are on record as being against the NDO and who believe that more community input is required. Trust me on this one, we have seen and heard a lot of testimony and community input. Just listening to the vile hate and lies has put many of us in tears, despite how strong and how often we have heard it in the past.
